will Shay ever stop a peno? not today anyway
He saved a few when he was at City.
He saved that one in Cyprus a good while back, the only one he has saved for us I'd say. Saves a very small percentage at club level too. He really is terrible at them, makes it easy for the taker because he seems to go so early. He'd be better off not guessing at all and just follow the ball, couldn't be any worse anyway.
He saved one from Zola early in his Newcy career, though it might have been a friendly.
I've no confidence in Shay when it come to pennos. I'd say Mendietta still can't believe he scored.
If only Shay could manage to go the opposite way, his chances of making a save would greatly improve.
Not unlike the chances for your mental health in a relationship 'discussion', often depends on an act of extreme restraint, i.e. saying the opposite of what you were first inclined to respond with.
It's not so much going the wrong way that irks me, it's going the wrong way so early. By the time the kicker is addressing the ball 2/3 of the goal is open.
Shay is to appear on 'The Late Late Show' tonight.
Ah, so Irish footballers are actually in the Montrose psyche again. Bandwagoners.
Ah thank Christ. Checked in here thinking there was an injury.
I saw Noel gallagher on when I was at home for easter. cringeworthy too.
Tubridy "you're really irish aren't you?"
NG "nah, but very tuned in to my Irish roots, always came over for holidays, throwing stones at cows and stuff"
Tubridy "so, you're really Irish"
and so on in same sequence for 5 more minutes.
Totally and utterly cringeworthy.
He asked Stevie G about the Hillsborough disaster. When Gerrard replied by mentioning that they're are still a lot of people seeking justice Tubs was at a total loss..."what do you mean Steven, do they suspect something was a miss?".....not a direct quote but something along those lines. Gerrard wasn't expecting such utter ignorance to the situation and just said..."am yeah, it's been kind of well documented that there were a lot of failings that day"...again, not a direct quote.
I think I'll just flagellate myself instead this evening.
I thought Shay given was good last night on the Late Late Show. It was great to hear an Irish player speaking eloquently and confidently for a change.
Shay was great. He said some lovely things about how much it meant to himself and his family when he made his debut. Tubridy really is desperate though, bloody hell.
This is either a case of changing attitude or knowing his audience - as in maybe he'd be embarrassed to explicity state himself as Irish when talking to Irish people or at all.Quote:

Really enjoyed Shay too. He was open (speaking about his mother's death and how his father raised the family) and confident (speaking about our Euro chances) but he was very down to earth also.
Tubridy quizzed him regarding the chances of him staying on after the Euro's. He didn't rule it out and stated that he'd be sitting down with Trap after the Euro's. He seemed rather positive when Tubridy pushed him on it and when Tubridy suggested he'll stay on Given didn't rule it out, just brushed it off with a chuckle. I got the impression that if Trap relates to him that he needs him as number one and we've a cracking shot at making the World Cup, then Given will stay on.
He's a clown, he just goes with whichever team is going well at the moment. I remember back in 2010 he was doing all sorts of stuff for the FA in the run up to the World Cup, saying "we," and theres also the story of how he was going to charge the FAI half a million pounds to write a song for 2002 World Cup.

Not a word about Ireland here either

I think you're being a bit harsh. I'd say he's not near as 'bad' as some of our former players. Plus I didn't hear him say the 'we' word. From the links you posted there seems to be a bit of knowing his audience. Also, he is allowed to support both if he really felt like it.
On the song thing - he completely turned down writing one for England (a couple of times I believe), so there's that.
just a slight strain, won't play against Bosnia/Herzegovina: http://www.fai.ie/international/seni...te-may-22.html
QPR rumoured to be looking to sign him on BBC gossip.
No surprise there, Mark Hughes has a long history of working with the same players at different clubs

Excellent news.

I know the routine. Coat. Exit...
Don't bother taking your coat with you next time EG, it might make for a hastier exit :)
SSN are reporting that Shay was withdrawn tonight at half time because of a calf strain. However in a post match interview Dunne said it was prearranged. Wonder what the truth is? Westwood done well when he came on though.
According to the FAI, it was prearranged: https://twitter.com/FAIreland/status/209740553733148675

Given not injured. Not even precautionary. Westwood getting game time! #LiveFAI
They would say that though, wouldn't they?
Did Shay appear to get injured during the match?
I did not get that impression so I would assume it was more precautionary, I mean had I been manager
I would not personally see much point in Given playing the second half, the only thing that could be 'gained '
from that would be Shay picking up an injury. Shay had shown he can still do the business so better to give
Westwood a run out. From what I have seen of him in the past and from the second half, I have every confidence in
him, I would not now see it as a major blow if Given could not play, Westwood is more than capable of doing a good
job for us.

Shay is fine. Not because of this link per se but because it is all over that he is fine.
Some of you are worse than a sewing circle!
Get the backup some minutes, in case of injury, in the last friendly before a major tourney...makes PERFECT sense. Jesus.
If we ever had Shay go down, and Westie DIDNT play in a meaningless friendly (the third in what, ten days) you all would be screaming bloody murder.
This is probably complete bull****, but Shay is apparently a major doubt for Sunday:
