They lost 6-1 to............Slovakia last month, ffs.
seriously thats the way they are - its the mentality - they are brittle temprament (nearly lost it on several occassions tonight - in a game they were home and hosed in) - away they will get tanked - at home they've been steadily improving for years - and we in ireland knew EXACTLY what to expect - **** at the back - a threat goin forward - that the irish team looked shell shocked by this fact is frankly bizarre
in response to your scoreline point v slovakia
they just whacked wales 5-1 in cardiff
if we beat wales home or away - WE'LL BE DOIN WELL in my book!
My U-6 team has won 5 out of 5 so far this season including a 9-2 win this morning..
Beats a 5-2 defeat by a f*cking holiday resort i suppose
But based on that anyone who has ever played football manager has a good chance. I once won the european cup with Preston.
Probably the difference with Kerr is that we would be competitive against the best teams in the group & possibly too defensive to put away trhe poor teams away from home. On the otherhand Staunton is well just sh!te against all teams. I think we have no hope next wednesday & a win at home to San Marino by any score will be good now.
I think the players lost confidence in Keer but at he would prepare the team properly. Would be interesting to know what the players really think of Staunton.
Kerr was nowhere near perfect but I'm a great believer in if you're getting rid of a manger you replace him with someone better!!
Kerr was very harshly treated when you consider the standard of staunton!!
Staunton is useless and I hope he gets the bullet or walks asap before too much damage is done!!
This 4 year sh!te is a cop out - we'll be well down the rankings for the draw for the world cup and that'll be us fcuked for a long long time!
Staunton out!!
In fact he was a model of restrait.
The root cause of this is that the FAI chairman, John Delaney, and his cronies actually know nothing about football. The media (Eamon Dunphy in particular) can hang their heads in shame. Add the leprechaun factor (like you) and face it we are ****ed.
The man show is to blame for all this is John Delaney. He couldn't wait to get rid of Kerr and was all promises of a "world class" apointment. What did we get - the Walsall reserve coach. If anyone deserves to get stick on Wednesday night it is Delaney. The fact that he is in charge of the el now is a scary thought.
Kerr always put out an organised side and imo got as much as possible out of a very average bunchof players. The delusions of some of the bar stool oirish fans, that just because we have 10 premiership players in the starting line-up, we are a good team is laughable. Derry or Cork (who beat the cypriot champions in the CL) would have down a better job last nite.
If only he was still playing we wouldnt have conceded any goals
if only he was still manager as we got to 2 play offs in a transitional period and did very well at the world cup
I dont like this post genesis brave new world that Keane stood up for
This isn't the post-Genesis brave new world. Genesis was never implemented, it was put in a drawer and forgot about.
This isn't what Keane stood up for either. Mick Byrne is back, the scoops are back, the lack of ambition is back. Stan is like the Irish Bryan Robson.
Aldridge for Ireland
He was appointed manager of the Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon, but only lasted one season in the post. His most success as a manager has come in Spain, where he managed Real Madrid twice and Real Sociedad three times, and Deportivo La Coruna and Real Murcia once each. He has also managed the Turkish side Besiktas JK and French side AS Saint-Étienne. He was appointed manager of the Welsh national football team for the first time in 1994, but only spent 41 days in the post, resigning after a 3-1 defeat to Norway. Despite this, he was appointed to the post for a second time in November 2004.
He lost the most recent game at home to Slovakia 1-5!!
Sometimes experience counts for squat diddlie doo.
Graham Taylor - Back to basics. No more experimentation.
After watching the coverage on TV3 yesterday and seeing the reactions I reckon Aldo could be the ideal man for the job. He has the passion, he has been a manager before (although this is obviously not a prerequisite for taking over the Irish job anymore!) and has a decent record in cup competitions. When you think about it he has a very similar record to that of Lawrie Sanchez and look what he's doing with an arguably less talented squad up north...
I think as long as Delaney is there Aldridge won't be.
What's wrong with Israel and will they ever get the credit they deserve? They're a decent team.
I'm not going to type a post of why I liked Kerr but I will just say that the difference between us and the group winners (eventual WC finalists) was 1 Thierry Henry goal. He got very little luck. We deserved to beat Israel 5-0 at home and certainly showed passion in that game. We lost our captain and arguably most important player for the crucial game in Switzerland. We lost our striker for the big game against Russia. We lost our only real creative player when we needed him most in the home game against Switzerland. If he got the slightest bit of luck we'd have had at least a playoff place and I'd say we'd have done well at the WC considering we rarely lost under Kerr.
I'm not saying his time in charge was a success but I still rate him really highly as a manager and I think he'll prove himself across the water. I didn't really hear much of him commentating last night but I did hear him say that the team needed a holding midfielder last night. There's no way Kerr would have fielded that central midfield pairing.
hello .... niall quinn ;)
available, kinda ... more experience than stan
i'd consider pat fenlon too.
...also klinsmann is free and what with the germans in our group...........
Mick McCarthy.
I wasn't upset when Kerr went I felt that he might have been given another campaign (like McCarthy was) but there was a fundemental lack of ambition with Kerr's teams. We lacked a killer instinct against Israel home and away when we were clearly the better side and at home to Switzerland it was clear they would come for a 0-0 we never really went for it, we were as well to lose as draw that game with 30 minutes to go we should have had 3/4 up front but we never looked like winning it.
