Will it be to a lower league?
Very conceivable it could be a championship club. Not sure what Premier League sides would take him on given he'll be 23 years old with 22 Premier League appearances made sporadically over the past 3 years. Perhaps one of the promoted sides would take him on. McDermott at Reading seems to like working with Irish players, although they have a war-chest this summer courtesy of new owners. All in all, my guess is he'll spend the first half (or 3 months) of the season on loan at a strong championship club.
I'd say Bruce will go back for him when he gets his next job, wherever it is....
Meyler completed 90 minutes for Sunderland today in a 1-0 loss to Seongnam in the Peace Cup in South Korea: http://www.safc.com/news/20120719/li...256213_2853565
John Egan was an unused substitute, and may see some gametime at the weekend in their remaining game
Great stuff. Hope this lad can stay injury free this year and get some game time under his belt. Only feels like yesterday there were many posts on here really hoping he got a shot in a friendly and seeing him as a real option for that combative/energetic midfielder to replace Whelan/Andrews/Green whoever at the time.
Now I think people are looking for perhaps a Gibson/McCarthy pairing (obviously not everyone) but it would be good to see if this lad can get back to knocking on the door for a squad place. I expect he has a fair bit of ground to recover before that is the case though.
I watched him about 4 times, and each time i thought he was really good. Aggressive, good getting forward, could pass the ball and also a good tackler, whether he has lost too much vital development time at this stage in his career only time will tell.
Let's hope if he is liked by O'neill that he is not knackered by Christmas.
I was talking to an Aston Villa fan the other week who pointed out that O'Neill is a great coach with one big flaw and that is that he's not into squad rotation.
He has his favourite 11 and gets them to run themselves into the ground with highly commited displays. Normally his teams do really well for the first half of the season and then fade away because he won't give any of his best 11 a break.
This was for sure the case in his last season at Villa and we saw it again after his great start with Sunderland but I'm not sure if he has been just at clubs with no strenght in depth where the difference in quality between his first 11 and the subs was so great that is was better to stick with them even if they were worn out.
Any Celtic fans with an opinion on this?
Fair point but I think you know where I'm coming from!!
On for the last 12 minutes.
He looked very good when he came on, putting a lot of pressure on the Arsenal defenders and forcing some sloppy passes. Also won the ball excellently on the edge of the box, and started off another attack that McClean squandered with a poor touch.
Excellent cameo from Meyler. Very comfortable on the ball and won an excellent free kick for his side. Great to see him back.
James McClean just posted this on twitter: https://twitter.com/JMcC_23/statuses/241855524650487808
no indication what the "call up" is for thoughQuote:

Meyler gets his call up to the Irish squad, well done, may it be the first of many.
Unfortunately not in the best of circumstances with Gibson withdrawing from the squad(post Euro blues).
Delighted for Meyler. This guy has had a lot of bad luck with injuries and seen teammates McClean and O'Shea heading off on Ireland duty. Still putting in more hours on Twitter than on the pitch, mind.
Great to see Meyler in, hope he keeps his place from now on. Seems like the kind of player Trap would like - big, strong, runs around a lot, harries and gets stuck in. Decent passer too, does the simple thing. Meyler + McCarthy would be a nicely balanced midfield, hope it happens against Oman.
I've always thought that once Meyler gets in the squad once, he'll be in every squad, injury permitting. Trap will be a huge fan.
David 'Mailer' just came on for Sunderland against Swansea, Cattermole off with a dead leg.
Let's hope he delivers.
