It wasn't that high (think the game was Summer 1986 as well).
From memory,. the capaciity of the Brandywell in the mid-to-late 80-'s was less than 11,000. Then once the library got built it went down to under 10,000 I believe.
It's currently somewhere between 8-9,000 I think.
It was Cloughy who quoted that on FA cup final day Steve, and I'm not one to dispute him. ;)
The Cobh semi final saga brought big crowds to the Showgrounds in 1983. Some footage from the final replay here http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=tu-tGLhjM3I.
The biggest crowd ever witnessed in the Showgrounds was probably the League cliniching win against Shams in 1977.
The new capacity of the RSC is circa 3100 all seated, with the inclusion of the new stand which holds approx 1760. No standing is permitted now afaik.
The record attendance at the RSC was 8,500 at the FAI Cup semi-final against Shelbourne in April 1997. In Kilcohan in the 60s & 70s it wasnt unusual to have crowds in excess of 10,000. Although for the Man U & Celtic games in 1968 & 70 upwards of 50,000+ crammed into Lansdowne.
Turner's Cross - capacity 7485 seats, record attendance circa 11,000 for both v Dundalk 1993 and v Shamrock Rovers League Cup Final 1999
In pre Cork City days did not Cork derbies between Hibs and Celtic attract crowds of over 20,000 on some occasions.
just curios
what did cork city get for an attendance against bayern munich all those years ago?
No, There was only about 4500 at it. It was played in MUsgrave Park And ticket prices were sky high about IR£20.00 at the time, thanks to pat the plonk
Not a chance I'd reckon, unless it dates back before I started going in the 80s. Safe-holding capacity of Richmond is 5,400 although the ground could probably hold 6,500 or 7,000 at a squash. I seem to remember talk of a 7,500 crowd in the mid-nineties (a friendly against Celtic I think) although that was the Dolan era when attendances tended to be as inflated as his belly.
Apparently the safe holding capacity of any ground is based on the number and width of exit gates. It's calculated to allow to safe outflow of spectators in an emergency. I think there's a similar calculation based on the numbers of turnstiles and the final figure is the lower of the two.
On the road at the moment, but will post record attendances from copy of Supporters guide to Irish Football (South & North) unless someone beats me to it.
Just been to Richmond Park to watch Pats and Longford, if the stand side was once terracing then 10,000-13000 could have been possible when no proper crowd limits.
Thanks

Cork City's must be higher than 11,000, when they played Derry in the 86 cup quarter final at flower lodge there was more than 20,000 at it
Unfortunatly records do not appear to be precise, as I dare say there may be instances as indicated above where there has been a greater record at another ground but records shown are for current ground.
UCD may also be an example - did they not once get more at annother ground than 4000 when they played in Europe.
Pretty much all records are guesses anyway, and we've seen on his forum how wildly inaccurate they can be. Until recently clubs weren't forced to count numbers through the gate and none did. SOme reported the gate takings, but considering the amount of concessions that operated when crowds were at their peak, getting actual figures for any league game is impossible
Record attendance for Sligo Showgrounds, 13,908 v Cobh Ramblers FAI Cup 1983.
