I dont support any particular LOI teams but I do go to my nearest stadium Dalymount park every other Friday night so I do "get it" and enjoy it.. But first and foremost I am proud to be Irish and I would rather the world take note of our small powerful country, rather than a thousand people in Ireland..

Just because you dont 'like' partys and events doesn't give YOU the right to p!ss all something that MILLIONS of your countrymen and women in every corner of the globe are passionate about.

Wherever your from i do hope you and your friends enjoy Cork winning something, you'll still have to go to work and explain to your boss that the reason you have a hangover is because cork won the cup and no they're a soccer team boss not GAA... If Ireland won the world cup your boss wouldnt even be in work! (no dis respect to what u believe in and are passionate about, i just support Ireland #1)

Well when im there i sit in the home section and would rather see them win but since i was young i supported a few different loi teams as my uncle managed a few and he gave us tickets, not telling who he is though, ha ha...

Club - everytime, Derry City winning the Premier Division Championship before Ireland winning the World Cup. As someone said there is a slight EL/Premiersh!t split appearing here. Would it be fair to say thats because the majority Premiersh!t fans in this country have absolutely no connection whatsoever with the teams they support in England?...therefore making it easier to choose country over club?

That's the thing you see, I didn't. I said I didn't see the club -v- country as competing for my attention, but if pushed to choose it would be club. You're the one who decided to tear down one option just to push your preference, that's what i objected to, and it's all the sadder that someone who regularly attends EL games is so ready to abuse it. :rolleyes:

But you can do this when supporting an EL club away in Europe too!

Shels represent Ireland to me but are even closer to home. It's just like if five boxers represent Ireland in the Olympics I'd support all five, but if one was from Dublin, then I'd support him a little bit more than the other four.

Thats an excellent explanation, I think for the most part those that support a British club team tend to put Ireland first and those that support an Irish club team put their club first, because the club represent their community within Ireland.

the problem is that the club's no longer represent the community, just the fans do. i've only seen one drogs match this season and would barely recodnise half our current squad. with none of the players being from the town, its difficult to say they represent the community.

the irish players, in the main are irish, even those who people complain about (holland, morrison etc.) have ties to ireland.

Am I ? Or am I the only one seeing the truth ?! I think this is a matter of opinion (= accepting an FA team as representators of a whole nation or not) in which there's no ultimate right or wrong.

Club - first, last and always. My sense of belonging and community comes from Rovers not from thousands of goons in leprachaun hats. I actively don't support Ireland, if that makes any sense. In other words I usually hope they lose and I won't be travelling to Germany next year if "we" qualify.

Mattitude - Try celebrating an away win in Europe with 200 people that you travel the length and breath of Ireland with every season. Guaranteed more satisfying than watching Ireland win home or away. And yes, I have travelled away with Ireland and I'm still cringing from the experience.

Yeah but the fans are what makes any club. Nothing got to do with the player involved as they'll come and go but the fans will always be there. I'd swap pats winning the FAI cup once for Ireland never winning another game

See people, i'm not the only one supporting for another country ! It's completely normal that sometimes your heart tells otherwise than a single word on your ID.

Where does he say he supports another country?I think the national pride that irish people have is unique and is impossible to explain.If you gerrit as a belgian dont feel this pride then you'll have to just accept that it cannot be explained.This pride is not only shown through sport but any time a group of irish people go abroad,which can be very annoying at times when the "we're irish everybody loves us,lets let everyone know we're irish" attitude kicks in.

It's not quite unique, Scotland have it too. I think it might have something to do with not having succumbed completely despite being dominated militarily, and culturally for centuries by an alien culture.

Wales have it as well though seems the football culture is not too well introduced...


In Belgium I'd say there's more a 'Flemish identity' and 'Walloon identity', unless when a person or institute with the banner Belgium suddenly does well, then some suddenly feel Belgian...


I'd say national pride is a typical island thing. My friend from New Zealand has it as well, very proud of being a kiwi ([SIZE=1]and a damn tasty one[/SIZE]) :eek:
