Waddle was a little past his prime by then though.
Sheridan had a fantastic game against the Italians. People also forget that he was a tough tackling midfielder as well. He won his fair share of balls.
Always thought we could have done more with Sheridan.
We could sure do with a Sheridan like player now...

Sheridan's goal against the Spanish when we got beaten 3-1 was almost as important as McLoughlin's goal against NI in getting us to US94. Sheridan was contemplating a move to Blackpool near the end of his career and asked Cascarino for his thoughts on the proposed move. Cas told him they had a great big dipper!

It was not just suits who walked out I saw the game a few weeks ago and there were many who would consider themselves ordrinary joes etc who were walking out. It was not just the corporates that were walking out at 3-0

If someone has to wear a suit for work and then goes to the match after work are they a suit or a real fan?
I think I'm gonna have to make an off topic point about this, a very ordinary Sheffield Wednesday side, are you joking me? A team that included Woods, Hirst, Waddle, Walker and Bright as well as the likes of Worthington, Anderson, Palmer and Bart-Williams and won the League Cup in 91 whilst getting promoted to the old Division One, got to two finals in 93 and came third behind Dirty Leeds and Man Utd in 92? A team that people still talk to me about as a reason they have always had a liking for the Owls? Ordinary we were not! :)Quote:

To go back on topic. I also thought of Kevin Sheedy in a similar way to Sheridan. Both were class players would in their prime would walk into any top class team. They were also so good that they eventually forced Charton to pick em (probably against his natural inclinations).
To me, Gary Waddock getting sent home on the eve of Italia 90 was heartbreaking. If ever a player deserved a place in that squad it was Waddock.

Nobody ever really mentions him when talking about the great sides of the charlton era yet he was a superb passer and was such an intelligent footballer playing in the magnificent liverpool side of the 1980s.

i think most people, including me, were convinced that lee carsley wasn't much of a player, but he's proved us all wrong
steve finnan is another player who doesn't get the credit he deserves. all the attention in 2002 was going to keane/mickmc, robbie and duff and meanwhile steve finnan was one of the best right backs in the competition. hard to believe he started the cameroon match on the bench. the only active irish player with a champions league medal too.
Jason McCateer wasn't all bad for Ireland nor was Alan Kernaghan as limited of a player that he was.
Well funnily-enough we have exactly a Sheridan-type player now and, as with Sheridan, is a little under-appreciated by certain sections of media and fans. He's a classy passer of the ball, great dead-ball specialist and, well, not the quickest...;)Quote:
