Finished 13 Reasons Why. Thought it was very good, but it's a tough watch. The last four episodes are hard to get through. I see it's experiencing a backlash online for glamourising suicide. Having watched it, I'd say it glamourises suicide the same way Trainspotting glamourised heroin addiction.
Next up - either "Dear White People" or "The Get Down - Part Two"
This is a good interview with the Lady who has been in charge of HBO documentaries for 30 years. She looks great for 78 years old.

Anyone watch the new Fargo with Ewan McG yet? It's ok.
Just watched the first episode of the new ITV/TV3 show 'Fearless'. It's a 6 part show, each episode an hour in length. A bit of a balls to the wall thriller on a very much sort of glass floor subject.
Surrounds a solicitor known for dealing in lost causes, this time looking into the case of a man in jail for the past 14 years for raping and killing a 15 year old schoolgirl. Essentially, it's going to dig up government conspiracies, and a lot of crooked people within intelligence agencies inside and outside the UK.
Wasn't intending on watching it, just happened to come on the TV after watching a film, but ended up stuck watching it after ten minutes. Fantastic first episode and really looking forward to catching the rest.
Excellent cast too including Helen McCrory, John Bishop & Michael Gambon. Well worth a watch.
The ESPN 30/30 George Best is pretty good. Debuted last month.

Stumbled across it on netfix during the week, and watched all 6 episodes over a couple of days, powerful story of a young man who refused to plead guilty to a crime he was accused of and how he paid massively for this. If anyone thinks that the U.S.A. is the land of the free they need to watch this. Makes the Making a Murderer story seem tame

Got back into BoJack Horseman a few weeks back (I hated it the first time I watched it back in 2014). I'm absolutely blown away by it. Definitely one of the best TV shows I've seen in years. Dreading the impending end of season 4.
Anyone watch the RTÉ drama Acceptable Risk? Just finished it myself there. Thought it ended a little poorly and abruptly, but the story itself was quite good, and it's as enjoyable as anything produced in Ireland in quite some time.
Binge watched Stranger Things season two this week as well. Been waiting on it for the past few months more than a child waiting for Christmas. Slightly different angle to it this time, which is refreshing and keeps it interesting. Seen a lot of suggestions that it wasn't as good as the first season but I thought it matched it perfectly well. Didn't have the same 'wow factor' as before, simply because I think I was already expecting it to be great, where I had no expectations going into the first season. Couple of superb new characters and already I can't wait for a potential season 3.
I thought Stranger Things season 2 was excellent also. There was a couple of episodes where I was thinking they might be losing it but it recovered really well. I wouldn't be mad on them doing another season though, the first two have been exceptional and I'd be worried they'll ruin it.
Thought Acceptable Risk was a bit naff tbh, the story is quite interesting but some of the acting is dire! I haven't finished it yet because I can't motivate myself to watch it (not sure if that says more about the show or me).
Stranger Things 2 was excellent!

Though the part where 11 went off with 8 was a bit weird and unnecessary, didn't take away from the show but I found myself just wanting 11 to get back to Hawkins for the whole episode, I know it tied up a loose end with her mother but could have been done quicker. Also wasn't a fan of Billy as a character. Still an excellent season, looking forward to seeing what they do next season, but as mentioned above I hope they don't ruin it, according to Wiki they are definitely doing a 3rd season and want to end with either a 4th or 5th season, so looks like they've plenty left in the writing tank anyway.
Came across a show called "Dreamland" the other evening. It's about the goings-on in the Government semi-state "Nation Building Authority" in Australia. AIt was originally titled "Utopia" before landing on Netflix.
It's bloody fantastic. Some serious laugh out loud moments. Nat and Tony are 2 of the best and most relatable characters I have come across in years. Reminds me a bit of W1A

Yeah, it's brilliant! Watched it a couple of years back and thought it was one of the funniest things I'd seen in a long time. I think more than W1A, it reminded me of Twenty Twelve. The sheer helplessness on Tony's face in most episodes...

Which simply makes you a man of impeccable taste! Some of the cast of Dreamland/Utopia pop up in other Aussie comedies - Karsten is in The Strange Calls (weird and quirky) and Nat is in Laid (has it moments). Both on Netflix.
I watched some clips of Hollowmen the last day. Gonna follow up on Rob Sitch this weekend.
Interestingly they are involved in the Pacific Heat series which I find brutal.
Anyone watched Mindhunter? I loved it. Season 1 done in a week. About the early days of the Serial Killer section of the FBI in the 70s.
I'm not into wrestling but the Ric Flair 30 for 30 might be the best one ever. How is he still alive? Very funny and sad as well. He has to be the guy who is most like the 'character' he plays in the ring. I like when they are interviewing Sean Michaels and he says "Ric doesn't know who Richard Fliehr is." He really is the character and the character is him.

Watched 'The Sinner' over two days too and it's well done, Jessica Biel stars, not sure how well the plot would stand up if you start over thinking it but enjoyable none the less.
When I lived in Boulder I met a lot of people who went to High School with Jessica Biel. They all said the same thing, she was just as quiet and boring in non famous life as she seems to be in famous life, and she left the second they graduated and never came back.

