For Paul to go to shams would definitley be a side step.
I doubt shams will have a budget that much bigger than ours.
He'd be starting from scratch all over again and without much time to prove himself to notorious impatient supporters. Their playing staff is mainly part time and is in no way on a par with the players we have. If we could somehow manage to get a budget similar to this years, we wouldn’t be far away. We’ll never have a better chance.

News of the World reporting today that Matthews is fav for Shams job because he is proven to work well on a small budget. But Cook, Rico and Doolin are also in the frame.

He'll stay if we get 4th;)

He's got no interest in Shams AFAIK:)

There will be better managerial posts available in EL when this season closes, plenty of them!

Managing a part-time club in Dublin has a helluva lot more potential than a part-time club in Sligo. The player pool would be much more massive. I wouldn't say going to Shams is a sidestep because of this.

The club will be probably part time but will still have a pool of full time pros, maybe even as many as ten. Managers like Sinclair, McStay and Sanchez have all operated like this. Maybe he wont stay but I doubt he will go to Shams which has no full timers and no training during the day.

From what I've heard they'll have at least five or six full time pros next season. They've already sold over 600 season tickets and estimate that they might sell 2000. Add to this the fact that they'll no longer be renting a ground, new sponsorship deals for the new ground and a general surge in attendance in the early days of the move and they'll be operating on a vastly improved budget next season.

I think it'll be an attractive proposition to most League of Ireland managers. I hope for Sligo's sake you do hang on to Cook because he seems to be an excellent manager. Don't forget he may also be tempted by likely vacancies at Cork, Drogheda and St Pat's.

I was speaking to a Shams fan I know on Saturday and he was saying that Shams are considering going full time next year.

I do have a feeling he will leave one way or another , I just hope that it doesn't get nasty as that would leave a bitter taste in everybody's mouths .

I think it would be good for Cook to stay another year, just for himself. Remember, this season is his first "proper" full year as a manager, so i think we will really see what Cook is made of next year IF he stays,Rovers will, most likely have a small budget next year, so lets see how himself and Gerry work with it, IF they both stay.

As said above they will be increasing their budget for obvious reasons, and i expect them to be in top 3 budgeted clubs next year. Behind Derry and Pats.
We will be cutting our budget big time next year. Lads I assure you just, because our Financial problems are over for now don't forget the budget must be slashed as we will just end up the exact same come next august. I have it from good source anyway the our budget is going to be well below the average in the league next year and thats why Cook will probably leave because he won't be able to take us any further.

Meanwhile, Cook said he would neither rule himself in or out of taking up the vacant manager’s spot at Shamrock Rovers following the departure of Pat Scully by mutual consent last week.

Last Friday, bookmaker William Hill had the Liverpudlian at 4-1 to succeed Scully, behind only former Hoops legend Damien Richardson.

“It is always nice to be linked to a job. It shows I must be doing my job right. But hopefully I see my future at Sligo.”

Cook said his focus would be on finishing the Premier Division campaign as well as possible and said he didn’t want speculation about his future to overshadow remaining fixures.

“I don’t want the headlines to be about Paul Cook,” the manager added.

He would not, however, rule himself out altogether of a move to Dublin. He hinted that it is a decision which is likely to be based on financial considerations.

I can't get my head around the thinking we need to slash the budget for next season. Yes things will be tighter sure, but i thought the whole idea was to finish the season close to debt free, which by all accounts we are on track or close to doing so, that would enable us then to push the boat out a little more than we are doing at the moment? Surely their can't be too many clubs in the position we are in at the moment?

I heard a figure what Cook was being offered tonight for first team wages for next season, and if that is true it is a disgrace. The current MC are very lucky that V Nally and a couple of others came in and organised them as we probably would not have a club only for them. I also heard that one or two of the lending members of the MC have an issue with Cook ! if so they are doing their best to drive him out.

I can't remember a good idea this MC have had for bringing in funds, very little ambition shown by them at times, although saying that they do work their socks off to be fair at things. Being in the ground 2 hours before kick off must be very difficult and a strain on all of them. However initiatives don't seem to be a strong point with them. Cutting the weekly wage Cook has to work with to a level that below even what Connor alledgely had in the first division sends out a message that they have an attitude of looking to make life as easy as possible for themelves by giving the manager a rediculously low budget and using the credit crunch and the rescission as an excuse for doing so.

What we need is some sort of membership drive or a sesonal membership that we can do every year and that gives you a season ticket, Free programme, entry into they yearly lotto Draw, entry into membership of the 400 club and a chance to purchase International tickets for €500.00 or €600.00 which can be paid installments. I am not a member myself so existing members may be cheesed off and i am not sure how it would work disolving their shares (if it could be done) or maybe would not have to be done. Maybe you could make it that only yearly members had a vote at the AGM. Something needs to be done because the current membership offering does not really entice people to part with their cash.

I think we need to come up with ideas fast if we are to keep Cook and will look forward to friday night to hearing what Cook says at the trust meeting. It would be great if there was a decent turnout for it on the night.

Supposedly he'll be at Harps next season though.
