is carr not a option lads?
Yeah, I'd like to see Diarmo's lineup against Holland at least.
Would Like to see him going with this, probably our strongest!
GK : Given
RB : Finnan
LB : O'Shea - Not a huge fan but harte offers nothing but dead ball so would opt for oshea
CB : Dunne
CB : O' Brien
RM : McGeady - Defo deserves the chance to show us what he can do
CM : A Reid
CM : Kavanagh, but if there was a possiblilty of Nolan this would change but that aint probably goin to happen!!!!!
LM : Duff
S : Keane
S : Doyle - but probably go with Morrison
Definitely wouldn't have A.Reid in CM. The Dutch and Germans would take him to the cleaners.Quote:

Dont think anyone has mentioned Stephen Ireland, I think we should give him a go alongside Stevie Reid. I think he probably has the best range of passing skills of our midfielders, ya I know hes inexperienced etc but none of the other options are greatly inspiring.
i think its worth taking a risk in the Holland game at least, if he performs well there, then he should start against the Germans.
Still think we've problems on who to play on the right though. Think Carr may not be the quickest these days, but how about him playing in front of finnan on the right?
Agree totally about Carr playing RMH with Finnan Right Full. Has always made sense to me & I'm surprised it hasn't been tried. Finnan is more solid defending & Carr is more aggressive going foward.
If you look at Stephen Ireland playing for City you can see he operates best in the last third, or rather, of all the players we could pick who can unlock a defence with a clever pass it's he. However, he depends a lot on Joey Barton covering every blade of grass for the two of them to be effective together. Steve Reid has similar attributes to Barton & thse two could well forge a partnership, but maybe not just yet.
Lawrence is an option on the right that we've yet to see.
Watching Argentina recently made me recall McGeady vs AC Milan. Wasn't it Colochini (spelling?) that McGeady ran ragged that night? Speaking of Colochini, any UCD fans remember Mark McKenna (''Stick'')? Were he and Colochini separated at birth?
.......now that Carsley has made himself available for selection, we have half a chance of firming up the weakest centre midfield we have had in over 20 years. So:
Given
Finnan
Dunne
O'Brien
O'Shea
Duff
S Reid
Carsley
J O'Brien with McGeady warming up
Keane
Doyle
I'd give Lawrence a long run against Holland to asssess what he has to offer in an international environment.
I don't know about giving Carsley the reins in centre midfield - still havent fully forgiven him for penalty v Romania, circa late 90s. Especially when we head to Croke he might be thinking its GAA time again . . .
But he's worth a spot in the squad but was this not the problem when he took an international break?
Heres my team v Germany
Super Shay
Stevie Finnan
O'Shea
Honey Monster (favourite player)
Harte
McGeady
Stephen Reid
Alan Quinn (most underrated palyer we have)
Duff
Robbie
Doyle
Bench men
Kenny
Carr
Morrison
Miller
Byrne
O'Brien
McCarthy
Delap
Kavanelli
"Jese we are short squad wise"
Must make set pieces count in this campaign.
Good luck all
Presume you mean the one vs TurkeyQuote:

He would be a good addition to the squad alright
Would mostly agree with your team but would have A O Brien instead of O Shea , A Reid instead of McGeady , Kavanagh instead of Quinn and Morrison ahead of Doyle
Why does everyone put Doyle adhead of Morrison? What has Clinton done wrong for us? For that matter why is Doyle ahread of Elliott?
Perhaps because many people think that Doyle is better than Morrison, and there is no place for sentimentality in international football.
Was about to slam you having Miller in the 11 that you think will start, but notice you have Andy Reid in your own 11. I would be amazed if anybody saw more usefulness in Miller than Andy. I agree completely that he should be palyed in the middle and have every confidence in his ability to be outstanding in that role, where as Miller belongs in Championship football at best and I might not even include himin hte squad.Quote:

Is A. Reid getting much (if any) playing time in the pre-season friendlies?
Roy Keane is retired and we need to get over it. There's no use in putting Carsley or O'Shea in there and hoping they'll be Keane-lite, they aren't going to be the box to box midfielder he was.
We should change our style of play to suit the midfielders we have now. I say go 4-4-1-1 Italian style formation (they like us, have loads of midfielders and full-backs, with little in the way of strikers).
--------------Given
O'Brien - O'Brien - Dunne - Finnan
McGeady - Kavanelli - S Reid - Duff
-------------Ireland--------------
-------------Keane----------
And give Robbie the nr. 9 jersey so he doesn't get any ideas in his head about being a playmaker.
I think if we play the passing game against the Dutch we can catch them out, because they have proven at the World Cup to be hoofers.
What about the German centre halves? 2 big féckers, Metzelder and Mertesacker ("7tft with inches to spare"). I don't think even Jason is over 6ft.tall. Does it change anything with how the game is approached?
stan was at the german games in the world cup , if he doesnt have a plan to deal with the german height then we are hosed. surely we will be looking to put balls in behind them or crosses that a player of lower stature can meet
Up against the 2 German centre halfs the best thing to do would probably be to play 2 pacy strikers. Morrison would just give Duffer the option of crossing it in when he'll be lucky to win a header.
dont think morrison is too bad in the air. 2 good headed goals in succesive games against cyrus and the swiss away in last campaignQuote:
