Played two qualifiers for the U19s in 2019
Late sub V Switzerland: https://www.fai.ie/ireland/news/irel...st-switzerland
V Gibraltar, where he scored https://www.fai.ie/ireland/match/24/...198?tab=report
Was an unused sub against Austria in the final group game
How is his Gram looking for the bit of Eire love lads ? :D
There's no love for Engerland on there either Crafty. He's a little tease
The fact he turned up for that 20s game when a tonne of people pulled out is a pretty good sign.
Thanks, hadn't realised he had been part of that squad. He seems the obvious candidate to lead the line for the Under 21s in the next campaign so hopefully he will want to do that. Looks to be well ahead of Odubeko who got a few games in the last campaign but is struggling down in League 1. Sinclair Armstrong the other main option but Cannon looks more ready for it at this point.
Outshines strike partner Troy Parrott again today, scoring the opener after Parrott had already been subbed off. Greg Cunningham given the assist.
Should Cannon be in the senior squad over Parrott this month I wonder? They've the same number of league goals this season, but Cannon has played half as many games.
Parrott's best attributes for us seem to be around the build-up rather than as an out-and-out goalscorer. This month may be a little soon for Cannon (unless there are some injuries; Robinson is out already, I think), but if he keeps it up he'll have to be looked at seriously. Do we have games lined up this summer?
Greece away and Gibraltar at home in Euro qualifying.
would be shocked if cannon is near parrott in the national team pecking order
I don't think they're really competing with each other to be honest. Cannon is a centre forward, his competition would be the likes of Ferguson and Idah. Parrott is a second forward, he'd be competing with the likes of Ogbene, Robinson and Connolly. Obafemi is an interesting option in that he looks suited to both positions.
Certainly no shortage of options up front, even if there's nobody who is prolific at this point in time. The age profile of those eight as a group is excellent.
As does Ferguson which is why I think they'll make the best front two for us. Similar Idah has played both roles for Norwich. When Smith had him and Pukki starting together in a 4-4-2 they'd take turns on who'd play as the 9 and who'd drop back into a deeper role.
Goal apart, Cannon did ok. Nothing overly impressive, but took goal very well. Parrott created a nice chance for himself with some tidy footwork in the first half but had a game effort with his left, beyond this he was pretty ineffective. I would have both Parrott and Cannon in the squad
Another goal for Cannon away to Rotherham. Assist from Brady.
If it came to it I'd probably rather see him called up than Will Keane, Scott Hogan or James Collins. Presumably none of them will be called up though as it will be Ferguson/Obafemi/Idah/Ogbene and Parrott. But if there's a further drop out (Robinson and Connolly already gone) he should maybe be considered for Latvia?
I'd agree with that and be happy to give him a shot ahead of parrot. Parrot has stagnated or possibly on a slight downward trajectory we know what he offers. Test his (cannons)resolve. What's there to lose including cannon ahead of him and giving him time against Latvia? But Kenny's been hinting that the squad is settled and picked for this qualification in mind
Is there a recall clause in the loan from Everton? They could do with a reliable goal scorer,
Just stuck this game on and he’s hit the bar. Did very well, showed great strength to hold off the Rotherham defender and from a very tight angle hit the crossbar
Don't believe in calling up dual-eligible players to "test their loyalty". Manager should just reach out privately to the player, say player's form merits consideration for a call-up, and ask if the player is ready to make that final commitment. If the player wants time to be sure, give him space to make the decision.
In general I agree with you to be fair, but I think in this case there's also an argument for call up on merit, so I think it's worth having that conversation now.
I wouldn't be overly upset if he said no, I'd rather that than another drawn out saga of will he won't he.
All the space his heart desires if that's the case, plenty space outside our squads to be enjoyed. We might be surprised how taking a perceived soft option off the table focuses the mind & meanwhile we have plenty lads who need the squad space & who we need.
There isn't anything definite about this guy but it seems to keep cropping up about him online in various discussions, his longer term intentions. We'll soon see I guess, he's looking at both Parrott and Delap at the moment & thinking he offers more than either.
Is there any particular reason why so many people think this lad is not committed? Has he said something to suggest that or is it just because he hasn't played much for us (which is down to him not being picked for the most part - him being born in late December was unhelpful in terms of Ireland underage callups)?
For what it's worth, given that he'd likely comfortably make the England Under 21 squad on form I'm not sure the hard option (take a senior cap to tie him or **** off) is the way to go here. He has played competitively for us so if he goes, he's gone for good under the rules.
Having said all that we don't really want to end up in an Elliot Anderson situation either (he's publicly on the fence in terms of Scotland and England), but maybe just keeping him with the Under 21s for this campaign is the best approach and see where we are in a year or two.
If he wasn’t committed, I doubt he would have made the trip to Whitehall for the u20s a year ago - it was beyond grim.
Hopefully it didn't put him off the whole setup!
On that note, Tom Hill, who was in that U20 squad, has been called into the Welsh U21s for a friendly against Scotland
https://www.faw.cymru/en/news/matty-...land-friendly/
Interesting one. He missed that u20s squad through injury. He’s also missed the last few months with Liverpool due to injury - didn’t realise he was back, hasn’t made a reserves squad despite them having space on their bench.
Good creative player but horrible injury issues. Most likely someone who never makes an impact due to the injury issues and drops way down the leagues but there’s very high upside if his body settles down.
Shame if he ends up with Wales rather than us
To be honest I'd be surprised if Hill's long term destination is anywhere other than non league or, more likely, retirement due to injury. He plays hardly any games at any level. He'll probably end up pulling out of that Wales squad injured.
I'd pick Cannon right now as a legitimate option, which happens to neatly dovetail into the cap him and tie him (not quite) argument.
There is possibly a situation vs France where we are a couple down late in the game and we need to try something. Would he merit an introduction if such a situation presented itself right now? Probably. It would put most of the arguments to bed pretty quickly, without being a premature move, or seen as cynically as it could be in other circumstances.
Just been named in the 21s squad in cork next week.

Jim Crawford says Cannon is all in with us
Handy lad to have since we have a lot of forwards shooting blanks
It’s like a Cannon and Ball skit in here lads
Even RTE are getting in on the puns now.
https://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2023...ospect-cannon/
Really slick finish to put PNE 3-0 up. Will be hard to ignore if keeps scoring. Parrott also started, not doing great again, trying too hard and taking too much out of ball. Not looking good for Parrott, needs a few goals
Seven more games this season for Parrott to earn a club for himself next season. Wonder where it'll be? Does he drop down to League One again?
Increasingly you'd say Cannon should be in the squad in June ahead of Parrott
Hard to continue to justify Parrott ahead of Cannon. Disappointing about Troy. Every time I watch him he impresses me less and less. He does seem to find it difficult to return to form after injuries. He’s taken off now for Liam Delap, so no goals for him again today