I cannot bloody wait for this. Really hope it lives up to the first 2. First series is as good as you're likely to get with a TV show. excluding The Bridge (SWE-DEN) of course. :)

Finally caught up on Peaky Blinders this week. Great show. Really looking forward to seeing where the next series goes with it.
Currently watching World War II In Colour on Netflix.
Basically just a documentary series on the war, but all footage has been colourised and it's fantastic. Some footage is superb and it's a superb in-depth look at the war.
Yes, as a WW2 buff I love it. The colour brings it to life but if you really want a great WW2 series, the BBC's WORLD AT WAR which is from the 1970s is excellent with interviews with many of the participants who were of course alive only 20 years after the war, including Admiral Donitz with his almost caricature English speaking accent.Quote:

Two shows well worth anyone's time, both on the same universe, but running largely separately, The Boys and Gen V. The anti-superhero show. If you're familiar with the comic books, it's some of the best written material out there. Genuinely, The Boys is one of the most fun, but also most gory and disgusting shows I've ever watched and I am gutted I have to wait two years for the next season.

Never thought I'd find myself watching a documentary about Boyzone, much less recommending one, but here we are.
No Matter What is quite good. The four lads come across well, Mikey seems to have gone through the worst of them, but is in a good place now. Ronan gets a slight majority of screen time, but he also had a longer career than the others. Shane and Keith are enjoying themselves. Louis Walsh looks halfway between Podge (or Rodge) and the doll from the Saw movies, and does not come out of it at all well.
On the one hand, he's the same as every other music manager you've ever heard of, on the other, he had a duty of care to five lads in their late teens and early twenties, and he exploited them for all he could get. The scene with the paper where Stephen Gately had come out as gay was sickening. All Walsh cared about was that he was on the front page, not what he was going through at the time, and the reason he had to do the story in the first place.
Some remarkable self awareness from a Mirror reporter as well, realising how far the business had sunk when he was watching photographers and journalists trying to get anything no Gately's death, and reporting it without any fact checking.
Funnily enough, I watched the whole lot last night too. It's well put together. Louis Walsh definitely comes out the villain of the piece. His lack of empathy or care for what were essentially children when he first put them together is frightening. Maybe it's just me, but Ronan Keating comes across a bit false at times. A bit more self aware than Louis but not cut from very different cloth. Can see why Ronan and Mikey eventually just lost it with the other two lads being on one big jolly for the final tour. The expectation on touring groups to work all day every day seven days a week is just incredible. The more you watch documentaries like this, it's amazing most of them survive and manage to keep up any kind or relationships at all. Watched the Bon Jovi one last year and they were ready to kill each other after too many years on the road too (and a similarly driven front man who'd push and push for more).
Not sure if I can get that documentary over here but will check it out if i do.
On another note, my wife and I just finished the first season of Severance on AppleTV+. I had seen it as an option for a while and didnt think it would be my cup of tea at all based on the trailers etc but we dove in based on the recommendation of a colleague and it is fantastic. Really offbeat and strange - not offputtingly so - but the premise is clever, the storyline is compelling, the acting is sensational all round (Scott, Lower, Arquette, Turturro, Zach Cherry all phenomenal. Walken is in it too!) and an Irish girl (Aoife McArdle) directs most of the first season and does a great job. There's some barely disguised social commentary on "work" that lands well too. Starting the second season soon I'd say, hoping it stands up to the first. Highly recommend.
It's taken an age to make that second season. Hopefully because they were taking care rather than flailing around.
Finally got round to starting in to Dexter on Netflix. First season finished and it's a great show. Been on the list for a while but glad to have finally started it. Heard mixed reviews of later seasons but the start has been excellent
Seasons 1,2 and 4 are really good. The rest are mixed, but I think only the final season (which I haven't seen) is supposed to be a disaster.
Dexter Season 1 was some of he best TV I've ever seen. Mrs Grise and I started it years back and binged the last five episodes one after another in one night - the only thing as heart-thumping and addictive I can think of was Line of Duty.
More recent stuff... Blue Eye Samurai was outside the usual type of thing I'd watch but it turned out to be a good warm-up for Shogun and I'm looking forward to S2 (though less S2 of Shogun as it needs entirely original material). American Primeval was pretty good, but I've always had a thing for Westerns. Godless, a few years back on Netflix, was superb. Deadwood. Stone. Cold. Classic.
Mixed feelings about The Night Agent Season 2 and The Recruit - for the most part, the kind of programme you can watch while thinking about something else. In that vein, there seems to be more 'villain of the week' programmes coming out recently - Poker Face, High Potential (watchable, but samey) - where five years ago it was just the franchise stuff like Law and Order filling that space.
Didn't think The League of Gentlemen clip at the top would still lead the last page on the thread more than seven years on, but it is one of my all-time favourites - hence the signature.
I finished 1923 on Paramount plus in a few days. I really enjoyed it after not liking the previous season called 1883. They are both prequels of Yellowstone which I’ve never watched.
