Brendan Clarke and Patrick Hickey have signed new contracts with Galway. 2 big ones for Galway to keep a hold of
Huge news for us - ask any United fan to name the 2 players they’d want signed back for next season and Clarke and Hickey would be pretty much on every list
Would prefer Whelan or O'Reilly than Maher
Maher has shown he's no better keeper than Pohls,as evidenced by his slack keeping for the shels goal on Friday.
There does appear to be changes due at derry though whether that's in the dugout or on the pitch probably depends on the cup final result yeah?
Reality is Higgins still has another year on his contract so that would be up to the Derry board to remove him. Most of the supporters are of the opinion that cup final win or not its time for a change. The issue is who is actually out there?
There will be massive changes team wise this year as currently we have Maher, Ryan, Coll, S.McEleney, Wisdom (I believe), Oreilly, Patching, Fats, Whelan all out of contract.
Even so Id say if we could keep Maher, Oreilly, Coll and Whelan the rest I wouldnt be to bothered about but the reality is we will sign the rest and lose 3 out of 4 that I would keep.
Is McEleney really Irish League bound? We're is he rumoured to be going too
IMO the best player we had at Dundalk when fully fit under Kenny, sensational footballer and although he had serious success in his career, injuries have stop him doing so much more.
His performance against Vitesse Armen in Holland was sensational and when we played Arsenal it was clear as day he was technically every bit as good as the Arsenal lads
Genuinely I wouldnt keep him. Now that isnt a case of me disputing his talent and ability because that is very much unquestionable but he offers us nothing due to the issues he has had with injuries. When he has came on for a cameo he doesn't really change the game that often as he hasn't really got the time to do so. Would love a fully fit Patrick McEleney but that just is not going to happen.
Larne was the rumour at one point but he could potentially end up with Declan Devine at Glentoran if he stays in his job.
As for Whelan it was suggested he was point blank refusing to sign a contract as he didnt want to play on the plastic pitch. Cant really blame him either. I would say that he will shine next season whoever he signs with once he gets a good pre season under his belt.
Is there a wholesale squad rebuild on the cards at Derry? If so would you trust Higgins to do it, or does Higgins work with someone else in recruitment? From the outside looking in I see some of the issues that started raising their head at the end of Longs tenure at Bohs that have troubled us right up to the most recent summer window where we tried to sign players who were kinda ready made and as a result probably on larger wages than their performances deserved.
LMFM reporting that Dundalk’s Ryan O'Kane is in talks with shels. He’s a good prospect but a bit surprised at that one given the amount of wingers shels already have. Unless some are leaving that I’m not aware of
After double ACL he is dead right to not want to play regularly on an artificial surface, its the one injury there is no debating the stats that ACLs are more common though some research also suggests that the different footwear is the factor but either way its not a risk he should take. Purely on a self interest basis, Ive scrubbed in on high double figures ACL repairs at this stage and there is always chat on why the number of these surgical cases on are increasing year on year, one issue is that in the past many ACL injuries were inoperable, now its routine. But the ortho surgeons all say that kids should be coached in basically how to fall more on a hip than knees to ground first, avoid planting a foot hard in a way that lets the knee turn in, ban sliding on the knees celebrations and that all this can be coached. There is also an expection that the numbers for women will just explode and at younger ages as biomechanically they are built for the worst position a knee can end up causing ACL injury.
O'Kane is quite a Duff/Shels signing I think. They've tried to recruit from within the league as much as possible and have gone heavy on depth in that area of the pitch previously. He's obviously not the finished article yet but clearly has talent to work with.
Stefan Radosavljevic, Charlie Wiggett, and JR Wilson leaving Sligo Rovers
Its a good move if he isnt staying at Oriel. Duff could be very good for him not just on wing craft but ye just feel he can add polish to the talent.
Danny Grant has left Bohs. Sadly just hasn't been able to recapture the form from his first spell at the club.
Will be interesting to see what Grant does next. By all accounts had Bohs and Pats offering him a lot of money at the time of his return, so I can see why they've not re-signed him given he's had little return on that investment, but at the same time you'd imagine he's taking a pay cut wherever he ends up. Still looks a player in there from the limited I've seen of him, just that it wasn't clicking.
He had a much better 2nd half of the season but he's just not the player he was unfortunately. Not the same amount of pace he once had and a bit too indecisive now where previously he would be at a man and drive towards goal he's very hesitant to take on anyone. I think there is still a player in there but you're right that he's just not justified his wage since he came back.
Dundalk to announce new manager 2morro…..
Rumour that Talbot is gone from Bohs too. Didn't make sense for him or the club for him to stick around as a backup keeper especially as he's probably a high earner.
I just find it odd they are looking to get one in so early, as god alone knows where things will end and where we will be in 2025.
Unless they have assurances of a licence already / funds for next season, as I`ll be blunt, I wouldn't be going near the place in the previous 'life support' status if I was a manager.
Didn't Roddy C last something like 2 weeks or so at Cork City one year due to similar stuff, or was that a new owner came in - thankfully he's busy plugging his book still !
Kirk, Grant and Talbot all gone? While none have been confirmed, I don't think they will be missed as none were outstanding, all very ordinary this season albeit Talbot only played twice and would be behind Choradska next season. Good to see Bohs clearing out or letting players leave so easily, hopefully they have better replacements lined up, including a striker who'll score goals
Yeah and TBH Talbot hasn't been the same since he picked up a few shoulder injuries on international duty. I'd say 2 big earners gone there in Grant and Talbot. While Kirk probably isn't on massive money he's was very suspect all season. Fingers crossed there's a new left full lined up because there are none under contract at the club to the best of my knowledge
Brad Wade, Jack Doherty, Cian Murphy, Cian Bargary,? John O’Donovan and Aidan Dowling depart Cork City, thought Jack Doherty might have been given an opportunity in the Premier Division but Clancy obviously didn’t like what he seen….
Think Ciarán Behan, Dónal Higgins and Danú Kinsella-Bishop are the ones likely to leave UCD this year, having finished college. Three attacking options, though we struggled up front this year tbh, and they only managed 8 goals between them.
From the 19s, we have Sam Mohan, Adam Brennan, Hugh Parker and Roy Lawlor coming through, and they look very promising options based on the Youth League games in particular.
Kilduff in at Dundalk per Dan McDonnell.
Started knocking a few in midway during the season. If he can build on that next year - and probably he can, though Danú didn't for whatever reason - he could become the 15-goal forward we missed this year but tended to have in our other First Division campaigns. Still in the "let's see" group for now I think.
Jeez remember when Cork used to just constantly sign Sligo players.
Great days.
