In a way that's fair enough, he expects a 'modern day' professional to do the basics right. He gets annoyed when things are not done right. "We are told that Lampard and Gerrard are the best midfield players in the world. Neither of them have strung two passes together all night so how can we tell?"
Giles's game was about a lot more than basics, with his finely tuned craft he would thrive at the highest level in todays game played on todays pitches.
