Larne down 6 nil on aggregate to Ballkani is pretty terrible right?
Yeah, surprised by that one. Bit of an outlier in the nordy results
Hibs 6-0 up tonight and there'll likely be no letup after last week's embarrassment
Rovers at least playing with 11 men with Kenny gone off
KA score again, so that's 5-2 now
Pretty bad overall really, even allowing that Dundalk aren't the side they were
Losing home and away to that side really is brutal.
Ferencvaros sadly arent feeling nice enough to give Rovers a moral victory like they did last year.
Poor results indeed. I think they have just done their homework and stifled us tactically not that is a major task. Miss Benson in these types of games where he can drive the team forward and not just play across in front of their defensive setup and then to the flanks and cross. Too predictable and laboured. That they doubled up on O'Kane from the start shows where they saw risk and thats where the threat was regardless. Hoban not himself at all, must not really be fit unless there was some tactical change, less dropping deep in trying to chase the tie.
That is a heavy aggregate defeat for Rovers.
Spare a thought for the Swedish teams. Four ties this week(Hacken, Kalmar, Djurgarden & Hammarby) and they lost them all.
Hungary had 4/4 sides in this round and may only end up with Ferencvaros in the next round.
Dundalk... The 2016 vintage era seems very far away now. Wet paper bag defending, poor first touches, and a good 150 aimless crosses to nobody, over two legs against not the best team in Iceland. Hockeyed 5-2 on aggregate. Technically outclassed.
Damn for Rovers, they don’t even get to have a moral victory that they at least got last year.
Slightly surprisingly, we're still ranked 32nd after all that, though it's getting tighter. In fact there's three countries level in 32nd, of which Latvia have a team in the CL path of the Conference League, which should be easier to get points from.
Behind us, Finland have at least four games to come as HJK are in the CL Europa League path and probably favourites to reach at least the Conference League groups. Kosovo have a match against the Gibraltar champions next, Kazakhstan have three teams left (including Tobol against Derry, and Astana who have at least four matches left and should make the Conference League groups you'd imagine)
Even the Faroes have two teams left, one of which has four qualifying games and a group stage to come. Group stage gives a bonus point by itself and then carries double points.
We could be looking at finishing this season around 36th - which is where we finished last season too, but (and I think we've done this before) we dropped a bad year five years ago off our coefficient only to replace it with another bad year. That's on top of the questions being beaten out the door by sides from Iceland and Luxembourg raises
I don't know what to make of Derry's chances next week. Tobol were a bit lucky to beat Basel - who had two players sent off and conceded three goals in 15 mental minutes at home. But they got back level in Kazakhstan early enough yet Tobol not just held on but scored again to win it.
Derry v Shakhtor Soligorsk is the game that stands out - one where you thought Derry had a chance but they got stuffed instead. But hopefully they can set least get a home result
UCD v Derry postponed this week.
Another random LoI link - KÍ of the Faroes play Molde next. Sivert Gussias of KÍ is ex-Molde - scored for them against UCD in the Youth League in 2017. Leo Řstigĺrd (now Napoli) scored the other two. Erling Haaland scored in the shoot-out. Three others are playing top flight in Norway or Sweden. Neil Farrugia is the only player of note from the UCD team. Conor Kearns, Joe Manley, Mark Dignam also played.
Mad the difference in careers between two sides who needed penalties to separate them then.
The Ref may have considered it to be time-wasting, but according to a Crues supporter (didn't see it myself):
"He tapped the ball off the pitch as Tuffey [GK] was getting a ball from the ball boy on the other side of the penalty area.
Shocking call from the ref...... "
Apologies for hijacking this thread (Mods please move/delete if necessary), but to put the efforts of Irish clubs, North and South, into perspective, I enjoyed this post from a Crues fan on another forum.
"Undeniably our greatest ever European performance. Night soured by, to put it simply, an absolute moron of a referee but let's face it, it was already an extremely tall order when the draw was made and to go unbeaten against this team in 90 minutes home and away across 2 games and dominating them the way we did at Seaview is nothing short of incredible.
Let's just remember though just to put it into perspective, we are a wee side from the Shore Road that started out in a pub in Tiger's Bay in 1898 and used to get changed in a laundry room because it was the only warm place we could find in the winter. For the majority of our history we were playing on park pitches with barely a pot to **** in. We still have a big chunk of part timers, we have lads in the squad that spend their Saturday nights at the Harp Bar and surrounding areas, our arguably greatest ever player who scored tonight is a lad from the Andytown Road who runs a door and window fitting company in Newtownabbey with his dad. Not too long ago our away attendance was comprised of a couple of committee members and the odd dog. To this day we still hold the record of being on the end of the heaviest defeat in the history of European football (11-0).