The other reason I wasn't upset when Kerr went was I really believed we would end up with a top line manager, the appointment of Dumb and Dumber left me in shock. I wanted to believe that they would progress us past the level we were at under Kerr but 4 defeats in 5 games including the humiliation at the weekend has realised my worst fears. I wanted Stan to get the full campaign but I was wrong, the damage has already been done and I think he needs to go and we need to appoint someone who will instill fear and respect into the players. Who that is at the moment I have no idea the names in the frame like Daglish, Aldridge, Souness, Curbishley none of them inspire confidence;
Daglish is the only one who has really done it at Club level but he's been out of the game for a long time,
Aldo has the passion and some experience but I think would be better as a No2
Curbishley doesn't inspire me, I reckon he would be another Kerr, well organised but probably lacking the killer edge
Souness wouldn't take any crap and would be his own man but I just don't rate him as a manager.
Any of them would be better than Stan though!
I'm going to do a Stan and remain stubborn. I was glad to see the back of Kerr, a man I like & admire to this day. I'd love to know the EXACT truth about his tenure though. What exactly was his realtionship with his players and why?If the simple answer is that they were lazy & spoilt then **** them.
Most of what eirebhoy says above is true. And one thing is very important that's maybe being selectively overlooked: the role of Chris Hughton. Surely he was at least a sounding board for tactics and substitutions etc? Or was Kerr simply too stubborn himself & authoritarian? Was he too out of his depth at this level?
Does any of us really know?
Scotland could easily have lost to France. It's not a science. Henry hit the inside of the post from 25 yards against them, he scored from 25 yards against us. They scored from a corner, we hit the post from a free kick. We might have got a draw, narrow win, they got a narrow win.
But: the way they set themselves up gave them every chance. The way we're setting ourselves up now gives us no chance. A winger and a midget (no fault attached to stephen Ireland for saturday) can not compete against ANYBODY at international level.
No top class manager would work for Delaney. Many would work for Kerr.
Would I prefer Kerr to Stan? Yes.
I'm going to get tendonitis my knee is jerking so much this morning!
Give the job to Ger Loughnane....He would get the players to work hard and with a bit of pride not like the ***** Staunton....No seriously tough, what is going to happen. This is no joke at the moment, and the thing is that Staunton has got the backing of Delaney and as long as he is there so will staunton...Hopfully after the Czech game there will be a desicion make on Stauntos future.
Kerr was very tactically aware and I think even the most anti Kerr people would say we would never concede 5 goals against a team like Cypurs. I think there are some people living in la la land who think we are world beaters and others who are doom and gloom merchants. I think the reality is in the middle. I have been saying for some time on this board that Scotland had decent players and with a decent manager they would get decent results. I think the same about ourselves. Walter Smith is a good manager who knows how to set up a team at this level. What needs to be done, how to motivate the players etc. They have Ally Mc Coist as their Cheerleader we went an appointed our cheerleader as manager. Staunton has less tactical awareness than Mc Coist does and Mc Coist is only there to gee the team up before games etc.
I think we have some very average players but what is worse is that we have some really good players who are not playing for us at the moment and have not done for a while. I am often amazed how quickly a good manager can get a team that appears to be going nowhere playing well. That is through decent work on the training pitch. It appears to me that no work was done on the training pitch last week that was any benefit to the team whatsover.
I'd prefer Kerr to Stan too, but I still wouldn't have Kerr back. Kerr is a better manager, that's been proven over the last 4 games, but his tenure was still a step back after McCarthy that's turned into a sharp drop in quality.
Big Sam - if we can't win fairly then at least he can throw a tenner to the ref at half time.
and big sam hasn't got a notion of leaving bolton for us

ENOUGH SAID...........................................
Lets put an end to all this pussyfooting around, Kerr didn't have the respect of the players and they were all taking the pi$$ in the end, but hey we done well in the friendies , great stuff, well done lads !!!
Mick would put the fear of God into the squad they wouldn't know what hit them if they performed like they did on Saturday for him.
As for all the slagging JD is getting, at the moment I disagree. Maybe some fans don't appreciate the work he is putting in to raising the profile of all levels of football in Ireland , when he came over to the London RISSC he was very honest and open in discussions about Irish football....talking about the domestic and International scene..............
Ps : - Stan if you reading this, have a couple of decent central defenders, central midfielders and an out and out goalscorer available for Weds from the LONDON RISSC TEAM !!!
According to some reports in the papers this morning, it says that the FAI are going to appoint Kenny Dalglish to Bobby Robson's job. Why don't they just sack Staunton, give Dalglish the Manager's job and f**k off with this International Consultations Role (or whatever it's called). Let Dalglish bring in someone like John Aldridge as his Assistant then. Dalglish and Aldridge would be a far better management team than that of Staunton/McDonald.
For me, Staunton has to go regardless of what happens on Wednesday night. I don't subscribe to this idea that Delaney must go as well as I do believe he is doing a good enough job. Remember, the FAI is not just about who is managing the Senior International Team.
Finally, I'd get rid of that Muppet Mick Byrne as well.:)
Kenny Dalglish? Why don't we get John Barnes in as well while we're at it.
why is delaney doing a good job?
what good has he done?
just by the look of delaney throws me off as him being good at anything....complete pigeon!
