His success as a LOI manager is harder to quantify. He managed the two biggest spenders to multiple league titles but, again, his European record was shockingly bad most of the time, especially against Icelandic teams! His next appointment is crucial.

Seems MON is on course and Keane may very well be the assistant. Although i initially had some concerns i actually think it would be a good idea. Keane's aggression tempered with oversight from MONs man management abilities. Could be pretty exciting.
I also don't think Keane would have an issue giving out to MON if we start playing hoofball.

O Neill yes good appointment, but o Neill and Keane - wtf, that's a distraction. Why would O Neill need Keane anyway, can he not do it on his own, its only international football ffs. Would def not last

According to Pat Murphy (who knows O'Neill very well) on the bbc website O'Neill wanted to work with him, and it was O'Neill who approached Keane. If the FAI had foisted him upon O'Neill I would agree, but if O'Neill actually wants to work with him why not.

They have a fair bit in common. Both got their break under Brian Clough at forest. If it doesn't work out with us they can go back to Forest together and be treated like kings

Fascinating outcome. Who in the squad has experience of either? Stokes, Meyler...?

David Kelly had another dig at Robbie Keane this morning, something along the lines of "if he's as serios about the team as these two will be...". Kelly also refers to the mob for whom satisfaction is always beyond obtaining. I thought Kelly led this mob?

Both acid tongue and both quite sore.I can see it go swimmingly at first then stuff simmering both will be outspoken and both wont hold back.Keane will not forgive the likes of long and mccleans tweets and its not like club management you can't afford to isolate players.

I think they will get good results initially but it will go downhill

It's a fascinating development and should certainly capture the public imagination. Will be interesting to see how they work together and how the players respond.

I didn't stop following the team when he returned under Kerr and obviously won't be stopping if he's involved now but I've had concerns about O'Neill coming in without Robertson and this hasn't allayed them at all. The good cop is normally the number 2 so this would be a role reversal and they'd need a good coach beside them as neither are known for that aspect of the job. I'd have had an issue with him getting the managers job but that would be down to the fact that he's a terrible manager rather than anything else, if he can reign in his ego then maybe being a number 2 and learning from O'Neill might be good for him. Hope it works out obviously but it's a gamble if it happens, I think RK will find it difficult not being the main man.

Pat Murphy on BBC website seems to think Keane has learnt about dealing with players since his last two jobs. He says he has reassessed his methods. Anyway, O'Neill is in charge and his player management is his forte.

I'm actually really warming to the idea. I think with Keane involved we'll have someone who will look at the entire irish football structure. I also always wanted to see him succeed in management and this looks like a good forum for him to learn from an experienced manager.

I don't think it will answer all of Irish footballs problems with the senior squad, and we can expect more traditional football but at least with a modern edge to it.

Yeah, signing him in the Jan window pretty much kept Sunderland up in the first season after promotion.

This is going to end bad. I'm baffled. The only thing I can come up with is that O'Neill will have a clause in the contract allowing him to leave for a certain type of club, and having Roy as number 2 lessens the blow of O'Neill leaving, as there is already a manager ready to step up.

It'll be interesting to see who they get in as coach. Chris Hughton will be available soon.

Dan McDonnell was asked about the keane vs Fai vibes, and suggested that maybe the FAI decided to do what's right for Irish football. We can expect Kerr to receive a phonecall any day so.

Well the press conference should be better than traps for starters, that's one good point.

Will be interested to how long the partnership last if things start/continue going pear shaped.

Dunno if McClean is gonna be happy with the decision tho.

I'm happy with the news and the FAI know it's box office.

People turning their noses at O'Neill? He nearly got the England job a few years back, he had a bad experience at Sunderland but kept them up. Look how many managers have struggled with that club since the American owner took charge (Keane included).

Success at Villa, Leicester & Celtic so a no brainer. If he wants Keane as AM then that's who he wants. Might do Keane the world of good, he respects MON & I'm sure the two of em can get us to the 2016 finals in France.

Tony Leen in the Examiner is saying that O'Neill sees this as a long term project and that he believes he can be in the seat 10 years from now.

Doesnt he know the Irish media? :)

He also plans to try and bring the likes of Ryan McLoughlin into the fold.
