How can a sub be dropped from the first 11 when he hadn't yet made the starting 11.
Has a fit and available Duff been dropped since he nailed his place?

No... I don't get your point though? The dude asked was Duff ever dropped by Mick and he was... Wasn't a slight on him. More a comment on his position in relation to Kennedy and Delap at the time and the subsequent change in fortunes???
Unless we're getting bogged down on the difference between "Dropped" and "Not Starting"..... Jebus, More Agro.... If anyone wants me I'll be on the Robbie Keane thread rowing with Morbo and East Terracer.
My point is simple Doc, afaia Duff hasn't been dropped since he started in the first 11, against Andorra?
As I said, before that he was used as a sub.
does anyone know how long duff is out for? he hasnt played in newcastles past 2 games
Calf injury apparently. Hope he's back to near full fitness by the 28th. Has been getting back to decent form for Ireland recently

coach Chris Hughton told nufcTV on Tuesday morning that the next league game, which is the all important game at Hull City on March 14 is now the target for the Irish winger.
Yeah, same on physioroom.comQuote:

Looking at the PL table there is now a distinct possibility that Duffer may be playing championship football next season. Every year there is always one team dragged into the bottom three near the very end of the season (reading, sheff utd etc) and i think newcastle could be in trouble.
Given Duff's wages and injury record its not likely a premier league club would snap him up either.
Whilst Given certainly left Newcastle at the right time, (he should left years ago imo), I just can't see the club being relegated. In any case - if such an event were to airse, Duff would definately be bought by a Premier League club.
If Newcastle were relegated, I can see him agreeing to a massive wage cut in order to on with a promoted team like Birmingham or Reading.
I'd love to see him at Reading! They are going to be great next season in the Premiership.
I see now that he is a very very valuable part of our potential but looking back on it club wise, did you guys not think he would have had a better career?
I mean, injuries not with standing, he just seemed so destined for greatness to me at the World Cup.
This is silly, but a few months back, I went to Nevada Smiths (Which I never ever do wayyy to touristy) to watch Chelsea in the Champs league. Who walks in but Roman Abramonivich (hope I spelled that right) and some Russian model. I had no clue who he was at first and dont particularly care. But, he was a nice guy, ordering drinks for people, and I got a nice conversation in at halftime with him. I asked him about Duff, and he said, after a quick hesitation "Yeah, he just...what you see with him, you just think you will get more in the end." I said more goals? He said "Yes, more goals."
And thats the great conversation about Duff from one of the worlds richer men, and me, one of the worlds not richest men. Ha. Its true though.
I kind of agreed. People on here have said I am foolish as he is a set up guy but come on. He's always running around almost scoring or setting one up. Almost. I like him of course I just......I thought he would really go don as a great player. Maybe it's me. I admit of course, I certainly dont watch as much as you all.
Reading isn't going to happen. And I wouldn't want it to. We've got two left wingers there in Hunt and Tabb- I'd rather him go somewhere else.
Not a Coppell style buy either- Duff will hardly be value for money.
As for Reading being great next season in the Premiership, I'm not so sure. They can score tonnes of goals but are as shaky as ever at the back.
Unless a couple of high calibre defensive upgrades are made in the summer, I can see them struggling in the big time.
That is IF they get promoted. For me, Birmingham and Wolves are pretty ordinary sides and they are not proving themselves to be better than those two so far.
I like Coppell and the Irish contingent at Reading, but they will be hard pressed to get promoted, and if they do it they'll have a fight on their hands to stay up.
In my view Reading have taken steps back from their first promotion, losing key figures such as Shorey, Kitson, and most vitally, Sidwell.
People may argue that Noel Hunt has proven an able replacement for Kitson, and that would be hard to argue, but Sidwell and Shorey have not been replaced by better players.
I see you're trying the same topic again so I feel like I have to respond (again!). Don't put yourself down - I reckon you've probably seen as many games as Abramovich, if not the rest of us.
Rather than asking Abramovich I think Ranieri or Mourinho are the people who can best answer this question. Both managers had great praise for Duff's contribution to Chelsea under both of their reigns. From 2001-2005 he was a first choice at both Blackburn and then Chelsea and was one of the Blues' best players when they won their first league title in a very long time. He performed just as well as Lampard, Terry and better than many other 'galacticos'. Chelsea played a pretty atractive style of football with two wide players which they haven't lived up to in the last 4 years.
Unfortunately Damien got injured at a time when Chelsea changed their formation and Mourinho wasn't able to offer him a consistent place from then on. He chose to leave for first team football although Jose said he would have preferred him to stay. At Newcastle he missed the best part of two full seasons through injury but this year he's showing some of his old form (but a series of injuries has perhaps cost him a yard of pace).
I still don't think that you will find many Ireland fans who will agree with you about unfulfilled potential. Injuries haven't helped but for 7 years he's been an automatic choice and I don't think anyone here would argue that he isn't one of our Top-4 players (along with Shay, Dunne and Robbie Keane).

It is telling that his most cherished games under Ranieri
were the home match against Newcastle and away to Lazio. "That was two
games on the bounce. It was the first time that Claudio kept the same team
all season. They were enjoyable, but there were also lots of others."
Duff was brilliant in those two matches, in which Chelsea scored nine
goals. In Rome, in particular, he was almost unplayable. Indeed, he was
brilliant for most of the first half of last season. When he played,
Chelsea played, and they scored at the same pace as Arsenal. In a team of
stars, opposition managers identified Duff as the danger - "We have to keep
him quiet," said Arsène Wenger.
"And then my shoulder gave way," Duff says, picking up the story, "and that
hampered me for the rest of the season, and the start of this. So that has
been a nightmare." The injury happened on 20 December and was followed by a
tear on his Achilles tendon - and then another fall on his shoulder. Still,
it was not until April that Thierry Henry, regarded as the most effective
goal-provider in the Premiership, as well as its top-scorer, overtook his
total of 15 assists.
Lauren of Arsenal said a few years ago that Giggs and Duff were the 2 toughest opponents he's ever faced. Stuart Parnaby said:
"I'd say Duff is just about the most difficult out-and-out winger you can face in the League. He's that good. It was tough out there."
Drogba called him "one hell of a footballer". Ranieri said that signing Robben would be like having 2 Damien Duff's. Duff was actually better than Robben during their outstanding period together imo.
Since '05 Duff has been a different player (at club level anyway) but before that he was world class and certainly one of the best wingers in the world.
Has he got much left on his contract at Newcastle?? I wouldn't say it's enough to maintain an inflated transfer fee. Wages would be the only reason Duff couldn't move on should they ever be relegated so, injuries aside, he has some measure of control over the rest of his career...
According to this article, he has another two and a bit years left on his deal.

Sorry I forgot I brought this up already. apparently on friday nights I drink more beer than sinead occonors baby daddies.
One thing though to the above poster who is supporting the arguement that Duff is good by saying how hard he is to play against i mean then why isnt he reponsible for more goals. You know what the award for playing hard is called? The who cares award. Or in the NHL the Lady Bing Trophy.
I do think he is good but i would feel no happiness if we lose to Italy 2-0 and Duffer played well tried hard and ALMOST set up a few goals.......
