Assist and a clean sheet in a 3-0 win. Hopefully a turning point for Lyon and not a one off.
Was actually involved in the build up to all of Lyon's goals, albeit one intervention was a a rebound off his backside! I think we have found our Shane Duffy replacement and can't wait until we are sending in corners towards him, Collins and Ferguson
One for Big Sam maybe !
Maybe an appropriate likeness as his on-the-ball defensive work is a bit Duffy-esque too, going on that ball control in his last game that cost a goal. He may have a bit of work to do before he's a proper option I think, especially given it's the only position we have real options in.
Still, to go from a sub in Ballybofey to setting up Lacazette in three years is some going!
That was awful, but in the three games I've watched him in, it seems to have been an anomaly, as he generally looks comfortable receiving the ball and passing it around, something you couldn't say about Duffy sometimes. And it's all the more impressive, given that he's 6'6".Quote:

In terms of new caps, I think he should be one of the priorities for the new manager.
Also, does anyone know if Cork City get anything from future sell-ons for him, as Everton seem to be showing an interest - The Examiner reported that they got six figures for the Lyon move:https://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/...-41205799.html
I'm not sure on if the solidarity payments stop after he turns 23, wording is difficult to interpret. That would mean unless he moves during January, they'll get nothing. You get solidarity payments for every year he trained at the club up until the season of his 23rd birthday (this year in Jake's case)
5% of the fee divided between whatever clubs he was at in the below ratio.
• Season of 12th birthday: 5%
• Season of 13th birthday: 5%
• Season of 14th birthday: 5%
• Season of 15th birthday: 5%
• Season of 16th birthday: 10%
• Season of 17th birthday: 10%
• Season of 18th birthday: 10%
• Season of 19th birthday: 10%
• Season of 20th birthday: 10%
• Season of 21st birthday: 10%
• Season of 22nd birthday: 10%
• Season of 23rd birthday: 10%
Not sure if this stops at 23!
Highlights of Lyon's game at the weekend, O'Brien's assist is right at the beginning
I'm being a bit facetious with the Duffy comparison (attacking threat from the air/donkey elements to his defending), sure
Is he a real option though? Lyon are bottom of the table conceding two goals a game. His ratings aren't great (usual caveat there). The French league is probably the weakest of the top five. It's not a great look overall.
He's one to keep an eye on for sure, but I'd rather the talk about a defender was about his (good) defending. I think it needs to be in a position we have options in.
He's certainly in the conversation. If you assume we're playing 3 at the back, and we then have 6 centre-halves, it's been (oldest to youngest):
1. Duffy
2. Egan
3. Scales
4. O'Shea
5. Collins
6. Omobamidele
After that, you've got this group, depending on your preferences, injuries and form:
1. Mark McGuinness
2. Luke McNally
3. Darragh Lenihan
4. Jake O'Brien
5. Jimmy Dunne
6. Sean McLoughlin
7. Jack Clarke-Salter
8. Eiran Cashin
You'd imagine that Anselmo and Bosun won't be too far away from joining the conversation
I'd have McGuinness & O'Brien in the next squad quicker than Omobamidele. Duffy should be phased out and I've a bad feeling about Egan coming back from this latest injury, he certainly won't be around for the first NLgames.
Those seem two fairly reasonable comments I think.
Joining Stoke has really dealt McNally's chances of cap in the near future a blow. His form after joining Coventry had him up there as the best performing CB in the league. So much so that only 2 of their 12 losses came after he joined. Thought he was unlucky not to get a call up in June.
Imo I'd have Anselmo ahead of Dunne, McLoughlin, Salter, and Cashin. Especially if we're playing with three CBs and he's been playing LB all season in the Eredivisie. Which is a problem position for us. So think his versatility and playing regularly should put him on that list already.
Hopefully Cashin doesn't have a clause in his contract which allows Derby to extend it a further year. Make things easier for him leaving this summer. Will be interesting to see if Brighton come back for him in January to get a deal done quick or wait till the summer.
What is it about Cashin? I've probably watched him 4-5 times. I just don't see it.
We're a country of relatively tall people, with a football coaching setup that doesn't really adhere to the standard pass and move academy approach you find copied and pasted almost everywhere else in Europe now. Additionally a lot of our players play a mix of sports growing up, and the other ones they play tend to favour physicality over technical ability.
Basically everything about us as a nation of people - our size, our coaching and our mix of international and indigenous sports - contributes to us producing centre backs above any other position. It's not a coincidence that, in a period where there is a worldwide excess of technical midfielders, wingers and full backs, we're an outlier that is consistently producing goalkeepers, centre backs and strikers.
That's probably part of the issue though. The big lads don't tend to get played in midfield,.from a young age they get put at the back or up front.
Oh, I thought you were saying that you watched him 4/5 times and you just didn't see it? As in didn't see his ability.
He's a young CB who does the basics right, is good in the air despite not being the tallest and can make good runs forward on the left. I think he would benefit and would stand out more in a better league/more technical team. Hopefully gets a move away from Derby.
That's 2 wins and two clean sheets in a row after an away win in Monaco. Definitely their best win of the season.
Relegation looks like way less of a threat now with 6 points between all those in the bottom half of the table. If he's still playing week in week out I reckon he has to be in the next squad instead of the likes of Duffy (looks like he carries a similar goal threat).
Any team with Duffy in it only gives me nightmares to be honest. Unless we're going back to playing a really deep defensive line, which I doubt we will be.
Between Collins, O'Shea, O'Brien, Scales, McGuinness and Omobamidele once he starts getting his game we surely won't need Duffy by next autumn? Egan could do with showing some better form when he comes back from injury or there might be question marks over his starting place also.
I'm not that hopefull for Egan to be honest. Him and Duffy are the same age and Egan isn't even expected to be back to full fitness until late next year after his latest injury and surgery, according to Sheff Utd. Obviously, if he gets back to full fitness and his previous form, he'll be good to have in the squad but I think we should be focusing on the lads you mentioned above.
Some nice passing from O'Brien.

