lads my dad is a forrester and he said that the main problem would be drainage. As red arrow said scratching needs to be done. Now strandhill golf course have the machines to do this and they are only used about once a month, the rest of the time they are just sitting there doing nothing. Surely if this is whats needed rovers could approach strandhill g.c and rent the machinery.
When was a game last called off in The Showgrounds due to a waterlogged pitch?
ten years ago they put a great drainage system under the pitch, there is no problem with drainage.
It is being rolled next Tuesday and Wednesday.
remember about 3 years ago, the pitch was ripped up at both ends, they were updating the drainage so there should be no problem with that part
In fairness to all concerned we do have a tendancy to call the green area between the blue stand and red stand a pitch. When really Pat Fenlon got it 100% right two years ago when he called it a farmer's field. It's just a field and that's all it will be until the work that's needed to bring it up to standard is done. Look around the league, at clubs that at some stage had playing surfaces like we have now. If you were to go back far enough all clubs were in our perdiciment. Time moves on unfortunately we didn't. Back in the mid-ninties when Laurie Sanchez was manager he complained about the surface. Work commenced with the pumping of sand into the surface and an improvement was noticed. Unfortunately the work wasn't continued probably due to the lack of funds. Then the turn of the centuary 'the new stand' was built. In doing so the drainage which was in place was disturbed and for this reason the channels were dug across the pitch to lay a new drainage system. The Showgrounds has a wonderful record when it comes to not having games called off no matter how bad the weather gets, drainage was never a problem.
Any work that needs to be carried out would need to be done in the growing season which is March to October. Unfortunately that bang on in unison with our football calendar. So basically it's a no win situation. Even if some sugar daddy gave the club the 200K required to carry out the work mentioned before the football season wouldn't allow for the work to be done unless the ground was closed for two/three months.
Hows a rollar going to help with it being cut up so easily?Surely isnt the dampness thats making it so esy to slice up
Ur post sums it up well clubman - with reference to the sugar daddy even if it did happen for next season, i doubt RG would let anything happen.
To other posters, there isnt a problem with getting machinery to do work with the pitch or anything else - however at this stage with the pitch all you can do is get to bad from very bad. But even that would be something. The pitch needs to be redone and has always been a field, like clubman says. Sure when fenlon said that, RG went straight on the defensive in the papers; trying to make black appear white. a blind man can see what needs to be done and I would love to know what RG motives are for not taking this issue in hand and blatantly ignoring it and everyone trying to help on the matter !!
RG's reasoning for not using a heavy roller on the pitch is that there is good aeration and this would cause the ground underneath to become more tightly packed and cause the pitch to lose a good amount of drainage capability - right or wrong i dont know as i'm not an expert on this.
But one thing i do know one thing, that most people in this forum are using RG as a monster to hide behind, maybe he is holding the club back but i'm sure its not malicious!
The fact is people hide behind this obstacle - he doesnt own the club and doesnt have the final say on everything. On saturday for the clean up when physical action (ie work ) was required all the young fella's that turned up were a credit to the club but the older lads just didnt show! but RG was there, maybe misguidedly, but he was there!!!!!
There is a huge amount of whingers in this club/forum....if you dont like something then do something about it and dont clog up this forum!!
On a more alarming note, the hardcore at the entrance into the showgrounds has been laid in preparation for tarmacing but i didnt see any provision for drainage, if there is none going in this will make a fine mess as the water will stand.
And by the way the contractors on the job are very poor at what they do!, I have worked at this b4 and these guys couldnt give a 5h1t!
your answer is exactly the kind of retort i have grown to expect!
Of course your answer is fact...obviously!
i'm not on any pedestal, i am only relaying what i saw on saturday....i do less for the club than most but i just try not to endlessly complain and do nothing.
So red_away if you live by the sword you die by the sword. Obviousily you're not a whinger so what you going to do about the lack of drainage at the entrance to the Showgrounds?
Having worked in the trade you obviousily can do a good job and probably better that the said contractor.
O and by the way this is by no means a whinge just giving credit where credit is obviousily due.
On a lighter note, I totally agree with your comment regarding RG. The man is a legend. I don't think he gets anywhere near the credit he deserves and being the type of man that he is he'd never look for credit anyway.
I'd agree totally with ya on this. People bulsh1t on about the state of the pitch and the ground but yet they don't turn up to help.
How can someone say "Many many people have tried helping the club but never get anywhere" Simple as this, you go in and help out, its not as if you are looking for recognition, you do it for the good of the club.
The UEFA Champions League final between Manchester United and Chelsea will be played on a Moscow pitch installed by an Irish company, who's CEO is from Sligo.
The historic match at the Luzhniki Stadium will take place on a natural grass pitch constructed by Support In Sport (SIS), the company with offices in Sligo, Cumbria (UK) and Holland.
Sligo man, George Mullan is Chief Executive Officer of the company.
It's the fourth time SIS have installed a UEFA Champions League Final pitch.

Just like to make the point that the two lads that are now working at improving the surface are doing a great job. Over time these lads will prove what has been said here so many times and that's if you have someone doing the job that knows what they are doing then they will make a difference.
Well done lads - keep up the great work!!!!!!!
Yeah it's improved a lot but that’s what those lads do for a living so you would expect it to but maybe if a certain board member mentioned in this thread already hadn't refuse to have it rolled it wouldn't become such a joke in the first place:o
Trouble in Moskow!
according to skysportsnews the pitch in moskow is terrible,
if they would make the showgies one terrible i'd be happy.:p
Moscow. Jesus Christ!
