Probably usual protocol and Wilson did his quad in while attempting to answer Trap's text. Physios confirmed his expected recovery would be just in time for whenever Stokes next game is.
Either way if Trap has doubts about Foley accepting a call up then its fair to say his Irish career is over.
Limped off injured in the US according to the Examiner today. Hopefully nothing to keep him out of the Serbia game.
Poor lads chronic midweekitus strikes again with a virus this time. Cue him playing 90 minutes next weekend and everyone telling me I'm paranoid again.
In fairness to Wilson, there seems to be a few coming down with 'midweekitus'. It must be going around...
Apparently Pilkington was suppose to be called up as a replacement for Hoolahan, but he's come down with something too...
Having this friendly date is ridiculous. Players generally don't seem to want to play in it and the matches tend to be dire. The friendly against Croatia last year was terrible and I don't recall the previous one against Argentina being much better. I remember getting trounced by Australia and the Netherlands during this date a few years back as well. The only matches I recall being even decent for this date were Denmark (4-0) and Italy (1-2, with Reid scoring, though even that was kind of boring as I recall). If anything they should move this date to December or January and we could play somewhere tropical maybe (which would definitely make players want to go), though even that might be pointless as there is one in February and often times there are no competitive matches between October (occasionally November) and March.
It does tend to create more problems and questions than it answers each year alright, but this is Wilson practically goading Trap if he plays for Stoke on Sat. Trap is not strong at present, and he needs these guys but they don't seem inclined to rally for him. Chickens to roost maybe.
It's an international date. You can't blame the FAI/Trap for arranging a game, it's a chance to look at some fringe players for the WCQ.
Funny you see it that way. The Euros weakened Trappatoni in the dressing room, not to the point where he is facing a full scale player revolt, but certainly where he no longer has the respect of several players, some in the squad, others not selected. I have a vague notion that some of the players now crying off injured are looking at Trap as if he has 3-4 games left as manager, and are trying to avoid the collateral damage of being associated with him.
Yes, I meant for FIFA, because its not just Ireland who doesn't seem to get much out of this date as most of the friendlies follow the same paradigm. For Ireland, I do agree it could be a chance for some of the fringe players, but then again Trap rarely uses them anyway. I'm betting on either a 0-0 or a 1-0 (either way) borefest of a match.
I'll be really ****ed if the likes of Gibson, Hoolahan and Wilson play in the PL on the wkd. These are the lads who should be using these games to force their way in the squad and starting XI.
But why? Forget about how we as supporters view playing for Ireland. It would be a dream come true for most. But take the three players you just mentioned. Gibson is probably the only one who is guaranteed game time with his club. Hoolahan has a new manager and is fighting for his place, Wilson has seen Stoke sign a left full so he isn't guaranteed a game either.
All three of them have been fcuked around by Trap over the last year or so. Maybe in Wilson's case it was his own fault. So, why would any of them risk playing a friendly where they may get injured and then lose out completely at club level?
Also, look at the way Trap has operated over the last few years with friendlies. These guys may be called up, but there is absolutely no guarantee that they will get game time to stake any claim.
I'm not defending them, I'm just saying look at it objectively. Also, Gibson went off injured last week. He may be nearly fit, doesn't mean Everton would be willing to allow him risk more serious injury. Hoolahan has a virus. Should pass in a couple of days so he will more than likely be fit for the weekend.
Who gives a toss about these meaningless friendlies, if it really was about blooding new players then we'd be playing behind closed doors training matches against League 2 opposition and not countries like Oman. Money and greed are destroying football. Making any supporters pay any amount of money to watch this tripe is outrageous. There's no way these matches will be sold out, and for good reason.
Colbert what happened to Canada? Only one gold medal? Azerbaijan doubled you guys up.
Disgraceful.
And with no NHL this year, you are in for a long winter.
I'm not Canadian, I don't care about the NHL, though you are dead wrong to think for a moment that there will be a lockout. Canada only winning one gold medal was hilarious, I had money one the Americans winning the semi-final of the women's football so you can imagine my reaction when Canada lost! Never met a country so full of whiners and a people with such an inferiority complex for the United States.
You do a fair bit of your own whining, CR :)
