Bora Milutinovic?

He's a critic. That's his job for god's sake. Under your standard, noone is entitled to voice an opinion on Stan unless they are willing to put themselves forward for the job. Frankly, thats a load of boll*x, complete craptalk.
Besides, the opinion he voiced regarding Staunton is completely accurate, and one which is wholly representative of most Irish fans. Stan was put in a job he wasn't even close to being qualified for, and is clearly not able for.
He's earned well over €500,000 in the period he has been in charge. That is not value for money! A complete waste!
If anything, our performances and results have regressed under Stan, eventhough the strength and quality of the squad has improved.
We'd all love a world class manager, but given the financial and footballing constraints we face, we are very unlikely to get that. In reality, a proven, middle-tier Premiership manager like Paul Jewell or Steve Coppell is the very best we could expect (and would represent a collosal step up from Stan). Even a good championship manager like Pardew, Dowie or Newell would represent a step up. Thus, Dunphy is not pathetic in putting Jewell's name forward, it's the reality we face!! What do you expect? Jose Mourinho to walk out on Chelsea for the FAI??
In my opinion, we have a squad that was definitely capable of finishing second in our group (thus qualifying for Euro 2008), and which will be even stronger once the Qualifiers for World Cup 2010 come around. Dunphy's core point was that we have to give this squad the best possible chance to reach the World Cup finals. To do that, we have to have the best available manager to lead our team. Simply put, Staunton isnt that man.
Don Givens?
Martin o'neil anyone ?
The first suggestion was a joke, just in case it wasn't obvious.
Roddy Collins for Ireland
Keep an eye on Henk ten Cate. His contract at Ajax is untill the end of the season and rumour is he wants to go when it finishes. Or he could be pushed soon enough because the Ajax board are stupid. Top manager.
I have to agree with Dunphy. Jewell is the right man for the job. He did a terrific job with wigan, and even better with Bradford. A former Wednesday manager did a good job for us in the past as well!!
We have a ****in manager for gds sake, hate this xrap, its getting as bad as the english situation, before last saturday.
I think Bruce Arena would do better than staunton. (Former USA coach) - at least he plays to his players strengths - and leaves them in their natural position. Jewell would be ideal though.
Do not even mention Don Givens you'll only be giving the FAI ideas. He is a useless manager with a useless record.
I would be happy with Burley or Jewell. Either would have got us through to 2008.
Just to throw another name into the hat...
Dick Advocaat's move to manage Australia apparently is not a done deal. He is not keen on being based Down Under and his Russian club are putting up a bit of a fight to keep him.
Surely he would be great for the job. Dunno if the $$$ would be right or if the ole ole heads could handle a former Rangers manager at the helm...
We have a poor manager Bellavistaman, that's the difference. p*** poor tacticly, p*** poor public relations, confusing squad selections and amateur excuses after poor results.
The best one ever was saying San Marino would cause teams problems and how they were no longer whipping boys after we scored a last minute winner. He must've thought we'd all miracously forgot that Germany went into double figures against them a few weeks earlier.
I could reel off at least a dozen of his decisions in squad selections that have left me scratching my head.
This is all idle speculation as it seems the FAI and Stan are not going to part company anytime soon which is sad because it will inevitably lead to one of our greatest ever servants (Stan) getting a load of abuse from the fans at the next set of games.
That said my choice would most definetly be Paul Jewell. He is a man who has proven on a number of occassions that he can work with limited resources. Also he would not break the budget constraints I am sure the FAI are working under. He is also a manager who is quite comfortable with the media and would be quite a likeable character.
However I think the most important aspect of this is that I think he would take the job.His reasons for resigning from Wigan last season was that he had enough of the day to day pressures of being a Premiership manager so the less stressful world of international management would suit him perfectly. He is being held to his contract by Wigan currently so he would not be able to sign without some form of compensation but this may only apply to club management and not the international scene. Some investigation would be needed.
Again there is no point in even discussing this as those who make the decisions (ie John Delaney) have decided to sit on their hands a little bit longer.
