What are the three fiercest animals known to man?
Lioness, Tigress and SOUNESS :D
did anyone else happen to notice two names on the bbc link mentioned nowhere else but here......foppe de haan and roy hodgson.
this website' influence is growing....
Foppe de Haan please. Dutch u21's were quality. If he had us playing football like that....christ I'm getting a bit ahead of myself :D
Steve Coppell actually said in an interview, part of which was shown on the rte 2 late news tonight, that he wouldn't mind the job and could deal quite easily with the 8-10 games a year. reading would have great difficulty replacing him with someone who would get the same results, but i don't think many on here would mind.
How come Coppell is talking so openly about another job?
Coppell would be my first choice, gets the most out of average players and seems to have a good affinity with the Irish players, Beenhakker would be my 2nd choice, Souness last
According to the radio this morning Kinnear and Kerr
are putting their hats into the ring!!
Can we please stop all this nonsense talk about Houllier. He's a coward who takes no responsibilty for the teams performance when it goes wrong and says it was all his doing when theyre successful. He set Liverpool back years by adopting the most negative tactics possible and he actually tried to claim the Champs League success in 05 was down to him - what a waster.
Ya he managed internationally - couldn't get an unbelievably talented French side to the 94 world cup and blamed it all on Ginola - what a record.
He's an absolute bottler under pressure - they only needed 1 point from their last 2 games to qualify in 94 and there were numerous times when lpool were on the verge of a great victory that he somehow managed to turn things around to the oppositions favour
He got Panathanaikos to the Champions League QF. Here's his management career path: http://wiki.phantis.com/index.php/Angelos_Anastasiadis
The rain falls down on last year's man,
that's a jew's harp on the table,
that's a crayon in his hand.
And the corners of the blueprint are ruined since they rolled
far past the stems of thumbtacks
that still throw shadows on the wood.
Odds for the Nationality of Next Ireland manager with paddy power:
Irish - 8/11
Non Irish - evens
To be honest the only Irish manager with a realistic chance of getting it is O'Leary. I really there's tremendous value in that non Irish bet.
Even as a saver bet, I agree. You'd be having (at least) a free bet on O'Leary IMO
I did too... But I think something has set in with the squad that he won't be able to shake them out of. The players are indifferent. Indifferent to the fans, indifferent to defeat, indifferent to the media.
I didn't see the Late late show interview with Robbie but I don't care what pedigree they are, if players feel like that I'd rather have a team of Championship players running there socks off than Mid teir premiership playing moaners sidestepping accountability.
I blame the premiership. It's has lowered the bar for players. All of a sudden 5th place is a good season. They've carried that with them to international football where opposition players in there respective leagues have higher standards if not pedigree.
Sounnes is a winner. Sounnes on a two year contract....
Theres a world of difference between being a winner on the pitch and a winner off the pitch. Souness has fcuked up time and time again as a manager, do you really want someone like that managing our country? And before you say 'well he'd be better than Stan', think about it. Souness is one of the worst names thats in the running at this stage.
People who have voted for 'other' on the poll, who do you have in mind?
Anyone in favour of Ron Atkinson should read "Big Ron Show" chapter in Gordon Strachan's book. Strachan said he had a huge influence on him, he's a great guy and all that but he's certainly not someone we should be looking at.
It is well known that Ron's approach to coaching is rather laid back. He does not have a lot of time for basic technical work on the training ground, the numerous drills to improve the fitness, organisation and shape of the team. He much prefers to play practice matches, especially when he can take part in them. There is an element of the Walter Mitty in all of us in these training games, but that is particularly true of Ron. The games in which he was involved in tended to be a bit like the TV programme Stars in Their Eyes, with Ron attempting to impersonate someone like Franz Beckenbauer, Pelé or Maradona and inviting his players to guess his identity.
...
I must admit that his training approach occasionally led to some irritation and frustration for me. As his first-team coach at Coventry, I worked hard in planning and organising the various team drills I felt were necessary to improve our results, but there were a number of times when Ron would suddenly scrap them at the last minute.
As we were about to start, he would come out of his office and say: 'Right, kid, what are you doing?'
'We're going to work on midfield players closing down and pushing across,' I'd explain.
But Ron's reaction was: 'No, no, no. Let's have a six-a-side.'
While I'm on the topic, here's Strachan on Frank Stapleton:
I am surprised that Frank, a wonderful all-round striker, did not go on to become a top manager. His thirst for football knowledge was insatiable, and he was forever talking about the game. Even when it was clear that you wanted to switch off and relax, he would want to have a long discussion about whether we should play 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 and subjects like that. I remember him even wanting to talk to me about football at a club Christmas part, when he was dressed as a clown and I went as Freddie Starr-cum-Adolf Hitler. I often had a joke about it. For example, on the even of one United match away from home, when I was having difficulty getting to sleep at our hotel, I rang Jimmy McGregor in his room and said: 'Jimmy, I need a sleeping pill - but on second thoughts, can you send Frank up?'. For United air trips, the players had to board the plane in alphabetical order. 'Frank' I said to him, 'I think I am going to change my name by deed poll. It is going to be Gordon Aardvark.'
