John Paul did good things, also bad things. Why does everyone here make a saint out of him ? He did very good things in world politics and for peace. He did very bad things with his out-of-this-world opinions on gays, abortion, euthanasia and contraceptives.Quote:

i'm back, as shae said, we'll never know the true facts, but as a young boy in the Hitler Youth, all the brainwashing and propaganda did not encourage him to join the Nazis, he deserted the German army. Seriously he looks like a nice guy.. a bit old at 78 but i dont think the Vatican wants another pope for 26 years..the Brazilian cardinal was a decent guy also and i would have liked to see him..but best of luck to our new pope..

I have a huge problem with people preaching against something completely normal as homosexuality. This was, amongst the other few things I named, the problem I had with John Paul II and this was also why I hoped in vein to see a more progressive pope in control this time.
And agree, a Nazi past cannot be erased by an excuse such as "I was brainwashed". Leslie Van Houten was brainwashed as well, and I don't see her walking around freely in LA... Maybe a bad comparison, but then I only mean that facts are facts.
Won't judge Ratzinger on it though. People make mistakes and if they correct them I won't keep on nagging about it. That's why we have Typp-ex, to wipe out previous errors and make a clean sheet again :) Everyone deserves a new chance without being judged on their past. Despite facts...
Again every young boy at that time in Germany was automatically signed up for Hitler youth.. There was nothing him or his parents could have done, it was the law, obey it or die
I'm pretty sure conscription to the Hitler youth was mandatory in 1940's Germany.
Ratzinger looks like he's dying already, poor chap.He wasn't the best candidate in my opinion, they should have gone for a more centralist figure.

IMO these are the main problems facing the catholic church and they need to become ,more liberal on some if not all of the above if they want to discontinue the current trend with preists and citzens leaving the catholic church. And start bringing people back to the church