Some one needs to sit on his head never mind him sitting on his hands. If the FAI were a proper company/business then the MD would be sacked for failure to hit targets and expectations. Stan must have some dirt on him up his sleeve.
would agree that paul jewell would be a great choice , i really rate him as a manager.
ah come off it, he was way out of his depth, even weh he was manager of Germany they couldnt wait to get rid of him
I would love to get Leo beenhakker (or however you spell his name)......doing wonders with Poland, and was excellent tactically with T and T in the last world cup................surely we can nick him off Poland after the euros
Did he not win the European Championship with Germany in their old enemy's back yard beating them in the semis's. German managers are expected to win European Championships/World Cups - i would imagine there is more pressure of expectation. Scotland didnt work out for varoius reasons
Certainly wouldnt be adverse to a respected foreign manager/coach ,if available and willing
yeah he did, despite himself
upto that point every German manager had won at least one trophy, so he was under intense pressure, but having Sammer, mattheus, and a solid german team in a poor tournament it wasnt the hardest trophy to win, and the Czechs were unlucky not to win it themselves
Paul Jeweel would probably take the bolton job since i reckon it will be up for grabs soon enough
If you want a manager with passion no nonsense and a great motivator that dont give you loads of bull! then you wouldnt go far wrong with NEIL WARNOCK!! i recon he could get the best out of the players and tell them straight if they played s*"t! and wouldnt be affraid to drop the stars if they werent doing it for us!
anyone with me on this then???
I can't stand the man but he would be an improvement on Stan and he has the appropriate experience of getting some success on a low budget. I don't agree with the "don't give you loads of bull" statement though, he has come out with his fair share of bull over the years :)
My choice would be Mike Newell. I'd also take McCarthy back in a shot now that the whole Saipan thing has settled down. However, there would probably still be sections of the media that would slate him if he got a bad result and there would be a compensation issue too. Wolves wouldn't let him go so easily. Maybe get rid of Stan now and take Mick on for the last 3 games of the campaign and see how the media, players and fans warm to him. If it's successful offer him a contract for the WC qualifiers.
I think we should seek a Bora Milutinovic/Phillipe Troussier/Guus Hiddink type World Cup specialist, someone who has gotten the job done on several occasions and has the knack of the international game.
Why the f**k would McCarthy give up his job at Wolves on the chance that he may be offered a new contract by the FAI if he was successful in three games and if the media and the fans warmed to him.
The most ridiculous suggestion I have ever come accross.
Didnt Jewell quit Wigan because of health and family reasons. I think the strain of Premiership management was really getting to him and he didnt look a well man at the end of last season. I think he would jump at the chance of managing us and i think it would be excellent for all concerned
Although good managers are hard to come by i think it would be a mistake to appoint an unproven manager at international level.Getting the best out of ordinary players at Leicester and Celtic hardly Qualifies martin to lead Ireland to the world cup finals. It can't be a coincidence that none of the top teams have ever approached him.
Sorry I didnt make my point 100% clear. I didnt mean for him to give up his job at Wolves but to just come in as cover for our last 3 games, when we look for a long term replacement but with an open mind on offering him the job if it works out well. It's not going to happen but he did say he would like to manage Ireland again after a few years in the English league.
Anyway I would prefer someone like Newell and wouldn't be opposed to Paul Jewell either and that would be more likely because they are both free agents.
Surely getting the best out of ordianry players is exactly what's required?
MON is tied up at Villa now. He's got backing and he's building a team of young British players (in the main) and is being allowed time for his ideas to take shape. No chnace he'd even consider it.
Jewell is credible and I think the point about stress above means that maybe he'd consider it. Plenty of upside - if he's a proven success the England job could be his. I don't know that much about him. He seems to have done well with limited resources but at same time his "successes" have really been all about avoiding relegation, no? OK, Carling Cup final, one good league campaign too I suppose.
Warnock, please God no. Absolutely reprehensible character.
Martin Jol may be out of work soon. We'd have Chris Hughton back as no. 2. To this day I think he has been very lucky to escape the flak that Kerr took.
The package shouldn't be a deal breaker. Offer a big cash bonus upon qualification. That's how it works in industry. Salary plus bonus if targets are met.
Newell would be too much of a maverick for the FAI I reckon.
Works for me, his p45 is imminent, but I'm sure he would laugh at the salary.Good point in todays paper,ie Stan is on 500,000 a year, but if he walked or was pushed would even an EL club consider employing him? eh NO CHANCE!
Warnock??? Please God no. Same goes for O'Leary. I'd rather keep Stan. I'd love us to go down the Jewell/Jol route but I imagine they'd probably rather be tortured than try and pull rabbits out of hats with our squad of players. John Aldridge would be crazy enough to take it on but is he good enough? Decent stint at Tranmere for a while but top class international football shows no mercy - just ask Stan!!!!
John Aldridge wouldn't be the worst choice in the world but I'd much prefer Jewell or even giving McCarthy a 2nd shot, really hoping it isn't someone like Warnock ,Don Givens or O'Leary, unfortunately O'Leary is the fav at 2-1
can anybody remember all the applicants for the job last time round? Did Bryan Robson get an interview?
