Very often you'll find it's the candidates who leak that they've been approached. It helps keep them in the public eye and alerts other parties to their availability. In this instance though I reckon it was just that Fanning rang his agent and found out. Something simple and not necessarily leaked by the FAI.Quote:

Do they really underachieve though? They should definitely have landed Euro 2004 on home soil with no outstanding team present. Since then, though, their exits have been to teams which would definitely have been considered favourites against them...Quote:

They've generally had nice footballers but lacked a real goalscoring No.9... the likes of Postiga, Nuno Gomes and Pauleta were never really world class which made them quite limited against the best sides. Now that Ronaldo is filling that role and more, I'm not sure they have the quality of midfielders that they once had.
Very good read on King. Stating the obvious but I really hope the two games go well for him. Pity Brady isn't available seeing as he seems such a fan and a blow with Westwood also, just as he has got his club career back on track.

Martin O'Neill's record overall at Sunderland wasn't that great to be fair. It's been a while since he did anything decent and that was only by spending big at Villa or when he had John Robertson by his side.
Roy Keane still has the potential to be a good manager if he can learn to park his ego.
Apart from that the choices out there are slim enough.
There is no chance Hiddink would take the job. His annual salary at most of his recent jobs was +5 million. He'll also take one look at our pool of talent and say no thanks. Like a lot of managers, the guy isn't a fool. He isn't going to risk his reputation.Quote:

I didnt, but im not surprised Kerr said that. He is mates with Noel King after all so is bound to support the lad. Either way, I dont think criticism of King does an awful lot. It just shows that these were two games that the new manager really couldve used to experiment, with nothing to lose.Quote:

That makes sense to me, Gules comment on O'Neill that is. His name seems to pop up whenever a mid to lower level English team is mentioned. Frankly I would prefer if we took a gamble on a younger coach. Perhaps even a continental.
Whoever gets the job has the right to pick any players and style he wants and players in any position he wants.
To be honest we were always going to get hockeyed by the Germans no matter what players we played or in what position. It was a dead rubber game. Putting Doyle up front wouldn't have made a difference. Playing McClean who had a few good games for Sunderland a year ago but has done nothing since wouldnt have made a difference. He's the most left footed player ever. A professional footballer who can't pass, cross or shoot with their weaker foot shouldn't be on a national team.
To be fair we have a limited group of players who usually get shown up against the Germanys, Spains and Italys of this world. Damage limitation is always the best hope against these teams realistically. Its games against the likes of Austria and Sweden we need to worry about in future.
The Doc knows who the new manager is apparently..... Had always thought The Doc=St Ledger was just a bit of banter but he named Kelly and Delaney in the back four the day before the team was announced. Anyway he reckons the new manager is already in waiting and is supposed to be good.
So it's not a Noël King then? Or Nigel Pearson.

Well in fairness I can understand why it's tough to pick the team - King's like a kid in a sweet shop here, and he's suddenly got three of his best players back to add into the mix. With the aim of dominating the game and securing the win, he has plenty of options.
The 'huge threat' line is a bit of an eye-roll but still just standard manager-speak.
On YBIG, a few posters are saying it's Cruyff. A taxi driver mate of a mate said that there's a rumour that he arrived in Dublin airport last night. Probably bull****:rolleyes:
If there is truth in it, it could be the most inspired and revolutionary move the FAI would ever make, or a recipe for disaster with him walking out in frustration after a few months. Would be colourful at the very least.