Interesting stat highlighted by OLs tv channel about O'Brien only giving away one foul in the last five games. Impressive stat given his size. While you might expect a big lad to win his duels it can be easy at times for opposition players to buy a foul against big lads like O'Brien.

Jake O'Brien, a crazy figure even surprises OL
Arriving as a complete unknown, coming from Crystal Palace, where he never played, Jake O'Brien is becoming indispensable to Olympique Lyonnais with very flattering statistics over the last 5 matches.
Thanks to a 3-0 victory against Toulouse, Lyon got some fresh air. If the Rhone club is still last in Ligue 1, it is only three lengths behind Téfécé, 15th. During this match, Alexandre Lacazette scored a hat-trick, full of opportunism. On his first goal, the attacker was served by Jake O'Brien. The Irish defender continues his good streak, having already scored 3 goals since the start of the season. In addition to his important offensive contribution to theOL, the former Cork City player is also predominant in defense. Although he cost a goal during the match against RC Lens (3-2 defeat of Les Gones), the 21-year-old stands out for his ability to be impeccable.
On the set of the OLNS show, on OL Play, Gaël Berger throws out a double-verified figure, showing that Jake O'Brien only made one mistake during of his last 5 matches, against precisely 5 caused faults. For comparison, over the same period, Sinaly Diomandé, Dejan Lovren, Henrique and Nicolas Tagliafico committed 7 fouls and 8 for Clinton Mata as well as Saël Kumbedi. Jake O'Brien is therefore the most reliable defender of this Lyon team, despite his lack of experience at the highest level. The 22-year-old gives 100% and deserves his starting place, as the editor-in-chief of OL Média explains. “He only made one mistake. It seems incredible because he's big, he plays a lot with his arms. He is 1m97 tall. This is a huge asset on set pieces. It is astonishing, especially in terms of its running quality. For the moment, we haven't seen him get ahead of himself” explains Gaël Berger, seduced by the surprise recruitment of Jake O'Brien.
From that highlights video, he looked fairly comfortable playing in the wide areas, which not all CBs do. I wonder, given his apparent pace, does he have it in him to be a full-back too, similar to how Dan Burn evolved for Brighton and Newcastle.
Another win and clean sheet sees Lyon out of the relegation zone.
And with ten men for the last few minutes too
Fair dues to him. He's certainly putting his case across
that's some highlight reel above. looks very tidy. Shane Duffy with an eye for a pass? I'd take that.
Naff music though.
One of two Lyon players given straight red cards in a 3-1 defeat against Le Havre today. Looking at a couple of matches out now; pity in terms of the momentum he had been building up
Rumour of course, but lines up with some separate rumours I was hearing late last year about Everton scouting O’Brien and well keen.

Have Everton even got money to spend this window given all their issues.
