This might yield results in the short term but is an utterly retrograde step which says more about the chairman than it does about anything else.

Actually this Sky Sports quote of Kevin Keegan hoping (against hope) to lure Thierry Henry to St. James’s Park has been pulled out of context. The Newcastle United manager did indeed say this during a two-hour programme on Radio Newcastle:

Apart from the fact that there doesn't seem to be financial suicide at Newcastle (apart from buying a few turkeys), this is the closest comparison I've seen to how Leeds went from Champions League semi-final to playing the likes of Bournmouth. It has something to do with basic 'rot' in the club and players who couldn't be ar*sed to try and fix it.
Like at Leeds, I bet there are many players at the club who believe that, if Newcastle get relegated, their agent will get them a cushy deal elsewhere. Trust me, it's not nice when it happens

Do you honestly think professional footballers think like that?. I would think that most of them being the good pros they are would take pride in their profession.... At the end of the day having having relagation on your CV cant be good.
Shanman, 5 years ago, I would have posted the same reply as you. Do I think top flight pros care about the club they play for? In a word, no! They care about money first and, when that is secure, they think about personal glory in the form of medals, champions league etc. and not a care in the world where they get it. They even abandon playing for their country by 30 years of age!
Anelka, Kewell, Alan Smith, Ashley Cole, Sol Campbell, Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown (hah!) the list goes on. What managers do they get it from? Redknapp, Graham, O'Leary, Erickson etc.
Sorry for the wake up call but gone are the days of the 1 club player and what it might bring him and the managers like Shankly.

By and large I agree with you. Players are like ordinary workers employed by a company. They like to see the company do well because it means more money for them and they'll do their best. If it starts to slide, they won't work extra hard to stop the rot but will look for a job elsewhere. I don't believe in any of this badge kissing stuff some of them do. Obviously, like in every walk of life, there are exceptions (e/g/ see Keane's reaction when Spurs won the Carling Cup) and players like to win things but most wouldn't be that bothered with whom they win them.Quote:

Keegan was doing a good job there. They had four points from three games: Two were away to Man U and Arsenal, not a bad start to the season. Also, just look at the run they went on towards the end of the season to lift them up the table.
I wouldn't be surprised if the "Director of Football" is appointed manager now.
I feel a bit sorry for King Kev, i reckon he was conned into taking that position.
I mean having to work with D Wise must have been a kick in the balls