Tonight we went toe to toe with the most successful team in one of the top 20 professional football leagues in Europe on their own patch, who have regularly played at the very highest level of the sport in the Champions League beating some of the most successful teams in club football on the way. On another day if the ball drops slightly differently on 1 or 2 occasions, we knock them out. I don't think it's fully appreciated even sometimes by our own selves just how far we've came as a club in recent years and we still aren't done yet going by showings like that. All of this done too without a sugar daddy like the IFA, Kenny Bruce or Ali Pour pumping us full of money, no handouts from anyone, no one but our own fans, working class people from the area, coming in to save us when we were on the brink of liquidation in 2005. It was all done on our own merit.
I cannot possibly be any prouder of anyone that wore a Crues badge in Norway tonight, every single one of them fans players coaches and manager alike."
Always good to see enthusiasm like that! :good:
Will Derry have to play the next round in Tallaght? Dan McDonnell suggesting that is the case on Twitter….
Slight favourites? But of revisionism there I think Oriel. We were outright favourites prior to the 1st leg. It was acknwoledged that it was a banana skin, no forgone conclusion, but that if we put in a good performance we should win. It wasnt a bad performance per se, but we did show some of the consistant short givings indentified during this season - inconsistency, tend not to perform when Hoban doesnt, and can be sloppy defensively. Boyle has blown hot and cold all year. It was notable that the 2 signings in were dependant on how the result of the first round went, for that alone there is an element of success. The squad will buoyed by the signings and help with the domestic target of European qialificiation again. We still are in the midst of a squad rebuilding phase, which we tend to forget at times also.
I wonder why Irish teams (both club and national) tend to lob in crosses instead of sending them in at pace? And goals scored by passing up through the middle seem to be a rarity - though not for KA. Their strategy over the two legs reminded me of Muhammed Ali's 'rope-a-dope': let the opponent huff and puff for a while, then come off the ropes (i.e. out of your defensive third of the pitch) and biff them!
A shambles for Derry City council to have opened a shiny new stadium that they can't even use now. Should be a kick up the arse for them. They'll hardly get 2,000 attendance in Tallaght at best.
Their good supporters to travel, I reckon they'll double that.
What are people's thoughts on the Kazakh crowd, beatable?
If we are well beaten in Kazakhstan, it'll be a low crowd. Thursday night, in South Dublin is an absolute pain.
Far too progressive for our club, but we should be playing this match in Windsor.
Reason for the change is that we need 4.5k seats in the Brandywell, we only have 3.7k. With the new safe standing terrace going in over the winter, it won't be an issue in the future.
Very enjoyable trip to Kuopio. Strange town, it's a grid and quite compact. Lovely setting, surrounded by lakes and endless trees. Winters are brutal according to the locals, who were lovely and much more chatty than Helsinki people. Pint prices varied widely, but we settled in one spot doing litre steins for €9.20; cheaper than back home.
Some scenes at Derry airport at half 1 in the morning after the team landed. https://fb.watch/mc_vIL-7W2/
Kazakhstan isn't so much of a nightmare logistically as it is cost-wise. Initial quotes for a charter seemed to be €300k plus. Though UEFA give an extra €20k for such distances, generous. Only know of one fan going so far, living in Moscow.
There was an interesting piece in the sun on that Derry game. Club coefficient was huge in thef finnish clubs favour! Some coup for Derry City delighted for them. Think momentum in the league is in their favour at long last!
If you look through the draw for the non champions path, it is one of the better draws compared to other sides they could have gotten. It won’t be easy at all but they will have a chance I think, especially if they perform like they did against KuPS. The win over Basel was definitely Tobol’s biggest win in Europe and they had a large slice of luck in the 1st leg playing against 9 men. Time for one of our sides to win one of these 3rd round ties to get into the PO Round.
It's safe standing, which should be allowed. If not, seats can be put in.
Outside broadcast and the like can be satisfied, somehow. The requirement for 30 media desks is challenging, but can be done. VIP area would require a marquee, as space needed for the press.
Parking is fine, loads of spaces at the Brandywell.
The floodlights aren't up to the required lux, but many grounds of top teams aren't, and there's a way around it.
Category 4 is a different story again.
Mind you, there seems to be all sorts of relaxations of requirements you can get. So essentially the only problem for this Tobol match was the seating.
Changes are coming on this front from next season onwards, which is will make things easier for smaller clubs, so good news there.
KA not impressed with Oriel - a pigsty with an awful pitch apparently.
They probably have a point too.
