I listened to the album in full this evening and taking into account I consider them a band in decline, was pleasantly surprised. The best they've managed in a decade imo.

Excellent album. I love Uberlin and Mine Smells like Honey. Dont see them as a band in decline myself. Their last album ACCELERATE was very good too though the previous one AROUND THE SUN was poor. I thought UP and REVEAL were brilliant and underated. They are also the best band live I have seen...Although a friend of mine thinks they have been in decline since DOCUMENT though I dont agree. The only negative is I feel Michael Stipe's voice is not as good as it was,a bit hoarse, all the smoking catching up on him.
The first R.E.M album I listened to was "Green" and they were already on a more commercial trajectory. Personally, I felt the band began to disappoint with every release beyond that point although partly arrested that decline with "Accelerate".
I only started listening to "Murmur" and "Reckoning" over the last year or so and absolutely love both albums.
I've a huge interest in the IRS stuff currently which spans from "Murmur" to "Document".
What strikes me about those first two albums is how well they stand up today considering when they were recorded. There's not many albums recorded in the early 80's that escaped the gratuitous "Synths" treatment.
Apparently, the band deliberately wanted the sound as stripped down as possible.
Apparently, there's a best of the IRS years album entitled "I feel fine........best of the IRS years" which I'm going to track down.
I comepletely agree with your friend I have to say. They only made sporadically good music since that album. Automatic For The People is probably their best overall record since then. Murmer and particularly Fables of the Reconstruction are my favourite REM albums. They were just awesome back then.
Its either a feast or famine

New Arctic Monkeys single streaming on their website now - Sounds good :D
Picked up Beady Eye's album ahead of the gig last night, and Foo Fighter's offering.
Foo Fighter's is a lot heavier than anything else they've done, but well worth a listen. If you buy the cd (fcuk you iTunes) they've shredded the original master tapes they used to record and included a portion of it in each CD case.
Like a lot have said here, I'm pleasantly surprised by Beady Eye. It's a really laid back, chilled out Rolling Stones kind of an album. Was at the gig in the Olympia last night (they're playing tonight as well) and it was a great gig. Crowd loved Liam, and he loved the attention. Doesn't seem to have changed his clothes since Definitely Maybe, mind!
I had a seat in the upper level, and there was a bit of drama in front of me. A blonde woman came into the seats just before the gig started, and was clearly hammered, barely able to walk properly. Anyway, I took no real notice, she was in a seat two rows straight down from me. She sat down at one point, and the back of her chair broke off, and she went straight through. She was there with two guys and another woman, so presumably two couples. One of the blokes straight away started complaining to a bouncer, and it looked like he was trying to get another seat for them, but the guy was having none of it. Meanwhile the blonde kept sitting down in the seat, and going straight through every time, must have happened 4 times at least! I shouldn't laugh, but it was funny. Eventually the bouncer made some sort of arrangements for them, and they all moved on.
The entire upper circle was hammered. I blame the proximity to the bar.
Well the first album and and TCATS had their heavy moments as did One by One. By far the best offering since There is Nothing Left To Lose.
As regards the piece of Master tape, I was wondering what that was and checking my cd case and it seems I've lost it. :(
Very Much enjoying my fellow Limerickman Mark O'Connors new album 'Espero' ....which features some notable guest appearances -particularily one J Mascis of Dinosaur Jnr playing a blistering lead on Roll Back the Years.

was not only at the gig but recorded the show for him! Mixing it last night and it sounds great.
Can confirm Helplessness Blues by Fleet Foxes is wonderful. Wild Beasts new one, Smother is fantastic as well.
Yep - a great album. It has a bit of a darker edge to it than the first album. Its got that same timeless quality to it.
Enjoying the Vaccines album as well. A great debut and little indications within it that this band are only getting started. I think they have a lot more strings to their bow than the debut would have you believe. They're opening salvo consists of Ramones / Jesus and Mary Chain and a few 80's indie touches but I think they'll broaden their sound quite quickly.
I've not 'got into' the new fleet foxes album just yet. I put it on my iphone last night so I'll be able to listen to it a bit more.
Listened to morning glory for the first time in about 10 years yesterday and it's still the dogs ********.
What are the walkmen like? Worth listening to?
Appropriately enough given their name, I've been spinning Graveyard's 'Hisingen Blues' album to death for the last month since it's release.

My expectations couldn't have been higher and they were comprehensively met.
Fleet Fozes one is sounding good so far alright. This year the latest one from Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti is great, and the one from Panda Bear is also nice, though I probably prefer Animal Collective stuff. Trying to get the new one from The Antlers but downloading here in China is difficult. Anyone heard it? Loved Hospice, and the reviews seem good...damn you Great Firewall :(
Arctic Monkeys 'Suck It And See' out this week. Pretty good but prefererred Humbug myself.
nice beavis! love a. pink and the a.c. - animal collective and radiohead probably ruled the first decade of music in the new century, in these here headphones anyway. check out pink's earlier stuff if you don't have it, 'the doldrums' is great, just as good as 'before today' but wayyyy lower-fi.
you might also like sun araw's 'on patrol' (something like a cross between later era black dice and early a.c.) or james ferraro's 'night dolls with hairspray' - sort've a lo-fi horror high-school soundtrack in the vein of ariel pink's stuff.
although behind the red firewall, i'm not so sure how easy this will be to pick up..! good luck
Nice 1 Ken! Great to get some tips from someone with similar (great) music taste. The language barrier here (and my inherent unsociability ;)) means I'm getting through a serious amount of music, so will definitely check out the Ariel Pink stuff (only heard the latest one) and get to the other recommendations too.
Just so it's not one way traffic, Halcyon Digest from Deerhunter out at the end of last year is a must if you like such music. Also the aformentioned Burst Apart from the Antlers is very good but I find they're not everyones cuppa tea.
Liking the new album - some great Johnny Marr inspired lead guitar work on some of the tunes. Come to think of it, the vocal delivery on some of the songs is not unlike Morrisey either.
I think "Humbug" will end up like one of those albums that gains in critical stature the more time goes on - a bit like "Pinkerton" by Weezer, or "Modern Life is Rubbish" by Blur.
I was the same. I was really looking forward to that album but it turned out to be a disappointment. I've listened to it 4 or 5 times so it's hardly issue of it being a grower like previous Arctic Monkeys' albums. Turner needs to stop focusing stop heavily on the lyrics.
On another note, I can't wait for Coldplay's new album due out at the end of the year. They do an album every three years but they are worth the wait.
New Half Man Half Biscuit LP '90 Bisodol (Crimond)' out in September
Just got "Velociraptor!" by Kasabian.
After one solitary listen, gotta say its absolutely brilliant.
Wasn't sure if they'd repeat the quality of "West Pauper" but I think they may well have surpassed it here.
Arrived in the post the other day. Fantastic record. Excellent review and appraisal of HMHB here -including several soundcloud links etc.
Finally got my hands on Future Islands- On The Water.
Excellent follow-up to the imperious In Evening Air which was going to be a tough act to follow.
