Interestingly, Galway FC manager Tommy Dunne's dad (Theo) was manager of UCD for more than a decade. Tommy's cousin is Longford Town manager Tony Cousins who deservedly won promotion a few weeks ago. Tony was at the game in UCD Bowl tonight. Their other cousin is Rep of ireland legend Richard Dunne.
Only way ucd can save this is to tell callaghan to stay in dublin.
I'm looking forward to Friday night now!! :D
Agree with that of course.
I think on today's game - and this will sound strange, but bear with me! - Galway did take a bit of time to adjust to the Premier Division standard. But second half, when we should have been looking to kill them off, they improved and pegged us back, and we fell back, and that turned into a vicious circle. Really missed the two in midfield tonight; we were crying out for someone to put their foot on the ball. But we're still in it.Friday's a new game, even though it would have been handier without the two late goals!
Anyone know if Soccer Republic will be showing highlights later?
Benson is a class above for UCD and Creevy has been one of your better players anything I've seen them.
Did Callaghan sneak into the dugout for the last few minutes?
Lol! No, I was keeping an eye on him throughout :p
Rare in football that justice is done but tonight it was, UCD were very poor even their goal was against the run of play in the first half, Galway had two penalty shouts turned down.Thought the ref was poor.Hopefully Galway finish the job on Friday.
I dunno. First half, Galway were the worst team I've seen all season. And I've seen teams lose to us.
We defended very well the second half - but we had to. Certainly couldn't really complain about the draw. But two goals in injury time is nasty.
I thought the peno shouts were weak tbh. Handball claims which were clearly to the chest; that kind of thing.
Hope to see Galway seal the deal. Should be a great away day for all supporters!
Agreed stu, neither call was close to a penalty. Thought Ucd missed a big chance tonight, Galway were there for the taking but playing for the 1-0 came back to bite them on the arse. Couldn't understand why Cannon and Kavanagh were taken off, Cannon was causing problems and Kavanagh looked the only one who could get on the ball in the centre. Tie is by no means over, that Galway team aren't as good as the Longford team Bray beat in the playoffs last year. First goal on Friday is massive, the team who gets it will probably go on to win the tie
Kav had a knock, I think. That's what someone beside me said when I asked the same question
Must have alright, was probably the best player in that area of the pitch. With Benson and Creevey in the team should give you a bit more going forward. If Cannon gets a bit more support then you could do damage on friday
The first half was the worst I've seen us play all season. The last few games we had Alex Byrne in midfield so Ryan Connolly was pushed further forward with Manning on the left. Jay Molloy came in for Byrne who was injured and had a poor game but it also meant that Manning and Connolly were moved from their recent positions.
In the second half we were totally dominant but UCD were so negative they were partly to blame. You planned to defend for 45 minutes - and then what another 90 in Galway? You should have kept the pressure on and maybe won 2-0 .
I'd love to see the stats - we must have had at least 15 corners in the match!
Huge crowd now expected in Eamonn Deacy Park, Galway next friday nite for the return leg. They are expecting over 4,000+ to see Galway get the right result and return to Premier League for the town.
I don't think that was an active gameplan just for last night; it's something we've done all season. 90th minute equaliser conceded at home to Limerick. Twice pegged back in Bray (before winning). Let Athlone back into the game in March - 2-0 up and cruising and we ended up hanging on. It's like we're not sure what to do with a lead.
I could believe that corner stat!
There was a decent turnout for the game last night, good few down from Galway & plenty of neutrals I saw Longford,Bray,Rovers fans aswell as a few loi celebs Bucko,Paul Doolin,Kerr & few players, good to see.The President never showed up even though UCD had to waste two rows of seats.Quote:

Played 7 times in Dublin - Shels x 3 (won 2, drew 1); Baby Shams x2 (1 win, 1 draw) and UCD x 2 which were 2 wins.
We won the corner count 13-0 last night! And I dunno who said we are 'expecting' a crowd of 3k+. Hoping for that maybe, but not expecting it. Nice to see Daryl Horgan there last night supporting his baby brother! And Michael D was never turning up seen as he is in Wales opening some poetry centre or the like
Really hope Galway go up even though UCD is my closest team. Always liked Galway as a club and an away trip. Still gonna get the odd did in about the DVD though :p
Thought we started brightly first 10 minutes, and next thing out of nowhere UCD scored. That set us back and for the rest of the half we didn't look the same, without UCD taking over at the same time.
2nd half our lads upped the stakes. Most of the last half hour was played in their half.
Great result, but still have to finish the job on Friday. UCD will have Benson and Creevy back, but hopefully in front of a home crowd our lads can get the job done
Have to say I thought ye were absolutely awful the first ten minutes - some of the misplaced passes were almost comical and most of the game was played in the Galway half. Thought ye started improving from around the half hour, and another big improvement from the second half.
Funny how people can get such divergent views from watching the same match!
this is a fairly accurate neutral report

wonder was Tony Cousins looking at Ryan Connolly on the offchance that Galway Utd dont go up? mind you it didnt stop him getting Kevin O Connor even though he stayed up with Bray!
Was at the game last night, UCD started really really well and Galway looked nervous but second half they really got at UCD who sat back and it cost them. Exciting game even if the standard was a bit scrappy in the second half. UCD keeper was brutal for the first goal but did make an excellent save at the end to keep the tie alive. Was delighted for Galway I have to say, will be fantastic to see them in the premier (sorry UCD fans)
Come on united! Huge crowds expected tonight, arrive early if your going. If you haven't bought your ticket yet the Dail bar are doing a promotion where if you buy a ticket from them you get a free pint of Heineken.
No one joined yet but it looks an obvious one. Wonder will Russler and Conneely head back home as well - is Russell still working as FAI development officer up there?
I'm not sure how they'll do it but I have a feeling UCD will survive!
