Well to be fair to jockser I think he was making the point that some people put public speaking as one of the main credentials you need to be a top class manager. There is no doubt that Bobby Robson was fare more comfortable infront of the media than Stan was. But by all accounts from the journalists on the Hub last night, the minute he did one on one interviews Staunton was very talkative and informative. The players certainly responded to him in 2002 as that team was pretty average without keane but Staunton showed leadership skills after the debacle of Saipan. I think that is more important than whether he can crack a few joke or give great press conferences. Brian Kerr gave a great 1st press conference

I agree that there is indeed more to a manager than having played a lot of games. However, I do not put his public speaking performance top or any where near top of that list. Did you ever hear Bob Paisley, Kenny Dalglish even Fergie in his early years.
The appointment of Stan clearly had nothing to do with insight into football. You're on the side of John Delaney and therefore against the majority of people on here, "lad"!Quote:

No but silly remarks on boring conferences are just that....sillyQuote:

LOL thats just and ignoratant statement. You have no idea what Stan knows or doesnt know about coaching..... we will all just have to wait and see wont we. Your comment on him speaking at 1 word per minute is just silly again :DQuote:

Peader, you know well there is a major difference between speaking at a press conference and speaking to your "peers" as our new boss will be doing most of the time. I still do not agree that public speaking and being a top class manager go hand in hand. However, I do agree that the need and ability to communicate is vital, from what I have seen so far I am reasonably confident that he can do it and do it well. Time will tell of course.
Oh God another one who points out typos....mybad!:rolleyes:Quote:

He had his chance to alay our fears somewhat, in the press conference yesterday but what do we get?!
Some tripe taken straight out of the George W. Bush book of shíte.
"I'm the boss. I'm the gaffer. At the end of the day what I say goes, the buck stops with me."
I'll be waiting to see if performances pick up before I make any real judgments, but I thought the press conf was OK. Certainly no further reason for any doubts anyone may have had beforehand. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, not reading the recipe.
i dunno ....ask marco van basten.Quote:

Well said sir! Lets give Staunton and his team a chance!Quote:

He's been working on a training ground the last 35 years and has no problem doing that.
I don't think Stan had it in mind to get Robson employed as his assistant because he said in the press conference that Robson won't be involved in the lead up to games. I found that a bit odd. Robson used the word "assist" quite a few times and I'm certain he is thinking of himself as Stan's assistant. They need to sort out their roles though asap.
I believe Staunton will have the team motivated more than ever before. From what I read you'd go out and die for your country after Stan gave half time or pre match team talk. If something most people agree on about Kerr its that he didn't seem to really motivate the players. They never went out in the 2nd half and looked twice the team. If Stan can't motivate the players, nobody can.
The appointment of Kevin MacDonald seems a decent one too. I read/heard some punter/journalist saying he was suprised MacDonald hasn't been snapped up to manage an English club. His Aston Villa reserve team are 3rd in the league with the best defensive record. Bobby likes his teams to play fancy attacking football, MacDonald seems to make defense his priority, add that with Stan's motivational skills and whatever else he has in his locker it could be an excellent combination.
Finland have just hired Roy Hodgson. For the firmly anti- Staunton / Robson camp: a better or worse choice than ours?
A waffler par excellance with lots of experience but little recent success. Reminds me of David Pleat.
just curious eirebhoy, where did you read about this?Quote:

Now we've got an expert on puddings who never actually had to make one all by himself ( luckily then that he has one of the most experienced pudding makers in the world with him) . I bet the pudding tastes as sweet as it can with the ingredients he's given.
Now, end of metaphors!!
i like cake....
I have just had a look at the press conf.
It's first time I have heard Stan talk for longer than 10 words. The lad absolutely knows no fear. He believes he has a good deal more to offer the team apart from motivation.
Its clear that himself and Bobby did not spend much time beforehand defining responsibilities. They both look mature enough to establish acceptable boundaries but it will be Stan who defines Bobby's role. Judging by my wife's favorable response, Stan is already a hit with the housewives.
I just know John Delaney will be left with egg on his face and it wont be from licking the mixing bowl.
That doesn't say much for you.Quote:
