Sad confirmation that we haven't got beyond the problems of Trap's system. Recent run of form means nothing now and we were shown up by a similar level team. We're set up to defend, and don't play like the home side. The limitations of the centre mids are very much laid bare under this system. We might do ok in Russia, but ultimately we'll fall short of qualifying. Bit depressing really, as we had seen signs of progress.
Right I'm probably going to get slammed for this but bear in mind where I'm from and where a certain high profile member of the FAI is from and I've just got a text from a very reliable source that if we fail to qualify for the Euros that a certain recent ex unemployed Liverpool manager is being lined up as a replacement. I'll put it this way that same source tipped me off about Trapattoni before he was appointed.
As I said I'll probably get slammed for this but I wouldn't be putting my head on the block if I didnt trust this contact.
Well at least benitwz can't sell our best players...but he will want rid of given...
Benitez only recently said he wasn't interested at the moment in international management
Depressing and frustrating. Hunt should have been on long before the last five minutes. McGeady unable to do much but he clearly wasn't match sharp. Why Trap stuck with him for so long, I don't know. As someone pointed out, Hunt got more crosses in in about 3 or 4 minutes than McGeady did throughout the whole game. And dangerous, well-placed ones too from which we should have scored.
Whelan and Andrews non-existent again. It really is a big problem. Slovakia had 80% of possession for a spell of about five or ten minutes before half-time and had already been all over us since long before that. St. Ledger and Dunne at the back the only positives really, but that's not worth a huge deal when we can't retain possession or create opportunities, or at least put the finishing touches to the precious few we can muster. St. Ledger will be missed in Moscow. Will O'Shea come into the centre or will O'Dea slot in? Duff worked tirelessly as ever but it was frustrating. O'Shea was poor. Ward looked OK. Doyle had a very poor game as well but was working off scraps. Robbie wasn't great either and his missed chance was a shocker. Clearly took his eyes off the ball fearing a knock from the keeper. Disappointing. If we'd lost, I don't think anyone could have had any complaints. Trap saying something about it having been balanced in the first-half, although also mentioned Slovakia being superior physically, and us deserving to score in the second half. Also asserting that McGeady was very dangerous and that we should have had a penalty. I agree with the latter point, but not sure about the others. We have to win in Moscow now. Nothing else will suffice.
Just one thing though; who the **** boos the team? Jesus. :dazed:
Is it all conceivable that these players are told to stand around and not show for the ball? There's isn't one of them that would get away that or try to get away with it at club level. Getting quite cross now....going out to throw some fruit at a tree. Doyle and McGeady clearly not fit.
Nope, seemingly he's not interested in managing any club other than Liverpool and he's ready for international management. I dont know if he's the man for the job but it's not beyond the realms of possibility that replacements are being lined up should we fail to qualify.
Am I on drugs or correct that if we beat Russia we'll be on top of the group on goal difference and in pole position to win the group?
Everybody could see McGeady didn't have the legs in him for the second half, yet is took over 80 mins for Trap to respond, very disappointing. Andrews, well, he was just woeful. Couldn't do the simplest of things right. On the plus side, Duff seems to still be in form and St Ledger was immense (we will miss him next week).
Did anybody else think Given's distribution was poor? Maybe there just wasn't enough options for him, it's hard to tell, but giving the ball away so easily in Russia next week will lead to a lot more trouble for us.
On the positive side, we seemed to have more stamina than them and controlled the game for the last 10 minutes.
At least if we finish level on points with just Slovakia, we'll be ranked ahead of them due to our away goal out there.
Hungary beat Sweden, who I thought might take the automatic qualification spot for best runner-up, although I dunno what chance we have of taking that now either after our own result. Will have to have a more in-depth look at the permutations.
What is the deciding factors if all 3 teams are level on points as would happen if results pan out as below
Apologies if this has been covered below but working at the moment so no time to run through all the threads

I'd say the Slovaks were all over us, running all over the place and marking our players out of the game.
That's why we struggled to make passes, nobody to pass to. Slovakia are ranked above us and it looked like it.
We may have controlled the last 10 minutes because they had settled for a draw. They are a decent side when they
want to be, they showed that when they went to Russia and beat them.
That is the one ray of hope we have.
The second one is that we will get 3 points from Andorra.
The third is that Slovakia could drop points in all their remaining games.
