I know plenty of people who want to play for Ireland (and wouldn't be too sure if Stokes is one of them!)....doesn't mean they deserve a call-up. What has he done to merit being called up? And why do you have to bring Keane's name into a completely unrelated issue???? Jaysus some people need to wake up and realise that Saipan was 5 years ago and get over it....
Joey O’Brien and Steven Reid withdraw from Ireland’s squad for match in Wales

Bolton Wanderers’ Joey O’Brien and Blackburn Rovers’ Steven Reid were today withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland squad to play Wales in their final UEFA Championship qualifying match at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, on Saturday September 17.
Don Givens, who is caretaker manager for the match, called up Darren Potter of Wolverhampton Wanderers to bring the strength of the squad to 21 players.
The withdrawal of O’Brien and Reid came as no surprise. O’Brien has been struggling lately to overcome a hamstring injury while Reid is easing back into competition after battling against two serious injuries over the past twelve months.
Givens discussed Reid’s current fitness level with the Blackburn medical staff this week. The player last played for Ireland when they lost 0-1 to Germany in Cologne in September 2006 and is on the verge of returning to first team football with Blackburn.
Reid spoke yesterday of the encouragement he had received from being named in the Ireland squad. He had been kept out of competitive football by back and cruciate ligament injuries and played a full 90 minutes for Blackburn reserves on Tuesday as he stepped up his return to fitness.
O’Brien, who is still eligible for U21 football, was also sidelined by injury for much of last season at Bolton Wanderers. He was an ever present with Bolton this season until injury again interrupted his run.
Where'd you hear that Stephen Carr's retired again?
Dunne, O'Brien and Kelly all injured. O'Dea and Bruce called up.
Is there some doubt about McShane also?
When we got to any Finals (remember them) it would take a broken bone to keep anybody out of the squad, players would be lying through their teeth about their fitness levels to get on board.
What time is the ko Saturday?
Harte and Foley are out now ,this is a disgrace ...off course they will be fit along with o'brien come the next club game
based on the players left, we will end up with a back four of:
Finnan O'Shea McShane Kilbane or
Finnan McShane Bruce O'Shea
neither inspire much confidence!
I'd like to see Kilbane benched for this and go with
Given/Doyle
Finnan McShane Bruce O'Shea
McGeady Carsley Reid Hunt
Doyle Keane
If/when Keane misses a couple of 1st half sitters and throws his hands in the air to blame some flash photography or something, I hope Givens shows some stones and subs him at half time.
I'd go with the following team;
Given
Finnan
Mc Shane
O 'Shea
Kilbane
Mc Geady
Reid
Carsley
Hunt
Keane
Doyle
Too strong on paper for wales. But then arn't we always:rolleyes:
why the hell has St. Ledger not been called up?
I can say hell on here can I??
The sooner the new manager comes in the better, it appears some of Stan's bizarre decision making has clearly rubbed off the people around him. No recognised left-back in the squad, 2 underperforming strikers who make cameos for their clubs. And as for Pat Devlin, Stan's parrot, his squad for the B game with the Scots is a joke.
I'd probably line up with:
Murphy
Finnan_O'Shea_McShane_O'Dea
McGeady_Carsley_Reid_Kilbane
______Stokes__Keane/Doyle
I'm going with Joe Murphy in nets because Joe Murphy is a cool name. If Given is 100% I don't want him to play. If he gets injured and is on the sidelines it will not be good for his career.
Kilbane's confidence has to be shot, I think his performances at left full for Wigan have answered the long standing question of whether or not he can do a job there for us. I would start him on the left side of midfield, just to cap him and hope he stays on for another campaign.
Wales should be shat enough for McGeady to actually play reasonably.
I'm sick of Keane/Doyle axis, and due to a crap selection of forwards in the squad, I'll go with either Keane or Doyle and Stokes.
Super Lee Carsley will want to play this game. He's proud of playing for Ireland and wants to get as many caps as possible at 33 years of age.
Stephen Hunt is doubtful, but if he is fully fit he could start ahead of Kilbane
Hopefully Givens will grow a sack and name his own skipper, maybe give it to Joe Murphy for a laugh.
Douglas out.
Hardly the best news of the week?
The "just to cap him" remark is what i meant made no sense. Can you explain that? No player should ever start with an international side "just to get a cap".
And i doubt very much that starting against wales in a meaningless match with the team in limbo will affect whether he stays on in the next campaign.
And for what its worth, I've no doubt he'll still be around next September. whether thats a good or bad thing is a matter of opinion
Err, take a look at the championship table. He along with most of the Preston team have been very poor this season. Still I think he merits a place in the squad ahead of a player who is doing well to get on the bench for Celtic. Darren O'Dea does not deserve to be in the squad at the moment. Paddy mcCarthy would have been an option also maybe
Think Paddy McC is injured (well according to the other thread anyway!)....Reason I mentioned Sledge (as his friends probably may or may not possibly perhaps call him) is that he's getting rave reviews in a struggling team and we're not exactly blessed with talent in that position. He has potential and at least should be involved in the squad at this stage...
Id go with:
Given
Finnan McShane O'Dea O'Shea
McGeady Reid Carsley Hunt
Keane Doyle
sky sports news is now reporting that Keane could miss the game with a foot injury. Does this mean Stokes partners Doyle or would Givens put 5 men in MF?
I keep seeing this word Carsley. Oh people, no, no!
Friendly with some bite - time to throw on someone who (a) is a long term prospect and (b) has heard of the game of football.
Carsley isn't an Irish Dunga, like many seem to think.
Come to think of it, he isn't even an Alan Reynolds.
Time to give Joe Gamble a game...
