Both defenses were dodgy. I'd put that down to it being the first game and new players getting to know each other though. I thought the football ye played was very good, even before the sending off, but ye were caught badly on the break. Your midfield will play through a lot of teams.
Anyone see prices for the '19 First Division anywhere yet?
Was looking on PP last week and couldn't find a book for the Premier or the First up yet
EDIT:
And course soon as I say that and check they're up!

Shels 8/15 already!
Pats look the best value for money bet there. Lack of goals cost them last season and their signings may have addressed that, not saying they will win it but look decent odds. In the first Division its anyone bar Shels (given those odds), Bray look solid enough so might be worth a punt, if anyone is going to beat the Tolka galacticos. :D
Bizarre odds for the two promoted teams. Not going to win the league obviously, but shouldn't be as far adrift as those odds suggest
No odds for Limerick? PP thinking they won't get a licence?
Aye, they've only outrights up at the moment, nothing else up like top scorer etc yet either as far as I can find. It should be decent e/w odds for the chasing packs in the premier and the first for a bet on who'll finish top 3, Pats or Sligo with Bucko as dark horses looks a decent e/w bet in the premier. No value at all really on the singles outside of that end of things yet.
Obviously PP got the same legal notice Foot did.
Its hard to see any real value for the league title betting at this stage.
While lots of things could change before the league kicks off Cork City currently look weaker than last season when the squad needs to be stronger than what came in 10 points shy last season.
Shamrock Rovers have definitely made some significant signings, but it remains to be seen if the midfield will be imbalanced. A striker is critical to their chances while there may also be defensive frailties despite a good record in the latter part of the season.
Dundalk are settled in terms of the core of the squad, but still need to add some quality additions to improve on last season. I doubt the absence of Stephen Kenny will have a significant impact in the short term.
Its hard to see any other teams mounting a serious and sustained challenge although the progress of St Pats Waterford and Silgo will be interesting to watch.
There might be some action in the handicap betting odds
I think Longford @ 16/1 is the best value between both of the divisions
Pats @ 25/1 not the worst outside bet to throw a spare couple of euro on
The absence of a credible manager could destabilise dundalk, but there quality on the pitch should see them through. If they lose Shields for a period of time that could have an effect also.
I don't see Rovers finishing any higher in the table with no credible goal getting striker. If that changes I'll head to the bookies. Cork should split the 2 I'd say.
I think Cobh will be ahead of us in the table considering the big signings they have made so I am surprised we are ahead of them in the betting stakes! we havent even a sub GK yet which worries me.
If the Dundalk management are able to keep the continuity they'll run away with it for me,Rovers a distant second,so many changes for everyone else very hard to predict how they'll fare.
What a strange ostrich-like view of the point I was trying to make. Do dalk simply refuse to countenance the fact that as you've lost your most successful manager and now have a rookie and an old timer (who's there in name only) in charge the absence of Kenny "could" have a negative effect on success for next season...?
Most (probably all) Dundalk fans would have preferred that SK stayed at the club. Any change in manager involves a risk, especially coming of the back of the level of success he has achieved. But it was not a one man job and the continuity in the management, coaching and players significantly mitigates the risks.
It will take more than hoping for a fall off from Dundalk for any other club to have a serious tilt at the title and even if you are irked by that opinion, I think it an objective view.
Is the opposite of "credible management" incredible management?
The bookies make us odds on favs to retain(10/11 with Boylesports btw) nobody else.
Assessing the risk.
Manager - was assistant to a very Successful manager for the 6 years
Co-manager - ditto
3ic - there for the badges.
Players - basically the same squad that ran away with the league last year.
Have other squads strengthened? 2nd haven't,3rd have a wee bit but not by 25 points.
calculating ...............
Well just run through the list of successful assistants under fergie that have on to be successful managers.
...
Being an assistant in a successful team != becoming a successful manager.
Continuity is really the only thing he has going for him.
I don’t think those odds are anything less than expected. Dundalk may only have got two new players in, but with Murray and Connolly leaving and O’Donnell retiring I think Perth will look to recruit at least 2 more.
Cork have weakened and will operate from a reduced budget, but still have nucleus of a decent enough team, Rovers have added some decent players but still without a decent front man.
That’s easily your top 3 with Waterford looking to maintain mantain a top 4 and possibly challenged by Pats if they gel quickly.
Dundalk will be favs with most and I think that’s a fair reflection on the squad as it is now, I think we win win the league, but I do think it could be a lot tighter this year.
I take the point above though, and it has been spoken locally, how it’s rare that assistants anywhere really, do well, there are exceptions of course. I think the settled squad and better quality than the rest will be the difference, but VP and his team have a challenging year ahead of them, no mistake about that.
On the face of it the way Dundalk have sorted their management team for this season its hard to argue that it will greatly upset the whole vibe in the club.I think if Dundalk start well its their title again but if they start poorly then it will have the potential to create doubt and give belief to Cork Pats Rovers.
A good start is always important for confidence and VP has got a fairly benign February start
Maybe you should mark Friday 1 March in your diary as the 4th series in the league will see Dundalk travel to Tallaght
At that stage the opening fixture will have been
Dundalk
Sligo Rovers (h)
Finn Harps (a)
UCD (h)
Shamrocks
Waterford (a)
Derry City (h)
Bohs (a)
I'll have a banner with me at that match in case it's needed:
"It's not working out, Enough is Enough"
Worth considering the back up Dundalk have if this happens, Peak 6 have really only made funds available for one transfer so far, McEleney last summer, and I say if things are not going to plan they wont be slow to add more players in the summer.
That 1st March date should be a cracker in Tallaght between Rovers and Dundalk, this is the 4th game of the season, so good test for both sides. Cork visiting Oriel Park end of March will be another in a month of big games.
Rovers fans lecturing on managers 😂
The point made was just that he was an assistant to a successful manager, the being at the same club wasn't mentioned. Familiarity with players isn't such a big factor to drastically change the results anyway, some people make great assistants but poor managers, Croly being a good LOI example, great assistant, poor manager, they're two very different jobs.
Up there with dundalk fans moaning about toilets in away ends.
So Dundalk fans remain steadfast in their demand for 10 points from the opening 3 games. If they don't they'll direct their ire at either Vinny Perth or the FAI. Either way, the petrol can has been ordered.
Time for a new thread?
Pat's into 9/1 for the prem division.
dundalk 4/5
shams 3/1
cork 9/2
pats 9/1
25's and better the rest.

Very generous odds for Limerick to win the FD at 16/1, joint fourth with Longford. Someone at PP isn't paying attention.
