And he couldnt break into the top 4. Dont get me wrong, he did really well but imo there is a big gap between the top four and below.
The club having ambition is great but Im asking for the fans realistic opinion here

I would expect us to break into the top 6.Weve improved throughout the season and have retained the nucleus of last years squad plus 2 very good U21s and I would trust Tony to sign at least 5 more good players to bolster our squad.
The fans that expect us to be challenging for honours ( which we could do) are the younger generation of United supporters. Our defence and midfield were very strong in the last 15 games but we lacked a cutting edge which meant we drew games we should have won with the chances created so a goalscorer and a left back would be the two main priorities for tony.
Fair enough response and I think its where ye should certainly be aiming as a full time team. The top 4 this year +Derry, Rovers, Yerselves and Sligo should be the ones aiming for the top 6 spots given full time status and Rovers attraction as the top part-time Dublin team
That means one fo the 7 will lose out and be drawn into the relegation battle, given 3 teams are going down next year.
Rovers seem to be strengthening considerably, all the top 4 will strengthen, but I wouldnt be sure of Derry yourselves or Sligo.
Who do you think will be the one to lose out?
I dont know who came up with the top four thingy at all. TC said in his interview in the last programme that he wanted to consolidate our position in the Premier. If we finish in the middle (5th, 6th, 7th) I will be happy as it our second season back up. I fully understand the point made as regards aim high etc but in reality for us to break Pat's Bohs Drogs and Cork at this stage is complete fantasy. No harm dreaming of it though!
Leeson came up with the top four thing, it is on the flyer about the new season tickets.
I think we have the bones of a good squad, a jump of two places next year would be quite acceptable, along with a decent run in the cups. Can't see anyone breaking through the existing top 4, think we will join Sligo in the top 6, with Derry and Rovers next. NOt convinced about Robertson, and would reckon the part-time thing will catch up with Rovers again as it did this year. While it is lovely to hear of top 4 aspirations, a reality check is needed.
Guys I'm pretty sure the 'top four' line that appeared in the season ticket flyer is there so plenty of people will want to buy season tickets for 2008, and it's a good tactic by Nick Leeson (which hopefully won't backfire!).
People are being unfair as regards signings, TC still has to work to a budget, I'm sure he will get the best he can given the resources, and I don't accept that the club have huge resources now because of increasing season ticket prices by €80.
Presuming 700 season ticket holders renew this season, the increased financial return will be E56,000, as Square Hehir points out, its not exactly a windfall.
But would be happy with a sixth/seventh finish and hope the football improves, Maybe TC might have gained a bit more confidence in his ability and will be a bit more positive at home against the lower teams. Need a midfielder of stature, a decent striker with Glynn and a left full. At least there is a tight defence to build on and thats always a good starting point
At last some realism in the debate id go with geezer here anything above 7th will be a bonus as long as we avoid relegation and push on again in 2009.
We need at least 5 players looks like we have 2 of them already if the rumours are true which leaves an attacking midfielder, a right sided player and a Goalscorer. Who knows Tony might want 2 more just to bolster the squad further but I cant wait for march.
So if we finish 1 place higher next year that'll be a good year?
Top 6 would be a satisfactory return.....5th or higher would be an excellent season.Avoiding relegation is a given-that is not to be one of the stated aims come pre season.
The Club have made it clear that this years aim is to progress and challenge the Top 4 with Top 6 been the minimum. We're not going to come in the Top 4 but in our second season full time 6th is very much attainable.
By saying 7th will be a bonus as long as we avoid relegation-you're pretty much saying "more of the same please".Is this year not the year to push on?why wait until 2009?It's not even 2008 yet and you're talking about 2009!?
We need another 5 on top of the 2 we have supposedly signed....including a proven goalscorer.
C if we play some of the good football that sligo played this year at home that would keep a lot of Terryland regulars happy. Avoiding relegation where 3 go down is a tall order and every single point will matter. Its just frustrating to see 2 lads up for a corner at home in the last 25 minutes of a game and the score 1-1. Hopefully the experience of this year will stand to TC and he held his nerve in fairness when a lot of us were panicking. The defenses are strong now at fortress terryland lets make impact signings in the middle and upfront. The club have to be positive they have to what else are they gonna say? Every supporter up and down the lands have hope in their hearts when a season starts. Thats the same for UTD, Scunthorpe, Arsenal,QPR even and all clubs, it rarely pans out the way we hoped but it keeps us going year in year out.
Hopefully Tony will deliver, i think we'd all like him to make a success of it.
But there won't be as much tolerance next year if t ain't up to scratch. We've proven we're well able to play when we want to so a good start and consistency is the key next year.
We seemed to(eventually) learn not to conceed goals in the last few minutes towards then end of the season so hopefully we won't drop to many needless points.
Without a doubt I bought into survival is the key to 2007 and I was on the whole happy out . BUT next season I want a whole lot better , now to be honest i don't see us in the top four with the players that have been linked to us so far you are not going to see me doing flick flacks down shop street ( if I could anyway ) that's for sure .
I would be happy with 4 very good players instead of the seven banged on about , now I know that would leave us light but some clubs have those players and yes they are paid a lot on money , but would like like to see just one player in the class of Mooney ,Ndo or McCourt grace Terryland .
It may never happen this season but i would love to see it happen at some stage in my lifetime .......
Claret I agree with you on McCourt et al but I think we won't be in position to attract these players until 2009 at the earliest and only if we are knocking on the door of a top four finish. The early signing of players is crucial so that TC can have his first team identified, this will cut down the need of buying in a raft of new players during the window which would upset things again. A good start with results is crucial we played some good games against the top teams early on this season but didnt get results if we can tirn that around we'll be heading higher up the table in 2008.
On the other forum you've said this about Fagan:
"he wasnt even given a chance. only game i remember him playing was againts waterford and i was impressed with his commitment and he played a solid perfromance on the right wing even though he's a center-mid....."
For McCulloch's ability I'd tend to listen to what Shels fans have to say, for the past 10 years their club has been signing the best players in the league!
I think it's fair to say that the problem you have is that Tony Cousins has signed these players so you'll just criticise them and highlight the ones that don't work out.
did his career not go downhill over the last few years no?. and ya i personally taught in the 1/2 games he played he was ok, needless to say other people think differant and he's gone!.... when in that line did i question Fagen ability i said his career was going downhill which it is/was... motherwell to us(few in between).... McCulloch st.johnston to us (few crap teams in between) hardly coming up in the world!
Some ridiculous comments in this thread. McCulloch is class - best left back we've had since Dave Crawley. Way too good for the First Division and would ease into a team competing for the Premier.
Leech is a class act too.
you cant judge a player until you see him play so for certain posters to be writing off players like Rouse,McCulloch and Leech (none of whom have officialy signed yet) is ridiculous.
Tony would have had all three players watched and his brother actually plays with Monaghan so he would have played with Rouse.
Sorry SFC because you finished where you did some people think you couldn't possibly have any good players.
I'd say St Johnstone to us is a step up, I'd say this is the first club he'll have been a full-time player at.
Anyway here's a clip of Mark Leech scoring 2 and setting up another for Shels in a game this season including a lob from the halfway! :)
Has he actually signed for us or has he just been offered a contract?