It was all taken in good spirit and, indeed, Frank could never have been in any doubt about how much I and everbody else at Old Trafford valued him.
Well I wouldn't mind if someone like him was chosen again, if the FAI actually listened to his recommendations.
Someone mentioned Del Bosque, what a coup it would be to get him...
However I would like to point out a man again as a possible target.
Bora Milutinovic although of course our knowledgeable friends in the media haven't a clue who he is.
Forget all the "old boys" Aldo, etc. Bookies just trying to make some cash off you. None of the old boys will get the job full stop.....
Delaney is too shrewd to go down that avenue again, and I'm sick of hearing about all these guys odds at the boookies.
He knows he has to spread his wings and get a big name from elsewhere, however I wouldn't be too fond of Troussier. Something about a Freanch accent gets on my jib..
Aye, that Wenger fella....... :p
Hows Bennett doing, is he stil on loan at Southampton?
Is it completely beyond the realm of possibility that Jose Mourinho could be approached? Do we have to this melancholic view of who we can attract? I think it would be a good move on the part of the FAI to show us that they haven't lost all ambition whatsoever. Whats the worst he can say? No? No shame there in my opinion.
When Scotland got Berti Vogts he was a top manager with one of the best records in world football.
Russia got Guus Hiddink. What pedigree have they got since fall of USSR? Have barely qualified to major tournaments and when they have gotten there did sweet fa.
What about that German bloke who won EURO 2004 with Greece? Is he dead/ gainfully employed?
He is at Greece at the moment and he just qualified for Euro 2008 with them.
Yeah but is he HAPPY?
finland:
1 Poland 12 24
2 Portugal 12 23
3 Serbia 12 20
4 Finland 12 20
5 Belgium 12 15
6 Armenia 10 9
7 Kazakhstan 12 7
8 Azerbaijan 10 5
H to Azerbaijan and away to Portugal. Win those two, and barring the absolute most unfortunate series of results (aka Portugal, Finland and Serbia all finish on 26) and they qualify. I know I'd have been happy having it in our own hands with two games to go. Plus, of course, Finland never qualify for anything, probably won't this time, I'd imagine Hodgson's contract is about to expire and he might be interested in moving back closer to England.
I'd have him over Prince Philip's Trousers any day of the week.
This is the same man who is a managerial legend at Rangers and Galatasary, has won 3 Scottish Leagues, 3 Scottish League Cups, a English FA Cup, an English League Cup, and got Balckburn promoted back to the Premier and helped set the foundations for their continued survival? Yeah what a waste of space he's been as a manager:rolleyes:
I want Jewell, but I would have absolutly no problem if hodgson got it.
I wanted him last time round
Whose this dark horse called Mr Other? He's gote 21 votes so far............
Co Adriaanse has come from nowhere to fourth favourite at 14-1 with Paddy Power.
Yeah I checked this out his contract expires after the qualifiers and I dont think they will qualify but have they ever qualified and they were they were on a really bad run of qualifications until he took over. They were nearly finishing bottom of the groups and they were down to fifth seeds.
I can only name 4 players Hyppia,Forssell and Tanio and Nemi. Now that says as much about my ignorance of Finnish football but it does show that they dont have world class players or even top international players.
"Not Too Late To Beg Kerr To Come Back"
I'd say it is now that Kerr spouted venom about Delaney on NewsTalk. :D
For me, Roy Hodgson has to be the priority, he has done great jobs at previous national teams and has the experience needed, if he was offered it, I think he would take it.
If not him, the manager chosen should be just out of management, not someone who has spent the last 2 years away cause they need some time to back in the routine and that could affect performances and you can not risk that.
EDIT: Seeing the Poll, and to see Liam Brady with that votes, many of you complained that Stan had no experience of management an should not be chosen, well, Brady falls into that category, he has no experience of management, only at youth levels at Arsenal which is not international management.
Co Adriaanse would be another good candidate for the job. However, with a lot of the foreign managers being touted there are two problems: 1 Do they want it? 2. Can they speak English?
Whilst I think he would be a decent manager for us we could probably find someone with a similar record to him who has managed at international level.
I think you can presume a Dutch guy can speak English. They shoot people in Holland if they cannot speak English. :)
The same Graeme Souness that Rovers fans were delighted to see the back of? 'Managerial legend'? give over ffs!
I see you left out the mess that was his time at Liverpool, his fantastic reign at Benfica and his disaster that was Newcastle. 'This is the best squad of players I've worked with' he said in his first couple of months in charge there. Fair play to him, he tore that squad to shreds.
Oh, and what about Southampton, where he did fcuk all and managed to get spoofed by 'Weahs cousin'?
Fired after 4 months at Torino. Flopped fantastically at Benfica.
He was bankrolled at Rangers, thats common knowledge. He is a poor man manager, he is tactically inept and even more pig headed than Stan.
Souness for Ireland?
He managed Celtic for a while. Maybe not very successfully, but he did manage them. He'd be a great under-21 manager, not blinded by results but with an eye on the big picture of player development, which by all accounts is missing from a lot of solely results orientated youth football development.
