I think Forde should move over a bit to his left between the two centre backs or he will leave an open goal for the Spanish.
Glen Fitzpatrick. Ireland u-17 level years ago; a game played in South Africa for some reason.
He didn't score.
What the hell is his obsession with picking less than average strikers as wingers especially when he has McClean on the bench. There is zero logical reason for it, we have seen over and over again that Keogh is not capable of operating as a winger and yet he persists in picking him there. If we are short on numbers he should call up someone like Grealish from Villa or someone from the under 21s who actually plays in that postion and might learn something by just being in the squad. It would be too much for them to start against Spain but there would at least be a long term benefit.
Its so frustrating to see a Premiership winger being left on the bench while a striker of League One standard starts out of position.
Well I am just stunned.
I'm puzzled by his lack of faith in McClean. Granted, he's had a poor season but I don't think his defence and work rate have ever been in question, just his intelligence and ability to keep defenders guessing. Perhaps it is part of a long-game to get McClean to cop himself on and realise he only has limited time as a professional and needs to maximise it.
I have a crazy feeling that Sammon will open his international account tomorrow.
He has much more ability to keep defenders guessing than Keogh. Completely baffles me.
Well they play different roles. While I thought Keogh was poor in his 45 minutes against Georgia, you could see the tactical reason he was in the team, to get into the box and help Long whenever McGeady got in a good position, which I think was necessary with Keane absent. He doesn't offer anything as a winger and can't cross the ball, but he's quick, disciplined and hard-working. I'd still play McClean every time, but what I wish is that McClean could combine his touchline-hugging role with an instinct to get in the box and score goals. He's scored a few headers for Sunderland so it's hardly like he lacks the ability.
I hope he plays the 3 who haven't gotten in yet, as was pointed out earlier.
I subscribe to premier sports for the GAA so will be able to watch this! Thanks to DeLorean for pointing this out!!
Not sure if I should stay up...I think I'll record it & then avoid the result till I get back from work.
You're welcome. I just happened to spot it here.
Usually anything that says freeview on Setanta is available without subscription. It's astonishing that this is freeview though as it's one of the few decent events they have. I feel a bit robbed as a €5 per month subscriber :)
I don't see anything about it being freeview on their TV listings
Del Bosque has said that Valdes will start in goal and David Villa will start up front.
I think Sammon and Keane could be a good partnership.
Sammon has set Keano up twice for goals in last two games so there seems to be some sort of understanding between them.
Can't see them seeing too much of the ball tonight though
Somewhere between 4-0 and 8-0 - unless Spain are too knackered from too many games/travel/partying.
Hot tip for Tricky,
58c on Spain @2/1 with a 2 goal handicap.
CD you have also been saying Keogh for the last few years is going to score in a big game.2/11 (2/10 really)heightens your chances anyway...
Seriously our defence is as weak as the Germany game. We could get destroyed again. He obviously knows that we don't have much attacking threat down the wings and is looking for Coleman to be the out ball and provide crosses for Sammon. Interesting choice that one.
Think we are in for a hiding to be honest if Spain try to play at all.
I'd feel more comfortable with Delaney at CB over O'Dea and I just don't get playing a forward (Andy Keogh) at outside-left. Outside-right is bad enough. McClean or Stephen Quinn would be more obvious choices for that role. The team loses balance as a consequence.
Will settle for not getting humped.
A goal or a 0-0 would be a miracle. Albeit pretty pointless.
Espana with a minimum of 3-1. As luckily they should be more bothered about the C.C.?
Keogh already scored in a big game, against Germany, but it wasn't a big goal.
I think O'Dea has done okay-ish for us for the most part but would definitely have preferred to have Delaney there, or even Richard Keogh. Protection from midfield is minimal as well, really think he should have used Meyler alongside McCarthy with Hendrick more advanced. Andy Keogh's selection is daft.
They're running scared lads, 12 men in the Spanish starting line-up...

What is a "big goal"? Its only a big-game. And that was not a big game because we were trounced.
It could however, be a de facto big-game, an important goal, if we somehow end up level on points with austria and they suffer a big loss along the way....
Ya, CD is still winning on this one either way.
It was still a big game. Losing heavily doesn't reduce the significance of the game, but it does reduce the significance of the goal.
Big makes it sound like some form of long distance shot or something of seismic proportions. I would say an important goal in a big game. I wouldn't say its a big goal in a big game.
Anyway keoghs wasn't an important goal or a "big goal", unless of course somehow it works out that it gets us through on goal difference!
What is the CD criteria though?
If it's...
Keogh will score in a big game.... then he already has.
If it's...
Keogh will score a big goal in a big game... then he hasn't.
:)
Important goal in a big game.
That's why I said he is still winning. So long as he keeps playing and is still around, then his chances of doing it must appear greater the longer it goes on....you could hedge it now CD and take your money.
The late equaliser against Serbia was big enough in it's own way. I remember being very happy that we didn't lose that game being Trap's first. I know it doesn't count though.
That wasn't Keogh, that was the Milky Bar Kid.
Just realised the game is on at 1am ie in about 5 and half hours time I though it was 'tomorrow'
might have missed it otherwise!!
The thread title wasn't bull****ting.
Yes maybe I shoudl get in the habit of actually reading thread titles!!
Still 1-0 Sweden in the Faroes match could do with the Faroes fluking a goal right now!
The longer it stays 1-0 the more nervous Sweden may get, they may start to fall back and settle for 1-0.
Great save by the Faroes keeper, he is a class keeper!! Still 1-0 on 75 minutes.
Bad decision for Faroes. man made run and was clear away and wrongly flagged offside.
