na radio 1 go to highlights after 2, i think 2fm is on robojock and the tv is just plain $hit during the day so no hope at night.
Im off to bed then
yeah i'll sky+ peter sellers.
Stan's gone, by mutual consent, according to 1.30am sports bulletin on BBC 5 live sports news, bye Stan.
Who will the FAI pick as his successor?
Thanks Steve. You tried your best; it just wasn't good enough. Sorry it didn't work out.
A sad day for Cypriot football. ;)
Seriously I wish Stan all the best, he should not have been offered the job in the first place. It's no job for a managerial novice to take on.
The blame lies with the FAI.
So, did RTE broadcast the press conference live?
I dozed off somewhere around 1.30am!
good riddance to the worst Irish manager ever. Two years we will never get back. managing his country meant nothing to him as much as the money he was getting.
cant agree with that, stan was 100% committed , he was just useless.
I feel sorry for Stan in a way, what Stapleton said in prime time last night was bang on. When Bobby was sick they should have brought someone else in, he was promised an advisor not a dead man walking.
All the Best Stan
Worse than Don Givens?
What I don't understand is the decision to give Givens the job for the next match .. which if we don't win, could be disastrous in terms of seedings.
Surely, Bobby Robson could manage one game .. although would not want to see another Jock Stein event versus Wales.
FAI should appoint Giles, Dunphy and Brady for the Wales game .. just to see how they would fare managing the team! Although they would be unbearable if they led Ireland to victory. Joking of course.
Players are generally a greedy fickle bunch. They will all have forgotten about him long before Cardiff.
First act..get rid of him as captain...
Staunton's record:
Played 17, Won 6, Drew 6, Lost 5. Goals scored: 24. Conceded: 19.
Kerr's record after 17 games:
Played 17, Won 10, Drew 5, Lost 2. Goals scored: 19. Conceded: 10.
It just goes to show two things: how abysmal Staunton's reign was, even compared to Kerr, who has gone down in history as a failure at this level. And, the goals for and against, shows where Kerr's strengths and weaknesses lay.
The new manager needs to sort out the defence (as Kerr did with similar players to what we now have). The rest should then follow, as we have much better attacking players than we had in Kerr's reign (Doherty, Morrison, etc)
Interesting statistics there Supreme feet. Sky Sports News were showing the win percentages for Irish managers back to Jack, Kerr had the highest, in the mid 50s I think. Though he did love to win his friendlies, to the detriment of developing the squad.
Thank god that he is gone - WORST CAMPAIGN EVER
Kerr had the best record of the lot of em (read a similiar sort of thing with win % yesterday). Unfortunately our best results were friendlies :(
and the stats should be last seventeen games for Kerr, not first 17.
anyone remember Kerr's first game? Scotland friendly?
edit: another thing, what happened the all time results list on fai.ie. it's disappeared. anyone know where it went?
yeah 2-0 in hampden..morrison scored
Kerr competitive (after losing first two games in euro 04 qualifiers):
Played 16 Won 7 Drawn 7 Lost 2 For: 19 Against: 10
Pts/Games Ratio: 1.75 Goal Diff/Games Ratio: +0.56
Stan competitive:
Played 11 Won 4 Drawn 4 Lost 3 For: 15 Against: 12
Pts/Games Ratio: 1.45 Goal Diff/Games Ratio: +0.27
Mick McCarthy competitive (from wc98 qualifiers on):
Played 40 Won 19 Drawn 13 Lost 8 For: 73 Against: 33
Pts/Games Ratio: 1.75 Goal Diff/Games Ratio: +1
I think those figures are accurate but I did add them up in my head (the goals i mean. The results are fine).
So while Kerr was more defensive, his record (pts/games) was exactly the same as McCarthy's. Stan's is much, much worse.
4 wins for stan 2 against san marino, 1 against wales and 1 slovakia at home
worst irish manager of all time FACTTTTTTTTTT
Hardly surprising , given the degree of stupidity of his employers. It would be like giving a junior doctor a surgeons scalpel.
I was thinking of making a new thread, but this reminded me so i'll stick it here. I think the crap goalies we have now make our whole team worse. I got a chance to see the training session in Hampden and I recall Kiely making making outrageous saves. Having two or three good keepers like Given, Kiely and Kelly (debatable) a number of years back had to have made our attackers sharper. Scoring goals against muck like C. Doyle and Colgan in training couldn't do much for a striker before a game.
It's a fair point . On the other hand proponents of muscle memory say scoring goals in practice against anybody helps you to do it on the field. Though in the case of messrs. Keane and Doyle I'd have to say where the Irish team are concerned I would be more on your side of the fence on this point!
Can't say that its a fair point. It's quite alarming to think that any quality striker would worry about any keeper, let alone think about them in training. A quality striker will score goals against any keeper. A keeper is only as good as the 4 men directly in front of him. Might I suggest that Robbie Keane and Kevin Doyle be more worried about the class of centre-half that they're training against rather than the keepers?
Excellent point. Training sessions must have some odd formations with only three centre-backs in the squad. But my point about the goalkeepers still stands. How often do our strikers take a ball down well, and donate the shot to the opposing goalkeeper? Same with headers right into the keepers arms.

Too often you're dead on ;)

Staunton was struggling. As one player put it this week: "Stan just about carried it off in the dressing-room because of who he was, not what he said. But, just because you get 102 caps as a player, doesn't mean you understand what's needed to be an international manager."
