It was always going to be a difficult season but i'd have expected Fenn to organise things enough to stay safe. The Covid shutdown probably negatively effected Cork the most in that they needed an opportunity to improve as the season went on and if crowds held up at all then players could have come in in July. With the sprint of a season it is now there is no room at all to build. Dundalk draw one game and are under serious pressure to keep winning already. Buckley has shown his worth as a coach and seems to have been pragmatic in getting Sligo defensively solid, not something you'd associate with a Buckley side. The 'first' round of results have not helped Cork either with Waterford winning also. Harps showed that they have performances in them albeit Rovers probably stepped off the gas and Derry while sluggish and may struggle for goals too should have more than enough to press in to the top half. It's a really negative ever decreasing circle that Cork have found themselves in. I dont see a way out bar sticking with the coach and building with youth even if that does mean relegation initially!?
Its def advantage Rovers for now, 5 clear is a big lead but I suppose still 36 points on offer for Dundalk to chase them down, little room for any further slip ups mind.
Not that we are in great form, (friendlies were just ok) but I was looking at Rovers next 4, Derry (a) Pats (a), Shels (h), Bohs (h), 3 derbies on the trot, tough run there. Then again we have Bohs away on Friday.
Cork were very poor yesterday, on the bits I saw (about half the game), the huge worry for their fans was the expected 'throw the kitchen sink' at them in last 5 mins never even got going. On the line up there was only around 4 players I recognised, MF was barren, Buckley should have been kept, assume Morrisey was injured? Its some rapid decline, as even back to 2018 they ran us quite close.
I would give no better than 50/50 chance of avoiding auto relegation on current form / results.
0-0 H/T Pats vs Derry. Another LOI game with ridiculous frenetic pace with little or no composure on evidence from both sides in the final third
Pats v Derry been a very poor game. Tired legs out there on both sides.
Deserved 2-0 win in the end for Derry. Soft goals given away by Pats punished by Derry, think the good Dundalk performance took the legs off Pats tonight
Yeah can only echo the sentiments above, poor showing but it mostly looked like the players were knackered after the shift they put in the other day. Strange stuff from SOD to only make one change with that in mind.
Technical issues off the pitch and incompetence on it were Longford's lot tonight. Not one home win in the 7 games played in the 1st division since Friday's resumption. Cabo doing well to have a lead but this is going to be a closely fought league that'll be hard to call. We're no great shakes anyway.
Galway Utd were very lucky to get a draw against Athlone in Terryland tonight. Utd's first goal was one of the worst goalkeeping calamities I've ever seen!
Look it's only the first week lads, lots of mad **** happens when we start normally, never mind in the current mallarkey, as a Rovers man I think the upcoming Shels and Bohs matches could have a big say in the league, we all hate each other for 90 mins, but after the Harps match second half, we're no great shakes either so all to play for still IMO
Great 3 points last night, Pats is often a hard place for us to go to. Not seen the "Highlights" of the Sligo game with being away but will in a bit!
Deserved red card for Shels
1-0 Shels
Can just imagine the outcry if the foul had been by a harps player!
There been some good work undone and in a few days also picking up results that may not have been expected. Lets hope that trend follows for the top 2!! Derry looked so poor against Sligo and Pats so at it v Dundalk i'd never have thought Pats would lose by 2, fatigued or not. Though Sligo did sit back against Derry and didnt press high all game as Pats did in Oriel. Harps at home v 10 men for a lot of the game against a Shels side that lost to a bit of a cobbled together new side at Waterford and to lose - big opportunity to get more points on the board missed there. It was hardly due to the efforts in Tallaght that had them leggy? If Cork win this weekend well the relegation issue wont be so predictable. Harps need even a point in the retart phase smartly.
Depressing that from Harps, couldn't pass the ball 5 yards, high balls to players who have no hope of winning balls in the air, you'd have hardly known Shels had 10 men for most of it,a race to 9th between Harps and Cork by the looks of that......
Waterford's club doctor has resigned over the Covid cases at the club,strange..................
Conspiracy theory that Waterford didn't want to travel to Sligo and got a player to take symptoms.......asterix coming :D
Fake ...
