LoI live on TV

RTE have the most resources in the country. When they show their CL games, they have highlights of all 4-8 games on their given CL night (and the night before), within an hour of the final whistle. Some highlights of games from Greece and Russia are longer than LOI game highlights. So the resources are there to put them on air, they're just not used.

RTE don't have 100% of the LOI tv market either. If they can't be bothered to provide the coverage quality the LOI licence-payer deserves, then other broadcasters should step in to fill the gap.

That's because they buy the highlights of the other games, which are relatively cheaply available because UEFA are selling them to every country in Europe (and many outside of Europe).

With the LoI, RTÉ have to do all the work themselves, which costs much more. It's simple economies of scale.

You're right on the LoI TV market though - RTÉ don't have a 100% share. Other broadcasters could step in and fill the gap. But they're not. What does that tell you?

Yea, Monday at 7PM is actually a great slot for MNS. Late night slots tend to miss the younger viewers so 7 PM is far better time slot. In terms of editing and putting together the show, Monday is probobly the earliest it could be done (all the non footie dross takes time), the limited camera footage also makes editing a bit more difficult. Most bogball games covered are at big reasonably well equiped stadia (Croker, Semple etc) which facilitate better coverage. Bogball games at smaller grounds tend to have similar crap filming we all know and love.
Nothing wrong with present time slot and until grounds/RTE improve filming facilities we are stuck with show fllers like "fan zone"

They show them because they're contracted to, despite the audience only interested in a handful of teams.

Here, there are fans of all the senior clubs, yet 12 of them are ignored every week, in favour of "Good, Bad, Ugly", "Sixty", International P/Reviews, and so forth. It's not a costs issue, RTE have the biggest media resources in the country, and are the state broadcaster. The money could be found and spent if there was the will to do so. But there isn't.

The BBC may show their league highlights at the time they do, but that's when their viewers want it shown*, and at least every game that day is covered, as it should be.

*When ITV moved it to an earlier slot, viewing figures slumped.

Who are you arguing with though? Nobody's suggesting the will is there to improve the coverage. The league have a decent slot on a Monday evening and that seems to suit just about everybody.

Anyone an idea of the viewing figures last season or this year. I know they weren't great at the start of the show but wondering if the move to 7pm & the fact MNS has been on a few years, might have helped boost viewership.

The Presenters are not even at the ground tonight.

Tony O'Donoghue is. Everytime Ireland play away Bill and the lads stay at home; Bill and the lads stayed at home for every CL game too. Con/Darragh and the other lads go to games when feasible. I presume he's doing Saturday Sport tomorrow so needs be in Dublin.

Staying in Dublin for Ireland away games is understandable, but not for games in Galway. Broadcasters that take the national league seriously, send all their crew to the stadium for live games, wherever they are.

Who gives toss aslong as the game is on tv?!?

There are various genuine complaints can be levelled at rte in mns and their live coverage of the league, but I don't believe any of your's can be taken at all seriously.

It's all very well saying they should be there, but at the majority of grounds in the country that means providing a mobile studio, in addition to all the other setup. And for what? Five minutes before the game, same again at half time and if you're lucky five afterwards!

How many live games do they show?
Have you watched the show? Notice anything happening when they get outside the championship/big games in league 1/2?

I'll explain the last one for you. The highlights get shorter, discussion and replays become less frequent. Is this because of a lack of interest, or time? Or because they're going from games covered, from multiple angles, by very high-end video equipment through ones covered by a couple of people with merely high-end tech to some bloke with a camcorder (and, at times it would seem, no tripod)?

Any of this sound vaguely familar?

Now I would like to see first division highlights as much as the next fan, but unless every game can be guarenteed to be covered to an agreed standard then it's a wastes of time. And yes some of the best video coverage is in the first division - would this still go on the web if it going to rte?

Also are you actually advocating the highlights be shown at 3-5am on a saturday morning?

I'd much rather we kept mns and had friday night sports back on the radio.

Am I putting two and two together and getting an odd number, or could there be a reason for that? Maybe they were getting in match practice, or something?

How do you mean?

RTE have some sort of complicated agreement with Setanta to gradually take over all the coverage of LOI, or maybe just most of it. I assume they agreed to let Setanta have the matches during the summer when there's no football from other countries to show.

Their live EPL Sunday coverage is anything from 3 hours-6.5 hours long, depending on how many games are on. RTE's is 2.

Last night was the first time I have seen any Irish broadcaster have their presenters sitting in HQ for a domestic game. In our first game in Tallaght, there were no studio facilities of any kind. However, they went out to present the game from the halfway line in the rain, so it's not the lack of a "mobile studio", that's stopping them going out there.

Sky show most of the live games in English football, with proper promotion and marketing beforehand, presentation and coverage on the night. There is a highlights show on their sports stations, with multiple repeats. Setanta are the closest to that level here. If you want to watch a repeat of RTE's coverage live or highlights though, then it has to be through a PC.

As for the BBC, their live game coverage is decent. Their highlights show may be only once a week, but it covers every single game from all 4 divisions. It doesn't matter that there's no tripod, what does matter is that the game is shown. Pre-1992, the BBC covered 2 games every week on it's MOTD show. Nowadays, every game is shown, with full commentary, and every lower league game is shown afterwards. On the same night. That is comprehensive coverage, and that's what we deserve in our own league. Anything less is frankly, second, third, and fourth-best.

You sill don't get the economics of it, do you?

Think we all want more LOI football on TV but comparing with EPL is stupid. better coverage (I think SKY use 15 cameras per game) of the most hyped league in the world ? How the hell can we compete ?
LOI must operate on a stand alone, complimentary basis to EPL - only time I make any headway with barstoolers is the "if you like football so much how come you dont go........".

He also has about 200 streams of live EPL football available, in case one of the stations happens to miss a game. He only has to wait a few hours max for highlights too. But he has LOI shown in his face, primarily whenever RTE feel like it. Faced with that choice, of course he'll choose free football over live football.

What RTE excel at is the CL and Internationals. Even in difficult economic times, the coverage of it is excellent. So they can do it for LOI, if only they bothered.

You have enlightened me, I genuinely didn't realise rte were sending ob crews all over europe each week to cover each and every cl match. And I take it's not really sky and the bbc doing the feeds for the premiership. :D

The world has changed and if this debate changes with it the League of Ireland could benefit enormously. People are still talking about what RTE can do for the LOI. LOI fans - including, or rather, especially, people like those running this website and extratime.ie - need to use the internet as the medium for the promotion of the league. The LOI needs more fans - that much is clear, so go after them. Everyone uses facebook and twitter, everyone uses Google. And these are the places where the league should be promoted.
For example, Foot.ie does not have a facebook page. It should have a facebook page. It's a small thing but it could make a big difference.
Individual LOI clubs should aggressively market the product using the viral marketing, investment in SEO.
Take how quickly the 'the fella in the green and white shirt' went around the country...the internet is the most potent medium out there.
RTE does not really care about the LOI: not only that, but if it is seen to support the LOI too much then the GAA heads will start complaining, so they're never going to push it very hard.
At any rate, the point is, the LOI is the best kept secret in this country; it's up to its supporters to spread the word. RTE usually make a bollock$ of it when they're offered something decent; they rejected Father Ted.

They were never offered Father Ted. Graham Linehan confirmed this several times. Outside of that grievous error I agree with your post.

Just want to mention Setanta's excellent live coverage of last night's game. They may not cover many games, but when they do, it's excellent work. Detailed analysis, lengthy interviews, extensive pre-game and post-game coverage. Shame the game was poor, but that's out of their hands.
