Just for the sake of argument, say a player born and raised in Ireland decides to declare for Nigeria, would they still be counted as an EU player, due to their Irish passport?
The South Americans do it all the time don't they? Get Italian/Spanish citizenship based on some distant ancestor (longer than grandparent I think) but they never counted towards any limits in Serie A/La Liga or similar.
Where there's cash there's a way...
Looks like Zefi is going to Roma, can't say I'm overly excited about that move. He's not a kid anymore, needs to get out and play some senior football to see if he's any good at it (I have my doubts).
"Youngster Rocco Vata could be heading for the exit door as interest from Italy continues to grow in the B team starlet. Bologna have been strongly linked with the forward but a new name in the frame has emerged in the shape of Como FC. Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano states they can offer a different kind of project and guaranteed minutes with talks set to follow." (Daily Record, 15 Jan)
Bit of an update from the weekend:
Franco Umeh scored two equalisers in the last five minutes of Crystal Palace's 3-3 draw at Blackburn, bringing his season's total to seven in eleven league appearances. Zak Gilsenan and Rory Finneran came on as subs for Rovers: https://www.premierleague.com/match/...tal-palace-u21
Jamie Mullins scored and assisted for Brighton in a 4-2 win against Liverpool. Trent Kone-Doherty was a sub for the Reds:https://www.premierleague.com/match/...-liverpool-u21
Ollie O'Neill got the assist on Fulham's late winner against Derby: https://www.premierleague.com/match/...21-v-derby-u21
Zefi's transfer gets stranger as time passes. There's no announcement on Roma's website, there's actually no mention of Zefi on the website at all, nothing on their facebook or instagram accounts - the only acknowledgement by the club that the transfer has gone through is one post on their twitter account
Do they commonly announce Primavera team signings though?
Because that's what he is I presume.
Only if he brings his own pasta, Stu.
Nathan Fraser off the mark, grabs a goal against Brentford!
Tony Springett has joined Northampton on loan from Norwich
Five goals for Irish players in the Premier League Cup last night - two for Mark O'Mahony against Hull, two for Zak Gilsenan against Sheffield United, and one for Alex Murphy against Nottingham Forest
Sam Curtis also made his first appearance for the Blades' U21 side
Gilsenan's goals below
O'Mahony's goals are on YouTube, at 3:45 and 4:18 on the link below, scored from a total of about 3 yards.

Not u21 but underage related. Keilan Quinn (2007) born in England signed for Aston Villa from West Brom for £1m on deadline day. His dad is from Sion in Tyrone.
Brace for Zak Gilsenan against Derby today. Brings his total for the season to eleven: https://www.premierleague.com/match/...urn-rovers-u21
Jamie Mullins was also on the scoresheet for Blackburn against Stoke: https://www.premierleague.com/match/...1-v-albion-u21
Brighton, Bruges and (of course) Celtic are reported to be trying to sign Patrick Casey. Brighton would seem the option, though it would put him straight up against Mark O'Mahony who is a similar age to Casey.
Seems not to be that many Irish players playing for PL2 clubs right now but those that are had a pretty big impact today:
Joe O'Brien-Whitmarsh and Luke Pearce both hit the target as Southampton beat Crystal Palace 4-0. Jake Grante was in The Eagles' line-up: https://www.premierleague.com/match/...tal-palace-u21
Good night for Dara McGuinness with a goal and an assist in Stoke's 2-1 win at Derby: https://www.premierleague.com/match/...stoke-city-u21
Mark O'Mahony scored for Brighton, however they lost 4-1 to West Ham. Jamie Mullins lined out for Brighton, while Sean Moore came on as a sub for the Hammers: https://www.premierleague.com/match/...ham-united-u21
Last weekend Zak Gilsenan opened the scoring as Blackburn thrashed Forest 5-1. Connor O'Riordan also played: https://www.premierleague.com/match/...urn-rovers-u21
JAmie Mullins was on target for The Seagulls against West Brom, as they won 2-1:https://www.premierleague.com/match/...ich-albion-u21
O'Brien-Whitmarsh also scored for Southampton against Stoke - he has made a good start since his January move. He was joined in the Saints' line-up by Luke Pearce while Dara McGuinness and Darius Lipsiuc played for the Potters: https://www.premierleague.com/match/...stoke-city-u21
As mentioned in the Under 19 squad thread, Trent Kone Doherty scored against Man City for Liverpool's U21s last weekend
Goal here at 5:14
Cathal Heffernan scored Newcastle's second in a 3-2 win against Sunderland in the PL2

Bunch of Irish goalscorers in PL2 over the weekend:
A brace for Dara McGuinness in Stoke's 2-2 draw with Arsenal: https://www.premierleague.com/match/...-v-arsenal-u21
Zak Gilsenan got the only goal of the game for Blackburn against Liverpool, his sixteenth of the season in all comps - Rory Finneran was credited with an assist: https://www.premierleague.com/match/...-liverpool-u21
Sean Moore, who's still 18, and Niall McAndrew, who's only 16, scored for West ham and Derby respectively in their tie: https://www.premierleague.com/match/...21-v-derby-u21
Luke Pearce kept his recent run of goals going, with his fifth in six games against Norwich: https://www.premierleague.com/match/...outhampton-u21
John Clarke scored a late equaliser for Reading against Spurs after coming on as an 84th minute sub: https://www.premierleague.com/match/...-v-reading-u21
Trent Kone Doherty scored the opener at Old Trafford in Liverpool’s win over United. Think the commentator said it was his 13th of the season, which isn’t a bad total from the wing.
There was also one time where he showed absolutely incredible pace, dribbling past players into space, it only ended up a corner but flashes of excellence.
He’s not far off being ready for a call up to the Ireland u21s if he’s not there already
He has done so well in his 2 seasons at Liverpool even though he missed half of last season with injury. Love how Liverpool have developed him more as a central player rather than purely a wide player. Carvalho, Clark, Doak koumas and kaide gordan are ahead of him as young backup wide attackers for Liverpool so difficult to see how he progresses next season unless most of the above move out on loan.
Yet another goal for Luke Pearce, in Southampton's 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest. His record was kind of spotty up to now, but now he's on six in seven games. Anyone know if we should be getting excited about this lad? https://www.premierleague.com/match/...ttm-forest-u21
Goal and an assist for Franco Umeh on Tueday night in a 4-2 win against Everton in the Premier League International Cup
Sean Grehan was in defence, and Joseph Gibbard was an unused substitute
Goal at 1:24, assist at 2:00
Palace will play PSV in the final for the second year running
