I seriously doubt if big Sam could even tell you who is on top of the league right now in fairness (with out doin' the research). The LOI now is ALOT different to when he was here.

I dunno about this. His current Bolton side would probably beat what he would have at his disposal in the Ireland squad. You mention 3 players, Kilbane, O'Shea and Morrison - Kilbane is a VERY average player, he just gets by and no more. O'Shea, a man on the books with Man U, he should be doin' ALOT better than he is. To describe him at the moment? Fcukin' WOEFUL. Morrison? Ah Morrison - our old nugget. Morrison is crap - all heart, and he'll bust his balls in a match but he just isn't good enough.[/QUOTE]

Troussier .. ffs big surprise that ..ffs .. who else Schaeffer Dave bassett? Roy Hodgson? We're like some third world country who thinks if we get some English or European manager in, he'll work some voodoo on the team. Kerr should have been another campaign .. Mc Carthy did a lot wrong (Roy Keane as sweeper, Irwin has to prove himself to me) before things began to go right for him.

But yet again Delaney / FAI get it wrong. The decision is right, but the justification is not.

Our drop in FIFA rankings should have nothing to do with the decision. If anything, our rankings during Kerr's reign were reasonably impressive. The key point is that too much attention was paid to these rankings at the expense of giving younger players & fresh ideas experience in friendlies.

I still think the best analysis of Kerr's reign came in the Tribune this weekend. "End of an era: McCarthy's Era".

All the same he worked very hard & has had his hard earned reputation badly damaged by a shabby media. It didn't work out but I hope the next manager has the same interest in our team's success & the same work ethic as Brian Kerr. I'm glad he's gone - there were no signs of any progess in his 3 years - and we can't risk another 3 years of the same. But, as always, you'd fear for the type of replacement they'll look for & how they'll make their decision.

I feel sorry for Brian, a good decent football man. Obviously not high profile enough to get the chances previous managers have got and that disappoints me. Yes he made mistakes but didn't every Irish manager ?
It was third time lucky for Mick, Brian deserved a shot.

Just heard Delaney on Morning Ireland with Des Cahill. Apparently they are going to 'head-'hunt' their canditate for new Ireland manager position instead of seeking applications. No $hit sherlock, no-one in their right mind would apply for this job.

Hate that Delaney muppet. Its time for Kerr to get vocal about the $hit he has had to put up with with the FAI.

Woeful substitutes. Taking off our 2 strikers when we needed to beat Switzerland. Against Israel at home replacing keane with a midfielder

Woeful tactics. Away games.

Woeful use of friendlies. Afraid to lose them and afraid to try out kids and younger players.

Disgraceful use of Eircom League players. Giving Jason Byrne and Crowe about 90 seconds between them while giving Macken a proper game.

Well it wouldnt surprise me - the Irish job isnt as attractive as it was a couple of years ago - I cant see many big names wanting it - reckon we'll be stuck like someone like laurie sanchez. No point in getting rid of Kerr is they dont get a better man for the job - lets hope they do

The big difference between Mick and Brian is that Mick took over an ageing team, brought in new players and made the team his own. Yes it took the third time of asking to qualify but in each campaign he got to the playoffs (and shouldve automatically qualified in one).

Unfortunately under Brian, no one can deny we have gone backwards. Kerr took over a team after a good WC, in a group that we were FIRST seeds. As far as I'm aware the only players of note to make their debut under Kerr was Andy Reid and McGeady. Despite the bad start to the first campaign it was a very realistic target in both campaigns to top the group, we didnt even get to the playoffs. When he took over we were first seeds, now we are fourth.

I think Brian is a smashing person and I'm not sure what options are available but the right decision was made last night. When this all blows over, Kerr should be re instated as head of youth development.

Kerr for the U/21 job, O' Neill to take us forward in the senior job. The pressure is on Delaney now, if he looks for some muppet like Troussier or Graham he'll have the fans calling for his head.

I think Kerr has a right to be disappointed, “declining FIFA rankings” is just an excuse. We were 14th when he took over and 14th just a couple of months ago prior to the defeats to Italy and France. The FIFA rankings are a load of cr@p anyway.

He couldnt have been expected to qualify for Euro 2004 so really he managed us for only one competition. It sounds like FAI haven’t anyone identified yet, sure we were terrible at times, but no manager cant be better than Kerr.

I agree about his reluctance to try new players though, very surprising considering his past. There are lots of good youngsters around the premiership who deserve a chance. Our squad always seemed so small and he seemed to prefer playing someone out of position than trying someone new.

Agree with virtually all your post. In my mind Andy O'Brien played better than I'd have expected him to play under Kerr, but I can think of no other player who Kerr seemingly got the best out of. Many notably underperformed on a consistent basis.

But regarding the seeding: as far as I can work out, if Mick had even got 2 points from the first two games in Euro 2004 qualifying we'd be a third seed. It's not fair to blame Kerr for falling all the way to 4th.

Listening to Brady & Giles on dunphy's show this morning. Anyone hear it?

It was the usual names being thrown about, Allardyce, Troussier etc. but they also discussed the possibility of Roy taking the job. Dunphy said he'd be mad to but Brady & Giles said he could do well......you can't substite UEFA badges for experience and Keano has plenty of that, he's learnt his football from two greats of the English game (Clough & Ferguson). He knows the game and what's is needed on the pitch, sure he does have the manager's job when he on the pitch.

I know he has no Management experience but he would't be the first to get an Intl. job eg Hughes for Wales and Beckenbauer for Germany.

What do you think?

I was a big supporter of Kerr when he got teh job and I am gutted that we did not quailfy and equally gutted for kerr that he was not as successful as he hoped to be. Footbal is a cruel game and managers are more often than not judged on results.

Kerrs results were not up to scratch for the players that he had at his disposal. Not one win against decent opposition over 8 matches.

I think I said it in a previous post that performances have been pretty dismal also. Any manager that only had one good performance in 18 competitive matches is going to be in trouble. I really that he woudl come good and i was supporting him right up to the end but as I said before. If we finished 3rd or 4th then he had to go. The medias behaviour is just a side show and should not be considred. Our results and performances in games is what he should be judge on and I think to be fair to the FAI, they did do that.

No major surprises last night... the only thing I wondered about was how long the meeting would take to tell us this. Kerr was a sitting duck after those two games against Israel.

To be honest I dont really care now that he is gone as long as we get a decent new manager. Kerr will find either a job with an Eircom LEague outfit or a tecnocrat job in UEFA. Plus the fella must be a millionaire by now so he will be alright.

Martin O Neill would be probably the best choice for the new job. I wouldnt like to see O Leary in the position because he hasnt proved himself with scant resources (in regards to the amount of poor players we have). The rest of them I wouldnt be too keen on, maybe that fella who managed japan and Quartar.

Just a small point, how would Brian Kerr be a millionaire.

I don't think most fans wanted him to go. I don't think he got a fair shot. The results weren't as good as they could have been, obviously, but he deserved another chance. Success doesn't always come instantly - ask Mick McCarthy.
