I don't think that Hunt is anywhere near good enough. Frankly barely good enough for Reading. If Convey hits his old form, Hunt will spend the whole year warming his arse on the bench.
Duff & McGeady our wide men, if fit and playing well.

I like Hunt and reckon he'll have another good season at Reading. With Duff out for months it's a toss up between McGeady and Hunt and I'd edge towards Hunt. His running, aggression and desire from the start would help.
Still reckon we could lose as many as four of the remaining five games and still believe that if we avoid that, much less qualify, it'll be despite Stan -not because of him.
Thats a load of crap in my opinion. Hunt was a class act last season and was very impressive in his two sub appearances against wales and slovakia. He's great energy, and is strong when he runs at people etc. If he lost his place at reading (which i think is very unlikely) there'd be several other prem clubs in for him, just as there was this summer
He's far more deserving of a game than mcgeady. that lad has massive talent on the ball, but his performances for ireland, and particularly in the slovakia game were fairly crap...characterised by the following: him fannying about on the ball, getting nowhere, then giving the ball away. I'm very dubious whether he can handle the physical stuff
Besides, Duff's injured for months, he wont be fit.
HUNTY'S THE MAN!!
Steven Reid for the right wing??
Hunt is a very difficult opponent to play against. He will be crucial in both Sept away games. We have 2 excellent forwards in Doyle and Keane. Stokes like Murphy can offer something different from the bench. Kilbane looks to be dropping down to the championship so he should be gone. McShane is in the premiership and alongside Dunne a solid partnership. We should be looking to win both our games against the Slovaks and the Czechs. It all depends on Stan. And referees are less inclined towards the home team than they used to be.
as it is stan the man who is manager..alan o brien now at hibs will start...he played when he wasn't getting a game anywhere..so now he will deffo start as he will be a world beater with games under his belt...Run Forest Run..Gump
We don't ahve the leadership to go away and win against those two teams.
I'd be very surprised if Hunt doesn't start, even allowing for it being Stan who decides.
Given, McShane, Dunne, Finnan (position?), Keane & Doyle are certain starters.
O'Shea, Carsley, Kilbane, Hunt & Ireland are very likely starters. McGeady, A. Reid, Carr & Potter all have a chance, maybe even Steven Reid if he starts the season well.
Lots of exciting but young & unproven options from the bench, including lots of attacking players like Keogh, Long, Stokes and Murphy. Stephen O'Halloran should be given at least half a game at left back in Denmark.
Alan O'Brien isn't the basket case many make him out to be. He's easily capable of drawing a foul in an advanced position, exactly the type of thing you need in a tight away game.
The following has a good look about it in my opinion, though it's a big ask of O'Halloran & Potter but both looked up to it in the admittedly undemanding games in June. There's no easy answer to left back and central midfield.
Given
Finnan Dunne McShane O'Halloran
A. Reid Carsley Potter (or Ireland) Hunt
Keane Doyle
Would like to see O'Halloran get a run in the Denmark game alongside the established back four to see how he copes. ie, Given, McShane, Dunne, Finnan and O'Halloran. Admittedly, it was an undemanding game in the summer but he is certainly worth another look given the alternatives. Hopefully breaks into Villa team as well.
Won't pick this team below as Kilbane and O'Shea will start. A case of "experienced but crap" over "inexperienced but good".
Given
Finnan Dunne McShane O'Halloran
A. Reid Carsley S. Reid Hunt
Keane Doyle
Carsley shades out Ireland as we'll need to keep possession at all costs.
I think we should consider that Leeds United plan, to get rid of some of our squad members.
I like the look of O'Halloran. Saw him play last week against Toronto and he looked good. Good distribution and has pace. I hope Carr is not playing. At least one major mistake every game now. Has no pace anymore and can't get up to head the ball. We might end up with some surprises in the team. Carsley and Kilbane have both been in the news recently via moves away from their clubs to championship clubs. Ireland might not get a look-in at City. Same for O'Shea and Carr at their clubs. Long should keep his place at Reading and in pre-season games has looked excellent. Andy Reid might end up back in the premiership through a transfer(just a hunch). Stuttgart's team might be the right one yet especailly if O'Halloran is playing regulary.
would love to see this team line out in slovakia/czech games:
given, finnan, mcshane, Dunne, O'halloran, mcgeady, S Reid, Carsley, hunt, Doyle, Keane.
It'd be a shame if Ireland gets overlooked by Sven. I was reading in today's UK Independent Sven's possible XI if all his signing targets come through. I've barely heard of any of them. Now maybe he knows what he's doing & has spent his time looking at players across Europe but it looks to me as if he's spending for the sake of spending, and he's not alone. It really does show how difficult the landscape is for young players to come through the ranks at Premiership clubs.
I suppose you could argue that it throws down a challenge to Ireland to make the place his own, but I'm not so sure.
We really need Ireland to be playing regularly and be match sharp for the upcoming games.
Watch Ireland carefully cause hes from Cobh, but honest to god, havent seen somebody with the vision and passing ability from Ireland in a long time. Class act when hes on his day and with a team that want to play football, Micah Richards said on Soccer A.M, hes the most skillful, which doesnt blend in with irelands(team) style of play admittedly but still not a bad quality to have.
As for O"Halloran, still early but hes flying. Working hard for everything, and is starting to get what he deserves, when Stephen Henderson Jnr, the U-19 keeper, was in Cobh last summer, he was tellin us that without doubt he was the fittest in Villas youths and reserves, and did alot after training aswell ,and really looked after him self off pitch, health wise. Twas great to hear.
I like that team but there's still a lack of creativity in the midfield...I think Ireland has (deservedly) played himself into the first XI so it would have to be either Hunt or McGeady to make way...Also think it'll be too early for Reid so you could expect Kilbane to be there instead of him (unfortunately!)...
I want this team to play..
.......................Given
Finnan.....McShane.....Dunne.....O'Shea
................S Reid........Ireland
McGeady............Keane.............Hunt
........................Doyle
This formation works for us..we should stick to it..
too lightweight in midfield citizen.
Joey O'Brien in the reckoning?
John O'Shea has to fit in somewhere. He had a good couple of games against Slovakia and Wales at full back so if he is kept there then I'm happy enough. Centre MF and I'd panic.
That's hilarious, you would have a player who has about 5 senior CLUB games under his belt, O'Halloran, to come in and play in two of the biggest games in Irish football's recent history, one of them being against one of the best sides in Europe over the last 5 years!
I'd be tempted to too. We are in desperate need of a natural left back. It'd be a bold move but if O'halloran plays well against Denmark and gets games for Villa I don't see why not. It's not as if the alternatives are that compelling.
i think its silly to be mentioning o halloran, what the hell ahs he done to warrant a starting place. too much of a big occasion for hi to start...
"too lightweight in midfield citizen."
I considered that, but reid is a tough tackler and has alot of presence on the ball, and doesnt give the ball away as often as carsley or kilbane, ireland also is a competent passer and rarely concedes possesion...we are going to have to keep the ball, we cannot let either the czechs or slovaks get us on the break as a result of an overhit ball by kilbane..We have to go aiming to win both these matches..
possibly agree about ireland, but if you leave him out and add carsley or kilbane, we will have no creative edge in midfield , which will be in two very tight away games..
