Has anyone mentioned Morrisseys debut Viva Hate. I'm on record on this very forum as pointing out I was quite unimpressed with Suedehead when it came out ...and to this day think he was threading water with it -but Every Day is Like Sunday? Man what a song! ...and that wan in the vid -I'd have slipped my hand up her blousey t-shirt at a glance. If she'd had let me -which she surely wouldn't.
I don't think so . Not forgotten though, just not a great album. Despite the fact that the two singles deserve a mention (yes, the two of them) there were better albums that year, and better Morrissey albums to come. It was a good debut though; solid without being spectacular.
Its sad that indie by numbers tat like surfer rosa is winning.
Dont know about you but im looking forward to 1994 Best Albums. So many classics to choose from and i daresay the winner of this competition will be from that year.
Am wondering if this is the most ludicrous comment I've ever read on here.
Care to elucidate on exactly which indie tat they were doing by the numbers? In 1988??
How is it their fault, or how does it change how good the album is that a pile of no-mark bands have ripped them off wholesale in the subsequent years?
You might as well hold Mavis Reilly responsible for Les Dennis. :p
Surfer Rosa was an original album 20 years ago. There's nothing "by numbers" in that record.
Their influence has been far reaching. Many bands have based their entire careers on ripping off the Pixies sound which over time has lessened the impact of the band and muddied the water as to the bands originality.
I think we've clarified that the Pogues qualify under 'other', but they're still well down on votes.
If I can chuck my tuppence at the Pogues issue. I can barely remember (14 at the time) so I'll bow to the insistence of anyone who actually does remember BUT I wouldn't be suprised if The Pogues IISFFGWG was indeed released in the middle of 1987 and re-released in Jan 88 following the success of Fairytale.
The Pogues had a very big hit in Spring of 87 with The Irish Rover (not on the original IISFFGWG I know) and It'd be a little curious that they wouldn't try and follow it a bit quicker than 8-10 months.
I also recall hearing that Fairytale was recorded in it's entirety in two recording sessions (slow solo bit at the start was tacked on later!!!) in mid to late 1986. So the record was ready to go.
Plausible, except for the fact that they were on Stiff records back then, who didn't exactly do things by the book, and were pretty much in the middle of a meltdown around that time.
As I said above their own official site gives a Stiff and Island catalog number (different covers too), but only makes reference to a Jan'88 release.
When does the best album of 1989 poll comeup?
Thursday
On the Pogues again, answers.com give a German release date in 1987 so I'm starting to think that Lionel's theory is probably right and that there was a reissue in Jan of 88. I was 7 at the time, and am not a Pogues fan so I don't know, but why would two seperate websites give 1987 as a release date? I'll try and find out the real date, but Wiki's specific June date in 1987 seems a bit too...well specific, for someone to make it up, plus why bother putting it back 6 months? Normally when Wiki is out it's because someone is acting up and putting in ridiculous info/dates
EDIT again: Amazon.com also put it at 1987 and they're usually bang on their release dates, CD Universe also give 1987 as the original release date and include this piece about a 1988 reissue of the album for sale at the moment,
Reissue of the Pogues' classic third album, their 1987 offering. Features the title track, 'Fairytale of New York', 'Sit Down By the Fire', a medley of traditional Irish music & much more.
So lads, mod hat is back on and the Pogues are discounted once again. There's dozens of sites if you google 'the Pogues If I Should Fall From Grace With God original 1987' that are given the release date as 1987 and that line from CD Universe clinches it for me. I'll take those apologies by PM as well people :)
I think so, but it got a Stiff release too. The Stiff release may have been 1987. Can anyone confirm this? (academic, I know, as the Pixies seem to have it sewn up)
Mmm, according to Discogs, it got a WEA release in '87, and an Island release with the new cover in '88
Ah yes ...Holly Johnson, Martika, Damien (Timewarp), that really annoying Bangles song ...1989 will surely cause a riot. Transvision Vamp were still really annoying ...it had it all.
Back to 88 though Voice of the Beehives Let It Bee has some very fine moments ...I Say Nothing, I Walk The Earth...
As there was no 'On Our Big Fat Merry-Go-Round' by A House, I had to go with REM...
If the Pogues are out, then it's clearly The Fall, Frenz Experiment.
Btw, the usually "bang on" amazon.com also have NWA as a 1989 release (as does Rolling Stone's "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die."
http://www.amazon.com/Straight-Outta...6Q/ref=mb_oe_l
Godammit you people are really starting to **** me off. You're looking at a reissue again, amazon also have a 1988 release, not to mention a further couple of dozen websites citing 1988 as it's release if you put in Straight Outta Compton 1988 release
Anymore trawling through releases and reissues and I'm ending this competition. It's already had the life sucked out of it anyway
I thought the whole point of weekly polls was to allow seven days of 'discussion'. Questioning release dates was inevitable. Don't lose the faith yet, Jebus (although if 1989 isn't as one-sided as a Zimbabwean election I might throw my hat at it as well).
It's grand as long as people actually make a bit of effort to look up the right release date, it's quite simple and I've been patient enough with people on this. I'm able to gather what year an album is released within a minute of searching google, why can't some people on here? So in future anyone jumping on, throwing their toys out of the pram and mouthing off without the proper research done will start getting slapped with infractions
Bon Jovi finish level with REM & ahead of Metallica, what has the world become
I'll give benefit of the doubt until the 1989 poll but I'm with Noby, if it isn't an African Tin-Pot Dictator style landslide I will finally give up on the human race.
I applaud the Bon Jovi voters - at least they're being true to themselves, not using hindsight, but voting for what they were actually listening to 20 years ago.
Sure we could all pretend that in 1988 Ireland was the creditbility capital of the world, where we all listened to Pixies, Metallica etc., whereas the reality had a lot more mullets and stone-washed denim, and poodle-rock was the order of the day.
It won't be.
I've gone all contrary and will certainly be voting differently to what I said on another thread. :)
Missed my oblique reference Lionel. Should have googled Daisy Age!
Nothing against the record but I'll get into bed with anyone (in the interests of political expediency) so I'm rallying all the anti-Roses to my De La Banner. :D
BTW Jebus can you make the polls public? Always nice to see who voted for what.
1989 appears to be a public poll. I'll be editing my Christmas card list accordingly.
