While i do agree with you, I dont think we'd get someone of the calibre of Trap. Also whos to say DOB would continue to trump up the cash for a lesser light of a manager?? We owe that guy alot in fairness. Without his cash, we def wouldnt have Trap.

''Lagos — The officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Thursday met with agent of Republic of Ireland's Italian-born manager, Giovanni Trapattoni, in Lagos after indicating interest in the Super Eagles job.
The Italian said during the week that he would travel down to Nigeria to be interviewed for the technical adviser job,
However, the NFF officials met the Italian's agent ahead of the interview scheduled to hold next week in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
An official of the Nigerian FA disclosed on the grounds of anonymity that NFF wanted to keep the meeting between it and Trapattoni's representative secret but the lead was blown open late Wednesday night.
The representative of the 70-year-old Italian had called the NFF during the week to confirm that he would be in Lagos on Thursday to discuss on behalf of his client.
However, the location of the meeting remained unknown.
We learnt that the NFF's meeting with Trapattoni's agent may lead to the conclusion of a deal for a new head coach for the Super Eagles ahead of the World Cup in South Africa.
We learnt that Nigeria may be asked to buys off the remainder of Trapattoni's contract with the Irish Football Association.
Our source also disclosed that for the NFF to have agreed to meet with Trapattoni's agent could lead to the Italian becoming the hot favourite for the job.
In a related development, Bayern Munich manager, Louis van Gaal, may have made a volte-face on the Super Eagles' job. The Dutchman, who is under pressure to
perform at Bayern Munich, could accept the invitation of travelling to Abuja for the interviewing billed to hold on February 26 and 27. But Trapattoni and van Gaal
would facethe likes of Bruno Metsu, Ratomir Djukovic and Englishman, Steven Taylor ( should have been Peter Taylor), for the job after Hassan Shehata pulled out.''

And, after Ireland failed to make it to South Africa after losing their play-off to France, Trapattoni's agent, Domenico Ricci, has now said he would welcome an approach.

See that really bothers me. I mean he had no hand in getting nigeria in and they have such a silly situation that it surprises me would even want that. But the fact is, he is not 100% into managing Ireland.
Despite the enormous salary they paid him and not making the World Cup, they want him back and its he that would want an offer from Nigeria. Or at least having his agent say what he said.
This is one problem about having an Italian manager who cares nothing about Ireland, its just a job. They cant find someone credible who loves the team as much as the players and fans?
I am not worried. He will stay with us. I also want to see this from a more credible source (Indo, Irish Times)
We could always go for Hiddink if he does leave............

Nigeria linked with Sven Goran Ericsson this morning. Makes sense, he's been released from Notts County, and is available for free. Actually, he's probably going to be linked with any high profile position over the next few months since he is available without having to pay compensation
I think the Nigeria role is paper talk, I don't see him going there - attractive as the prospect of "living in a free villa in Abuja" is... :S
Nigeria don't have a vast amount of talented players in the squad, Odemwinge apart there is a shortage of talent. They have a dodgy keeper and are easily restricted to a few chances (Zambia did this - taking them all the way to a shoot out in the CAN). They do not have an easy group (Argentina, South Korea, Greece) and could struggle - they only just scraped through world cup qualification a point ahead of Tunisia, although they will have a vast ex-pat support base in SA. If they dont reach the knock-out stages then they wont have any meaningfully competitive matches until the CAN in Jan 2012 - qualification for the CAN will be a breeze for any of the big teams in Africa.
I would have a degree of worry about him taking the Russian or Turkish national team jobs.

Good point. It's interesting that so many loyal Trappistas are the same people who dont want 2nd or 3rd G mercenaries sullying the sacred shirt.
The same news story above from allafrica doesnt even correctly list the names of the supposed candidates. I dont think we have much to fear.
If we have drawn a stinker of a qualifying group then perhaps Trap may have considered the move. As things stands the job is only half done. Am confident he will stay, the same guy only said a few months ago that he would like to lead us to the next WC in Brazil.
I think were in danger of casting aspersions with talk of him abandoning us, at this stage anyway. He's not made any direct comments yet, his agent might be messing around but Trap himself always seems like an honest man. I can see one of the reports says he is already in Lagos or Abuja talking to the NFA, but I wouldnt say that report is 100% reliable. I dont think Trap is a journeyman-one-tournament-special coach (like Bora Militinovic or Cesare Maldini for instance) and I would be suprised if he joined Nigeria for a lesser job - one that could involve a tenure of just 3 matches and one that, if it was longer than the world cup, would be out of the limelight and would involve a lot of travel. I think we are being a little disingenuous to Trap at this stage by assuming he's abandoned us, although I do agree all this recent interest in him is worrying.

Maybe Trap realizes that he is loved here and that in terms of following we are one of the best supported teams home and abroad - who else gets 60,000 to turn up for dead rubber games like Cyprus and Montenegro in previous campaigns. And pay exorbitant prices for the privilege - stating the bleedin obvious here, I know.
