GO Habs Go Habs GO Habs
Toronto beat Montreal 6-5 last night... but if the NY Islanders win tonight Leafs are out of the play-offs TOO!
Calgary look the best bet for a Canadian Stanley Cup winning side this season.
I'd go for the Penguins as an outside bet. They have tremendous attacking talent including Sidney Crosby, who is arguably the best player in the NHL, but for the main part they're too young and inexperienced, this might have come to early for them.
My guess would be Buffalo or Anaheim.
Great to beat the Canadiens. For tonight at least, I'll be a Devils fan.
Let's go Buffalo...
4 of the 8 Eastern qualifiers are from the Atlantic division this year. It's been a very strong division this season. Good win for the Islanders. It's very hard to put multiples goals past Brodeur away and beat him in a shoot out after you gave up two late goals.
I don't want to see the Cup go to another team from an area that doesn't care about hockey. These cities have fans that turn out in droves when the club is winning, and maybe not even then, but more often than not they play to a lot of empty seats. Carolina is last year's champion, and their fans stayed away this year. The team played rotten, as well. Have the playoffs come down to two cities that are hockey-loving places, US or Canada. Get rid of the teams in Phoenix, Atlanta, Florida, etc, that don't know a hockey stick from a branch.
Probably anywhere north of the Mason Dixon Line.
I haven't watched the regular season too much the past few years because the Blackhawks suck, but I always watch the playoffs, currently I'm hoping Detroit loses, because they were good rivals with the Hawks when they were actually good. Game is in overtime right now...
Sabres are rocking the house so far. NY Rangers are not looking good for moving on given that they are down 2-0 in the series. Maybe if I believe really hard, this is Buffalo's year.
Of the teams left, I'm up for Ottawa. 2-1 up against the Devils and the next games at home. Good chance to do it.
Well if Vancouver go out to the Ducks I'll transfer my allegience to Ottowa. Want a Canadian team to do it. I'm still hoping for a Canucks comeback though.
I'd say Ottawa will be putting the Devils out. They won the first and third games comfortably enough and only narrowly lost the second. They also made short work of the Penguins which included some excellent defensive displays.
Good to see the Red Wings lose last night :)
well they thrashed the Sabres last night! I picked the Sens to go close before christmas. I was laughed at...
One thing i cant get over is the difference between regular season hockey and play-off hockey. The difference in intensity is huge. Its like a different game and im totally won over on the sport now. Even if i still have trouble with seeing the puck... :o
Well, Stanley Cup game 3 tonight. Sens v Ducks. I have my Spezza t-shirt on and hoping for a much improved Senators display. They only lost the first two games by a single goal each, but Anaheim looked a lot better both nights.
I think Ottawa still have it in them to at least bring it to 2-2, but if they lose tonight its game-over, IMO.
that Chris Pronger is some dirty b@stard. He was suspended for the last game (he was also suspended for a similar offence in the previous play off round against Detroit Red Wings) but the Ducks rallied and beat the Sens in Ottowa to make it 3-1 in the series. Sens look like theyve lost the fight. But i really really hope they can somehow win it.
Prongers Hits.
against Red Wings
against Senators
Anaheim win 5-2 on the night and take the Stanley Cup and beat Ottawa 4-1 in the best of seven.
Fcuking Skanks winning the Cup again. It's 14 years since a Canadian team won the Stanely Cup. To give an example to Irish Non-hockey fans , it would be like as if UK counties played Hurling and were good enough to win the All-Ireland 14 years in a row. Canadian teams can make the play offs Ok. They can even win their Division and their Conference and make the final stages of the competition.... they cannot close the deal however.... not since 1993.
A bit of an anti-climax in the end. Made worse by the fact that it was a Mickey Mouse team that won. It would have been nice if Ottawa had won, but game 5 was so painful to watch its a bit of a relief that its all over. ;)
yeah i felt the same way crc. Switched it over with 15 left and turns out it finished 6-2. Fcukin anaheim b@stards...
I really hate the Ducks.
Time to resurrect this thread me thinks.
A bit up and down from NYR so far, beat the Leafs in a shoot-out after a 2-2 draw last night though:cool: - revenge for the 4-1 beating at home a couple of weeks ago!
Red Wings are cruising early again. Playing Chicago tonight, which is always a blood bath. Of course, there aren't many games that don't spill blood!
I don't know about that. Saw the Red Wings hammer the Kings when I was on holiday in LA and sadly there wasn't a hint of violence.
Not sure if this belongs or has already been posted in the YouTube video thread but this is certainly NHL related. A nice friendly pre-season affair  :

(there are a few slow-mos and loads of other videos of this incident on YouTube , certainly has a bitto shock value!)
Unfortunately Setanta Ireland seem to have pulled the plug on live NHL.
I guess it's not so bad seeing as the Leafs are frustrating this year (more so than usual)
Went to my first ever NHL game 2 weeks ago - Blackhawks at home to the Blue Jackets - really enjoyable - Chicago won 5-2.
3 headline obervations:
1. The stadium was half empty. Not sure if that is a Chicago thing or an early season thing or a non glamorous opposition thing but strange
2. Went to an NBA game the previous night and there is a completely different crowd for these 2 sports - 2 totally different strata of society
3. NHL does not translate to TV - on TV I cannot get excited about this but it is a totally different proposition live.
its up to NASN. They still show games so its probably just a timing thing
I went to see Blackhawks and Bulls last year. Both terrific nights out and agree with everythign you've said. Blackhawks crowds have been declining for years (as have NHL crowds with most US teams) and the game I was at had less than 10,000 people at it
Is NASN available standalone on any digital platforms?
