Probably. The crowds were always going to drop as the season went on, and especially as Euro 2008 kicked in. The former has happened every year we've done this thread; the latter happened in the 2006 World Cup. There is no panacea for football in Ireland; crowds under 2000 at Pat's and Drogheda despite recent successes in particular highlight this. We're not on the verge of average crowds of 4000 here. You can be disappointed about it I suppose, but it's the league we're in.
Eh? You were playing Cork.
I have 1100 in for that one; must have left it in there by mistake. Cheers.
There was another 75 to 100 in the stand I'd say.
Sadly this does seem to be the case. It's very frustrating, but it seems to me that crowds were higher ten years ago. You'd wonder what clubs have to do. It certainly gives the lie to the argument that it's about standards. The standard of play, and quality of players in the league has probably never been higher, yet crowds seem to be falling rather than rising.
I'd say that the increase in Premier League matches on Sky and Setanta could be playing a role. There is usually between 4-6 matches live every weekend now as opposed to maybe 1 in years gone by. They've also increased the showing of Championship, Coca Cola leagues and La Liga. Still, you would hope that there could be a role for both this and EL on a Friday.
The ONLY thing that could change the embarrassingly low attendances in this country is the (near miracle) of an Irish team qualifying for the Champions League groups stages. This can't be said enough. It's still an absurdity that Dublin dosen't have a team who can achieve this when you see cities like Eindhoven, Valencia, Prague (eg similarly sized, or even smaller, cities) regularly appearing in the latter stages. But it boils down to the lack of imagination and docile mindset of the typical Irish sports 'fan'. It's been said here a million times - the mindless 'barstooler' with his misplaced allegiances to teams in Britain is the one to blame.
Yes, but those cites you mention only have one or at the most two professinal football clubs where Dublin (similar population) has 6 semi-pro/pro clubs. In those European countries you mention the whole city supports one club but in Ireland there is a small population outside of Dublin and there is 6 clubs in the capital and also as you mentioned the rivalry of the English League, but I think that is just an excuse.
I've just wasted 30 mins counting the heads on the DVD of the highlights - I've counted 1988 - but I know I'm missing some - its hard to see those up the back of the Jodi - so maybe 100 more (?)
Either way you were closer to the actual figure than I was :o
(and the 'official' figure was way off)
Drogs Derry - 1,500
Horrible crowd on a horrible night in Finn Park last night, id say max there was 1200 and maybe that's being generous :o
Football fans are optimistic; a win would have seen Drogs right back in it (in their fans' eyes). One point off them and challenging for the UEFA Cup spots. It was really the last chance to save the season*, and as such arguably a bigger game than usual. Plus I assume Derry brought a decent crowd. Going by the figures here, that's their worst crowd of the season, which is very surprising.
* - watch as they win every game from here to the end now.
Update after last weekend. Clubs who give official figures are in bold.

Pat's v Bohs
Recent games missing -
Fingal v Kildare
Pat's v Bray
St. Petersburg home to Zenit, play in the Petrovsky stadium. It has a capacity of just over 21,000. Generally the matches didn't sell out. St.Petersburg has a population of over 4 million and Zenit are the only team in the city playing in the top tier of Russian football.
Face it, the EL with Ireland's population hasn't got a chance, unless they did something stupid like having franchises.
Today with Zenit's success and massive investment the crowds have flocked and they are building a 60,000 capacity stadium. So get some rich tycoons into the league and it will succeed.
Terrible crowd in Oriel last night (it was stupid having it clashing with the Euro 2008 semi) - only about 500-600.
dolers said the crowd for UCD -v- Monaghan was less than 100 cant be true can it:confused:
Somewhere between 120 and (being generous) 150.
Not surprising for a Cup replay against Monaghan on a Tuesday in the middle of the Euros.
Hmm, I'd thought a little more, but I suppose the wet seats and threat of rain had everyone under the roof.
I blame Monaghan. They only brought six fans. That's disgraceful. A club that small has no place in the league. They're holding the rest of us back. They should be kicked out forthwith.
Let's not forget that they beat us. The league could do without clubs who can beat us.
there was no match on tuesday that is a shocking crowd for any club.
A certain Armagh City fan beside me estimated 150.
I dunno if this has been done before but i've just worked out the percentage of people going to games here if we take these attendance figures as gospel. Lets say 30,000 people attend games and there are 4 million people in Ireland. Thats 0.75% of the country's population that actually attend games here
Surely that has to be one of, if not the, lowest in the western world?!
12 of my extended family are heading to the League Cup QFinal next Tuesday. Does that mean we can occupy the Home end???
992 at Tolka tonight.
About 800 at Finn park.
