It's not about whether the players repect a coach or not, the coach has a lot to answer for.

In this group, we threw away 3 critical leads. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that you take the game to the opposition, and not interfere with the side when in front, i.e. let them play, instead of insisting they must defend their lead at all costs. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to get your side to play good football, instead of aimlessly firing "Hail Mary's" forward for the sake of it, especially when you don't have the players to do it.

It also doesn't take an Einstein coach to know that you sub a forward for a forward when 2-0 up after half an hour, not a midfielder. You do that when 2 up with 15' to go, not after half an hour. You don't disrupt the shape of the side, by playing players out of position either. That's not about respect, they are basic coaching techniques.

Kerr made those basic mistakes, which cost us qualification. He, and he alone must take the blame for the failure to qualify, and face the music.

Have the FAI said when they will go public with the results of their discussions today? Has there been a press conference arranged for an announcement?

This sorry mess comes down to a fundamental point - Should the FAI get rid of Kerr no matter who comes in to replace him? At the moment it looks like this is what the FAI are going to do!
If MON was available I would jump at the opportunity - if the choice is Bobby Robson / Kenny Dalglish etc stick with Brian
I hope the FAI have enough cop on to know who we are getting

Philippe Troussier, knows the game worldwide, and he's 25/1 with Paddypower, surely worth a tenner.

No,i wasnt joking but i realise it's a long shot and it would be a risky one even if he did somehow end up in the hot seat,but if they are going to look to a continental coach then i suppose he might come into the reckoning,he knows our players too,having worked in england which other continental candidates may not. but while id say finances will dictate a less glamorous appointment i dont think he is any bigger a risk than an ex-player unproven in management for example someone like Staunton or Keane.

anyway,i know id pay good money to see the twinkle eyed tinkerman have a phonetic blast at amhrain na bhfian.:D :D that would be quality:ball:

No im not. I remember watching a documentary on the irish team before, I think it was in a match we were playing against lithuania and he was really giving it loads in the dressing room before the match. Also he wasnt short of a few words before any of our games in Japan/South Korea 2002. I'd have no problem with stan taking the job at all if kerr isnt offered a new deal. Why Not? Klinnsman had no experience when he took over Germany, and Van Basten the same when he took over the Dutch, both experienced internationals..........just like stan!!

M O'N would be my choice for obvious reason but I'd say it's higly unlikely.

But considering how quiet he's been on the matter as opposed to Robson, Ferguson, O'Leary etc my hope has grown ever so slightly.

I'd rather keep Kerr though over people like Peter Reid, Joe Kinnear, Bobby Robson and some of the other names mentioned.

I can see Kenny Dalglish taking the job,the salary would suit him compared to alot of the other names doing the rounds.I don't think this would be a good move as I feel the game has passed him by,imo it's either him or Troussier.Anyone know what the odds on Dalglish are?

i think i should get the job . my cv lists winning the world cup with germany , getting to group stages of the champions league with sligo rovers , winning 5 consecutive la ligas with real madrid and winning the champions league with lazio. all this in championship manager but i see no reason why i cant translate this success into a real life setting.

I also feel that I deserve to once again manage my country, having previously wont the world cup 3 times with them, as well as winning the champions leageue 4 times with sligo rovers.

However, my lack of experience in la liga may swing it in favour of Gustavo

i wasnt too upset about the speculation that kerr would be sacked but now he has, i am devasated. i'm getting sick and fed up of irish managers coming into this job and starting from scratch again. we should have just stuck with him, there are no viable alternatives out there for the money we are offering and its a complete joke. i reallt cannot explain how upset i am about this decision, it will cost irish soccer dearly for the next 3 years

Philippe Troussier was 25/1 but now has no odds. He'll go down to about 5/1 now.

Would Troussier be any good? A bit of a loose cannon by all accounts but Japan played really good football under him.

Who managed japan in 1998? Their results were poor but their style of play was very pleasing on the eye.

I reckon they'll bide their time and see who's available in due course. If they have their wits about them they'll appoint a bulge bracket headhunting firm who can execute a fully professional recruitment mandate away from the attention of the press.

Salary shouldn't be an obstacle. The package should be a base salary plus performance related bonuses. Bonus to be based on points achieved against teams from Pots 1 to 3, and outright qualification. If these guys want to be well paid let them earn it.

I'm worried.......... MON is the man but he won't come on board a sinking ship when the Man Utd post is on the horizon.

Listening to Brady & Giles on dunphy's show this morning. Anyone hear it?

It was the usual names being thrown about, Allardyce, Troussier etc. but they also discussed the possibility of Roy taking the job. Dunphy said he'd be mad to but Brady & Giles said he could do well......you can't substitute UEFA badges for experience and Keano has plenty of that, he's learnt his football from two greats of the English game (Clough & Ferguson). He knows the game and what's is needed on the pitch, sure he does have the manager's job when he on the pitch.

I know he has no Management experience but he would't be the first to get an Intl. job eg Hughes for Wales and Beckenbauer for Germany.

What do you think?

And who would look after the friendlies which he doesn't do ? A different management team for them? I'd prefer someone committed to the concept of international football rather than someone who often put his club first even ahead of a play off game in Iran.

Martin O'Neill or failing that John Aldridge. Can't see much beyond those two.

I'm not sure he'd do it straight away. He could be the manager after the next one.

I have mixed views on him in general but I was perfectly happy to put aside my personal opinion of him when he played for us so I'd have no problem with him managing us either. It'd be a gamble but I think he could do it. He and Dinny Irwin!

Under no circumstances should people like Dalglish be let anywhere near this job (though I did notice Rafael Scheidt kept a clean sheet at OT last night )

Philippe Troussier is my dark horse for the job. He impressed 'apparently' last time around but I think we need someone with a bit more passion and fire than a tactical bod.

MON would be my ideal choice but it's gonna depend on his family (don't know how far his wife's recovery has progressed). Kenny is a NO, I'd rather have Kerr back or Mick.

I saw Otto Rehaggel listed at 25/1 this morning. Not somebody that had immediately sprung to anybodys mind but he must be getting touted in some circles to be suddenly mentioned. Worth a flutter and wouldn't be a bad candidate. Has proven credentials and is current European champion with a bunch of previously unheralded footballers. Having gone out of the WC he may have reached his peak with Greece and could now look for greener pastures. Although, coming from the Med to scouring the Championship on a p!ssy evening in february may not appeal!

haven't thought about him, if he can turn Greece into European champions then anything is possible.

The first thing he did when he got to Celtic was change his title from "coach" to "manager". He doesn't seem to talk to his players. He doesn't do training. He doesn't give a team-talk before matches. He is not renowned for playing good football and is not the type of manager that would give a midfielder a free role.

He has a magnificant record but I probably wouldn't want him as Ireland boss.

Whatever O'Neils methods he consistantly got results which is what matters
at the end of the day.
He is 3-1 favourite at Paddy Power and we would be lucky to get him.
