Peter Farrell played for Shamrock Rovers before going on to captain Everton for many years. He also played (and scored) in the famous victory over England at Goodison Park.
Also, while I understand that familiarity can breed contempt, it would be churlish for no-one to mention Johnny Giles in a thread like this.
so to be considered a big name all you have to do is have played here and then at some point played in the UK?
David Fairclough, the ginger "Super Sub" that scored a lot of important late goals for Liverpool in their European Cup wins, most famously against Saint Etienne in 1977 and Mike Channon, the ex-Southampton legend and now successul horsey man both played for the Harps in the 80s.
They were both pure and utter cack.
Brendan Bradley, the king of League of Ireland football also had a spell with us :D
Anyone remember the talk about Dundalk signing ex-Rangers keeper Andy Goram a few seasons back? What a wind-up that had to be!
Peter McParland (5 goals in the 1958 World Cup finals!) Dundalk.
Jackie Carey (Rovers) captained ManU in 40s/50s including 1948 FA Cup win.
Steve Staunton was with Dundalk but never played for the first team.
Mick Martin played for Bohs
Alan Kelly, Drums
Ray Treacy ,Rovers
Little known fact... Oliver St John Gogarty played for Bohs!
[QUOTE=dmandmythdledge]First of all CTID I don't even know what you said means. The point I was trying to make was that the Eircom League has plenty of good players that can make a success of themselves in England, or other leagues. I noticed Efan Ekoku's name was mentioned. I don't see how he could be considered a better player than Jason Byrne, Kevin Doyle, even Eamon Zayed maybe. Hopefully in 15/20 years time, we will be mentioning names such as O'Callaghan, Doyle, Byrne, Hoolahan etc as been the best players to have played in the league!
Yes youare correct in saying that the EL has got some great players but
Efan Ekoku is far was a far superior player than Eamon Zayed and Jason Byrne will ever be, with the exception of Doyle the others you have mentioned will never be good enough to play in any top divisions , consider international caps plus 8-10 years of premiership experience, then consider Zayed at Bray, and Byrne at Shelbourne- need i say anymore,
Paddy Mulligan (won a ECWC cup medal with Chelsea in 1971) for Rovers,
Pat Dunne (Won a league medal with Manchester United in 1965) for Rovers,
Liam Touhy
and perhaps the greatest
FRANK O NEILL
KOH
JUZ
Barry Bridges (ex Chelsea and Millwall) played for Pats
Dunphy played for Rovers
2 rugby internationals played for Shels in the 70s, Barry mcGann and Paul McNaughton
Mate of mine's father used to manage Shels and he signed Jimmy Johnstone, who lodged with him. Unfortunately every time Jimmy's wife rang from Scotland looking for her man, he was off down in Leeson Street and she eventually ordered him home to Glasgow.
No apparently he has never even been to Ireland... the footballer that is.Quote:

Llewlin Reilly plated for Galway United. Who? He was the top scorer for the Barbados international team and Don O'Riordan brought him to Galway, got him signed up and set him in with an apartment. He played half a game in Turner's Cross against Cork City in the p***ing rain and got kicked around the place by City....and fled back to Barbados the following day.
Michael Donnelan (top GAA player, allegedly) played for Galway United. An extra 2000 people turned up for his debut which brought the crowd up to 2100
what about the current Harps player who has a world cup winners medal to his name ?
