Don't know, wasn't invited. It was for a select few. All hush hush at the moment
Inviting the GUST to join in the League of Ireland team? A nice compromise for both parties.
It seems like so many clubs are posting major financial problems this week (Waterford, Bray, Longford, Cobh have their debts too), the FAI needs every application it can get.
GUST supposedly submitted an expression of interest months back when the FAI requested them. But the licensing committee turned them down, saying that it would be inappropriate to accept because talks over the future of Galway football were ongoing.
I would be livid if I was a Galway United fan. They've got one of the best grounds in the country going unused, a relatively large support base and yet even with a 7/8 team first division they're not being allowed in. If 3 teams in Galway was such an unfeasible concept, why the hell were Mervue and Salthill allowed in by the FAI mongs first day?
I personally don't think it matters a damn whether Salthill and Mervue are there, they don't take from Galway's crowds, they're just amateur junior clubs with no fans. Their existence in the league is a separate issue. Galway United should be allowed back in.
Longford won't/don't have major financial difficulties. Flancare have pulled out but I'd be pretty sure their money will be replaced, from existing contributors most likely. €20k or so will be found if needs be. The chairman has put a lot more than that in over the years and he's as involved as ever.
there are 5 people who dont want Gufc back and 3 of them are from Galway and one is an ex gufc player and the other is the Don.
there are 5 people who dont want Gufc back and 3 of them are from Galway and one is an ex gufc player and the other is the Don.Salthill are allegedly changing there name again in honour of their leader!!!!
Cobh will rise from the ashes and go unbeaten all season using a delicate mix of U19s and Cork City cast-offs. With 10 mins to go in the final game at home to Harps (with Ramblers 7-0 up thanks to a Davin O'Neill double hat-trick), the euros in the meter run out, the floodlights go off and the club is liquidated again. Turns out it was all being financed on a dodgy MBNA card. Harps awarded the title.
From the Great Island Almanac 2013 :p
I'll take that.
When will the first divison start does anybody know ?
You'd have to imagine on the same weekend as the Premier. If not, the weekend after.
The First Division has moved back to winter football so it'll kick off in August.
First Division??? Whats that? Is there even such a thing???
Better question would be when are license's are given out?
The FAI are still trying to figure out whether they can fudge Waterford's application or will need to have Henderson knocked off instead. Then they'll move onto deciding how much subsidy Cobh will need to survive the season.
Give them time.
As Henderson is classed as a football creditor it should be a licence issue? I think the rule is you have to have paid any outstanding footballing debts or have a signed agreement with the person to pay it off over time.
If Waterford don't have an agreement with their former manager who they owe money why should they get a licence when Cobh could fail to get a licence because they owe former players money?
Because there isn't enough teams to be turning anyone away ;P

Harps in training at the indoor 3g complex in Letterkenny. Strength and conditioning. Players will be like machines come the start of the season.
This is slightly off topic but just to save me trawling another thread, what's the latest with Harps' new ground? Is it still being constructed?
I often ask myself the same question Adam.
Last I heard was the EGM just before Christmas, where they said that foundations for the second stand are to be done in the new year with steel structures to follow soon after, as soon as the new draw-down of grant money comes through.
After that, your guess is as good as mine.

Mervue Utd have announced a couple of pre-season warm up games ahead of the new Airtricity First Division campaign which will begin on the 1st March.

It more than likely a mistake and it will start on the 8th but its LOI so god only know if its a mistake or not
When are we gonna find out what is happening with the coming season? Whats the holdup?
I guess they're waiting for licensing to be completed.
Last year the fixtures were announced on January 26th, and licenses were announced on 15th February
Its a bit trickier this year as there's currently only 7 confirmed teams. I guess it'd be obvious enough that who's ever idle would play Cobh but still awkward
Is there any chance that 3 new teams be allowed into the 1st Div this year ? If not, it looks like it will be a one divison league next year with 18 teams, a spilt after one round of matches between a top and bottom half. It will mean 31 league games for all teams, easier to fit in than the current 33 game season.
That won't happen.
As far as I know only Cobh's application has been treated seriously. I'm not even sure that, aside from the mess with GUST, anyone else even applied.
