One thing I would say about Stan is what he did after the Cyprus match. He was cornered, the honeymoon was over and was staring down not just elimination after 3 matches but the sack as he went to face the Czechs.
He responded so well, he swallowed his pride and called up Carsley, he ignored that clown Robson and picked Paul McShane who he believed in. Those were two key decisions that I think most managers wouldn't have made and I think if it wasn't for those two decisions we'd have been eliminated after 3 games.
He had a lot of balls too. Taking Duff off when they were chasing Germany, not being intimidated by Liam Miller, playing Andy Reid in the centre, some nice ideas like the American trip for youngsters or the Portugal training facility. Bringing Terry Dixon into the spotlight so early. He was in many ways an exciting and ambitious manager.
The point is that he's got ability, he made far more mistakes than he did positive contributions that's for sure but isn't that what experience rectifies? He certainly could be a fantastic manager some day. :)
