Just reading about the final play off round before the World Cup next year. Could they make it any more complicated?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_F...ion_play-offs)
Tis fairly mental all right.. and still no word yet on whether the UEFA play offs will be seeded, or how they will allocate venues for the play offs.
Though, I expect both, which would likely mean that the three seeded teams that go straight to the play off final, will get home venue advantage in the play offs
No matter what however, it's imperative that Ireland win today. If they do, and get one of the three allocated seedings, they'll be one or maximum two games away from the finals.
Even if they were go win their play off and end up down in NZ, they'd be the highest seeded team at the play offs and be in Group A, waiting on a second play off final
Really want them to get there.
They've brought in Aoibhean Clancy from Wexford Youths.. I remember her playing with a tiny girls club down here in Tipp when she started out.. great player
Just read the UEFA site now.. no seedings in the play off semis.. and no seedings in the second round draw either.. you could get very lucky.. or get a crap draw ;(
Been reading the thread and following the games, and this may be a bit of a controversial observation, but I notice there is a tendency to refer to the Girls in Green as "them," "their prospects," "they have a good chance" etc etc, whilst the men's team are referenced in the first person "us" ""our prospects" etc. Does this imply a tiny bit of sexism? (reaching for my tin hat as I speak)
Not the best performance again.. but if it finishes 1-0.. I'll be happy.. need to get the English league games into their legs to build the sharpness before the playoffs
COME ON OUR GIRLS!!!!
Been a professional performance without doing anything wildly spectacular.
Slovakia putting together some decent passages of play themselves, so holding out at 1-0 and looking comfortable at pretty much all times has been pleasing.
Not the most fantastic game of football you'll ever see, but doing what needs to be done.
Terrible game overall.. really nervy.. but the result was all that mattered
On a side note.. Hamilton would give you ire with his commentating.. he's a f***ing jinx
I was wondering who made the foolhardy claim that Ireland hadn't an earthly of finishing in the top 3. There must be a lot of egg on that persons face.
Play off permutations
1st - have to win (obvious)
2nd assuming they win
To get straight to the finals, they must be drawn against and beat either Switzerland or Iceland
Or
Win their play off, and hope either Switzerland or Iceland lose theirs
Or
Win their play off, and hope Iceland only win theirs on penalties (Iceland will then only get one point extra, Ireland will get three)
Or
Win their play off, and win their inter continental play off in February
Seeing as Ireland have bettered Finland twice that puts them a few steps up in the rankings, I'd say, avoid Belgium and Austria in the play off draw and the chances are 51/49.
Reading about the play off draw: https://www.uefa.com/womensworldcup/...f-draw-friday/
Didn't realise both rounds are a completely open draw, I thought we had avoided Switzerland and Iceland by going straight into the second round.
Me too.. thought there'd be home draw advantage for getting into top 3 too, but there isn't
Best case scenario now would be Switzerland and Iceland playing each other.. and getting Wales or Bosnia in Tallaght..
Scotland or Austria away from home .... Could be better and could be worse ... Avoided Switzerland/Iceland/Belgium who are strong.
Austria finished behind England in qualifying, and won every game in the qualifiers, apart from two losses to England and a draw against the North
Tough one all right.. could have been better but I suppose being honest, all the teams left in the play offs were in and around each other in rankings, so the best we could have hoped for was a home draw.. and didn't get it
Austria ranked 12th in Europe, Scotland ranked 14th.. we're ranked 16th
Belgium could conceivably beat Iceland (should they face them) in one of the other play offs, so that would give us a path straight to the finals should we win
Huge, huge game all right
It is kind of hard to judge in womens football though, certainly harder than in the male equivalant
In the games that mattered i.e. between the top 3 teams in each group
Austria's record - played 4 w 1 d 1 l 2
Ireland's record - played 4 w 2 d 1 l 1
Austria gave up goals to N Ireland in both games (1 at home, 2 in Belfast)
It's going to be tough.. but its WC qualification, it was always going to be tough
Maybe this might prove 1 tournament too soon.. but we're definitely there and thereabouts for the next Euro's.. any qualification for a major finals would have been huge (missing out on England was a real loss )
they really should have lost in Belfast, only equalised in the last minute

Scotland had a similar record in qualifying to Austria, won every game except for the two against group winners Spain, and a draw against third placed Ukraine, who were leading in that game until a last minute equaliser from Scotland

There'd not a lot between any of the three teams I'd say
It's not the quality of the opposition that's the import here but that it's an away fixture. IMO such a game, a final play-off for a world cup finals should either be 2 legged or played at a neutral venue. The strong advantage should not be given to one team by a virtual toss of a coin, I think that's insulting to the ethics of sport considering the prize, the highest on offer.
Regardless, for numerous reasons I'd be hoping that Scotland can scrape a win v Austria.
Frankly, it's b..LS..t!
Scotland v Austria tonight..
Portugal beat Belgium tonight to move to a home game v Iceland
Scotland it is... hopefully Veras knowledge of the Scots will pay off
Biggest game in Irish football is on tonight..
The women qualifying for the World Cup would be huge for the womens game here, and bring a huge amount of publicity to the FAI and game in general in Ireland
Both other games currently 1-1 with 15 mins left to play.. vert surprised UEFA didn't start all three together
On the upside, both Ireland and Scotland will know exactly what they're playing for by half time
Iceland also down to 10 women since the 59th minute
Switzerland battering Wales on possession stats.. 76/24.. but finishes 1-1.. heading to extra time
Portugal 2-1 up...
