...and you can make a call on what McAteer would be doing :p

always had great time for McAteer. as said above he gave it his all whenever he put on the green shirt.
his goal against holland is one of the best moments in our recent football past.
he nutmegged Maldini (iirc) in the WC94 when he was only a young fella breaking through.
he is a very witty man.
the keane scribbling jibe oozed class as a lunatic was trying to knock his block off.
he readily admits to the trigger nickname, have heard him tell the pizza story and jimmy white story a few times too. he has a sense of humour ffs. seriously lads some people on here are a bit too PC for their own good. demeaning him indeed. get a life.
i remember his interview after the Denmark friendly in the run up to the WC02. Duff had an absolute stormer and was taken off early enough (iirc). when Macca was asked about Duff in the post match interview he said 'It is rare that a player wins the Man of the Match award in the first half alone, I can't remember a better 45 minutes by and Irish Player .... except for my second half against the Dutch'!!!!
Always liked him as a player and a man. Never took himself too seriously so why are the soft skinned PC brigade on here doing it for him.
The defining moment of Jason McAteer:

I still get goosebumps whenever I look at that picture and the faces of the crowd. Magic.
Mind you, a lot of Celtic (Rovers?) tops and even two rugby ones I think.
I was in the East Upper and thought he'd hit it over at first!
Good picture, only a few have their arms in the air, the rest are open mouthed waiting for the ball to hit the net.
Talking ****e again on Sky tonight, just watched the coverage there. But got a few important goals for us so fair play but just glad he is not on the selection panel.
i think thats a bit unfair on mcateer really-thought he spoke well. cunningham is very drole and for god sake man shave that head or at least have a word with stephen ireland.
In fairness McAteer was just trying to defend Stan by putting a positive spin on things, I doubt he really believes half of what he said
Very good!
That's what Mrs Stuttgart said too actually. She says Jayo has lovely hair and I said that he had indeed done the Wash & Go ads in Ireland in his youth.
I though Jason was quite articulate but you don't expect SKY pundits to try and strip an argument down to its bones.
I think Jeff Stelling was hoping for a more reasoned and comprehensive response from Jason when he asked:
(Paraphrasing)
Jeff: "Should Hunt count himself a bit unlucky not to be starting?"
Jason. "No. No, not really".
:D
yeah right. as opposed to a maniac with veins popping out of his neck having to be restrained and frogmarched from the pitch by team mates!!! he took the p1ss out of a purple faced RK who at that time was ready to take a swing at any member of the Irish squad who represented the country at WC02.
a SKY pundit said at the time 'are we now going to have to endure RK washing his dirty laundry on the pitch every time he comes up against his ex-international collegues - it will be a very long season'.
I stand by my comment, McAteer made a complete fool of RK during a very heated incident. 'So-called Village idiot' (1) - 'So-called Deep thinking, voice of reason, man of the people' (-1000)... I wonder has he an extra chapter written for his book explaining why he was right for trying to level McAteer for making a pencil on paper gesture
Boll1x it was, it was a very funny gesture that had the desired effect of getting into Keane's head. Hard to have an impact on a game when you're off the pitch in a sulk coz someone took the **** out of you. Keane was the idiot that day, he made an utter tit of himself and was totally unprofessional. Let himself and his team down, had it been somone else no doubt his Corkness would have berated him for it. Can you imagine how he'd react if a Sunderland player did something like that tomorrow? It was typical of the hypocrisy of the man.
Interesting stuff, even if a bit dated, about Keane, Mick Mc and Souness.
Favourite part (because it echoes my own sentiments):
What's been your best moment in football?
Scoring the winner against Holland in the World Cup qualifier in 2001. The Dutch had already booked their hotels in Japan and Korea so it was lovely to wipe the smiles off their faces. Fantastic, absolutely fantastic time.
Much more interesting quote than the ones which started this thread ;)
I see Jason has got a job as coach at Chester.

In his football days Jason McAteer was nicknamed after Trigger from Only Footballs and Horses, Peckham’s finest road sweeper. Apparently McAteer once spotted Jimmy White in a nightclub and tried to get his attention by yelling the catchphrase “One hundred and eighty” to the snooker player. Another rumour alleges that Alan Thompson once asked him to pass the tomato ketchup and McAteer replied: “Red or brown?”
The stories are probably false, because, if this interview with Jarlath Regan on the Irishman Abroad podcast is anything to go by, McAteer is one of the most articulate men in football.
he's admitted most of the stories about him are true
Saw him at Off The Ball live before Euro 2012 in The Mercantile, and he had the place in the palm of his hand. As you say, very articulate, knows his audience, and has his comedy timing down down to an art
My favourite story about him is one I actually saw happen. He was on Soccer AM one morning with Razor Ruddock, who kept calling him "Dave" after Rodney in Only Fools And Horses*. Anyway, it's coming to the end of the show and they're doing the 3rd Eye, where people send in funny clips you might have missed from games. It's a Spanish game, and a fan is celebrating a goal in the front row of the stand. His hat's fallen off, and he climbs over the barrier in front of him to get it back. Climbing back to his seat, he slips and hops his head off the barrier. Cut back to the studio and everyone's laughing at it (to be fair, it is pretty funny) so they play the clip again. Back in the studio and Ruddock is absolutely splitting himself laughing, even the hosts say "alright mate, it's not that funny", so he answers, "no, no, you don't understand. Dave McAteer's just turned to me and said 'You'd think he'd learn his lesson the first time!'"
*McAteer's nickname was Trigger before he came to Liverpool, but there was another player with that nickname when he got there (I think it was Rob Jones) so they changed McAteer's nickname to Dave
Yeah I've heard him tell the 180 story himself, and the one about asking for a pizza to be divided into four slices, as he'd never eat eight. He obviously plays to the gallery but better than taking himself too seriously.
Jesus Razor is fat!
Happy 44th Birthday
To be fair, he got the ball

If you're in the Northwest this may interest you, a night with Jason McAteer and Eric Lalor in the Clanree, Letterkenny.

Has book to sell; talks about battle with depression.
http://www.thejournal.ie/jason-mcate...05505-Oct2016/
Like many footballers (and indeed probably in many walks of life) he found it hard to cope with retirement and hence the depression. I suppose the difference with sportsmen is that they had the adulation and the retirement comes in their mid-thirties with a lifetime stretching ahead of them not knowing what to do, especially for someone like Jason who was unlikely to make it as a coach, manager or even a pundit.
went in to Eason's on Saturday to get his book signed. Was in good form and chatted for a few minutes. The lad in front of me was on crutches, so McAteer was asking him about the injury, what exercises he was doing for recovery, gave him some advice, etc. Nice to see.
