In all fairness to Dundalk and their European performance, they were put out by two deflected goals against a side that just learned their Champions League group stage opponents the other day. Dundalk looked no worse than BATE over two games and only for a bit of luck could well have beaten them. Were they to have sneaked past BATE, there was a great chance of a CL group stage for an Irish club for the first time ever. They were simply unlucky.Quote:

You are basing your opinion on our 3 games v Bohs, when we were not at our best, losing one (deservingly so) but winning another 3-0 (albeit we were flattered that night) and coming back from 2-1 down to equalize in the 93rd min.
You can only beat what is put in front of you and Dundalk are smashing most teams put in front of them.
Also saw them in Tallaght and the disappointing home leg v Bate. They are still head and shoulders above any other team in the league on a consistent basis, the only matter for debate is whether they are that good or whether every other team is so mediocre. Mostly the latter in my opinion.Quote:

Every generation gives off its heroes. For younger Dundalk fans it's the current crop as we spent so long in the doldrums they never experienced apart from last years side.
It's impossible to compare different eras as the game has totally evolved. People like to think that the present players wouldn't be able to cut it in a physical game of the 70s 80s but those players could they cut it in our era. Obviously the best would be able to adapt but overall it's like comparing apples to orange's.
Considering this fixture it was a good turnout to be fair, Monday nite, re-arranged, schools back, I think the club will be quietly happy to break the 2,000 barrier. :oQuote:

Not unlike Rovers last season for us in September/October almost back to back in all competitions. At least assuming a draw in the Brandywell that the other games are at home.
One of our best crowds of the season was on a Monday re-fixture v St Pats. Tonights game has that 'buzz' about the town that you'd know there was a big game on in Oriel, it wouldnt surprise me if it get close to the 4000 mark. Schools reopening etc would be an issue by the evening!

While I agree with Dundalk, I do think the European games show how good or bad our league is. Fact is we are about 41 out of 52 nations in the UEFA listings. And it shows really tbhQuote:

I dont think that is entirely fair. Rovers are rebuilding and this is the first full season under Fenlon, they have quality but needs to be tactically adjusted to Fenlons ideas regardless on whether it will be easy on the eye or not. Bohs are a good side with a limited budget that Long has made the most of, again they will continue to improve even more than Rovers imo. Cork are held back by the managers philosophy (couldnt resist) but are a resilient bunch and nobody enjoys playing them. Pats is a strange one as they have declined both with a manager who actually has tactical nuance to change things when needed. They were on a fine run until Dundalk and Cork beat them well so confidence is low but they still have enough quality to cause a few upsets during the remainder of the season and then to build in future.Quote:

Fenlon said as much when he was interviewed after the game in Oriel the other night. Third place is as good as second, its all about qualifying for Europe ( and the Leinster Cup)

Fenlon sticks to a very rigid system, that can be tough to watch at times, Cork too.
Pats are very brittle, nice to watch at times, but not solid enough.

First and foremost I gauge the standard of players and team by simply watching games. European results have often been influenced by an inferiority issue and by the time the players realise that they are in the game its often too late. There may be some change after Dundalk's and UCD's more positive tactics rather than damage limitation tactics in the past.Quote:

I have seen a lot of football in the south east of England-Conference South to Premier League so Conference South Chelmsford, League clubs Southend, Colchester, Brentford, Barnet and Orient. In between QPR, Fulham and Watford(my english club). Then the biggers clubs - Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, Manchester United. I hope to get to the Olympic Stadium next season. Dundalk in my layman's opinion would be a consistent League 2 looking to being promoted.
Watching most Conference games has you wanting to leave after 5 minutes! Some of our MDL or even Summer League sides could cut it at the regional Conference divisions.. (at this stage ive forgotten the point I wanted to make ha!)
