Oscar Traynor Trophy 2011/12

A very solid display by limerick.thought shane waters had a great game.mullins and chucka very strong in central defence. A very fast limerick side going forward with doyle,tierney and waters on the break.thought the 2 lads in centre mid for clare (eade and darcy,ex pike and shannon town) did well for 50mins but went out of game after that.don't think clare were that bad,they had afew decents chances.limerick in fairness though were strong and will take beating in the competition.can see them getting bags of goals

limerick sound very strong, some high profile names in the squad. are paddy power doing odds for the oscar traynor??

Totally agree with that. Shane Waters was very good. Clare had a few chances but Limerick dominated most of the play. The referee was average. Made a couple of strange decisions. Overall a decent game. Limerick look very strong...

good result for limerick,looks a strong team all round,neville made a good save at 1-0 but cant remember him having that much to do after that.waters was superb,thought he should have had a pen in the 2nd half.well worth the fiver in and a decent crowd there too.

is it just me or is this thread been avoided by certain posters in the last 24 hours,silence is golden,i suppose they will be back if galway get a result against limerick,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Clare were awarded the game 3 nil after Galway refused to travel to an alternative pitch 20mins away when the original pitch was deemed unplayable.

poor result for the limerick youths the weekend lost 2-1 to desmond league,was not a great performance tbh.better result for the juniors who won 5-2 in galway ,anyone got the scorers?

In fairness its the oscar traynor. As far as i can see not many teams take it very serious. A change in format might help.

Roscommon do advanced as they have exact same goal difference ..... and goal scored so it goes down to head to head...... Roscommon won that 2-0

Referee was a disgrace in that game, 3 players sent off for Sligo Leitrim and one after full time.

The Sligo Leitrim and District League representative team journeyed to Milebush Castlebar to challenge the Mayo League in this second round clash of the Umbro Oscar Traynor competition. Mayo broke the deadlock after ten minutes when Brendan Lavelle got the rub of the green when no offside was given and he rounded Tony Clarke in the Sligo goals to tap home the opener. Mayo were now on top and Sligo Captain Gary Rooney had his hands full in midfield with a battle royal between him and Gerard O Boyle with the latter going close on twenty one minutes with a blistering shot just going marginally wide of the Clarke’s goal. Referee Damien MC Grath seemed a little under pressure and he allowed some rough challenges from both sides to go unpunished in particular some very hard tackles by Declan Flynn at centre back for Mayo and yet in was Gareth Kelly of Sligo Leitrim who got the first yellow on twenty seven minutes when protesting about another heavy tackle on him. Mayo were now employing dropping the ball over the back line of defenders and allowing the fleet of foot Brendan Lavelle the opportunity to run into the space and a job he exploited very well especially with little chance of being caught offside. Clive Sommers and John Gaffney were on overtime in the heart of the visitors defence with Mayo piling on the pressure then the second yellow card went against Sligo Leitrim again when Colin Jinks tackled Danny Scahill in what was no better or worse than previous tackles. The resulting free kick saw Gerard O Boyle coming close yet again with his header coming back of the post. Gareth Kelly then worked a corner kick that resulted in three consecutive corners on the Mayo goal but they caused little trouble. On the stroke of half time Mayo skipper Declan Flynn eventually picked up a yellow card after a foul on Gary Rooney, then Keith Nibbs brought off a great save from Neil Mc Nicholas in the Mayo goals and Sligo had two more golden opportunities to level matters before the break but it was not to be.
The second got under way and once again it was that man Brendan Lavelle making Tony Clarke take of a superb save on forty nine minutes then one minute later Keith Nibbs broke the Mayo offside trap and racing through on goal he drew out keeper Mc Nicholas before passing to Gareth Kelly to slot home a glorious equaliser. Danny Scahill slotted home the resulting penalty but the game was effectively over with a needless red card then a blatant penalty was denied Sligo Leitrim on seventy minutes when Gareth Kelly was hacked down in the Mayo box in full view of the referee only to see play waved on. Twelve minutes from time Michael Duffy got Mayo’s third and three minutes into extra time keeper Tony Clarke with the ball in his possession was felled to the ground by Mayo substitute Brian Gallagher who then placed the loose ball into an empty net. The Sligo Leitrim players waited for a free kick but the goal was allowed stand. In the end the score line was academic but with six yellow cards and three red all dished out by Mr Mc Grath to the neutral observer by his lack of control was to a large extent the author of his own work that seen him more the focal point then the teams. This has to be the worst ref I have ever seen, I'm not talking about today's game alone. The game is always about him, running around like a new born lamb, flashing card's if you open your mouth but you can kick anyone you want to.
Having said that the Sligo lad's had to much to say!!

The game could have been over at half time if Mayo could score, they missed at least 4 good chances and the same in the second half.
They done the same v Ross and missed a peno.

Was not at the game but this referee has done the line in Champions league games,European qualifiers and league of Ireland.It seems from this report that 2 of the red-cards was for abusing or for saying something to the referee,this is something that is here in Mayo for a number of years,where questioning or abuse of a referee is at least yellow and somtimes red.

Anyone know where abouts the Inishown League play there Oscar Traynor matches? Do they use a Clubs ground or do they have their own.

i was at the game, s/l should have being down to 10 men after 8 mins for a hand ball. s/l were very poor and offered nothing to the game but lack of disapline both on the pitch and off the bench, having said that mayo did get the rub of the green on the day prob by keeping their mouths shut and getting on with it:ball:

What did he expect,you are not allowed to say anything to the referee,i would agree at times it has gone too far the other way here in Mayo,we had a case a no of years ago where one of ours players used lanuage against his own teamate and got red carded fot it and this was at junior level.

Ya that's all fair enough. It's not really the case in Sligo where you can get sent off that handy.
