Superb, Dodge ! Sums us all up I reckon ! As a Bohs fan since 1981 obviously I've gone though the mill until the last 10 years, so I have a huge admiration for the die hards from our less successful clubs, and those like Athlone Town who saw great years in the '80's, but may never see again.
Dodge, you brought a tear to my eye. Replace Richmond with Gortakeegan and add in that we have no fans and no european adventures and you have taken it from my heart. Its the essence of why to a man and woman we will defend our league to non believers and why we bore everyone to death who doesnt understand. Thanks Dodge.

I think and breathe football. Try and get to as many games as I can in the LOi, all over the place. Love the pre match banter, love seeing the irish style grounds, and love thats its our league.
Its only a shame that my town (Mullingar) doesnt have senior foootball, or junior by the looks of it. I really envy all of ye guys that have clubs to support.
Aside from that I have coached adult and underage teams, but as I am not settled yeat (workwise) I am not doing anything like that at the moment - but hope to pick it up again in the future
Playing wise Im way gone, but who knows.....................might make a come back next year.....................;)

superb post dodge.. I was never blessed to communicate in words that best sum my feelings but i agree with every aspect of your post ... Its why I love the league and the people that support it and play it and why I have lifelong friendships with fans on this site ..

Many is the time i have spotted a fellow LOI fan on a non-match day wearing a scarf or badge, and I will start up a conversation. I saw a Rovers fan with a Hoops baseball cap in Hawaii when I was on honeymoon and we had a great chat. I purposely sat beside a Pat's fan on the Luas just because he had a Pat's scarf and we also had a great chat. More recently, I spotted 2 Dundalk fans having lunch in Galway on the day they were playing in Terryland and ditto.
I still don't know why I love football though.
Love football as it brings out so many emotions in you , From a fantastic victory to a heartbreaking loss. From the moment the final whistle blows in one game,you are looking forward to the next game already .For many supporting a football team is'nt just about going to the games, it's also a lifestyle .Through following Cork City i have been to loads of new places and met new people aswell.

I love sports because they bring out the best and worst in people and are the purest form of tribal gatherings and being part of a group that are left. I love football because it is a sport, because it is a way for a father to connect with his son and son with father. Football allows us to dream and have our dreams crushed or come true. Football and sport reveal our inner strengths and failings - a loss where we should have won gets far more discussion than one we romped home in. The width of a crossbar, a piledriver hitting it and the direction the ball takes, shows that the beauty of the act is more important than the ball bursting the net. I cannot separate football and sport, because both make us appreciate being able to wake up each morning, or wish we'd never been born. We're still all living in caves (evolution wise), sitting around a fire and sharing stories, all the technology and advances mean nothing, when I'm looking out at clear blues skies and feeling homesick after reading Dodge's post. Football has helped us all to connect on the same level. Even Nokia can't better that.

League of ireland is the best league in the world,no doubt ! Its great to see players flying into challenges and playing the game the way it should be instead of watching tossers like ronaldo and drogba throw themselves all over the place and having their little tantrums when there hair gets wet !
You know I never thought of the league as a real spectacle until I sat watching MNS with a German (and then discussing it with an Argentine) the thing they loved was how players got on with the game - and they enjoyed the speed, meaty challenges and lack of playacting. Good post Ciaran!Quote:

Being part of a sizeable crowd in the randysmell tonight with both sets of fans chanting abuse at each other for 90 minutes yet able to walk out side by side after the game without incident.
I like football and most sports for the sheer enjoyment it brings to my life. Whether its competing or spectating, there's nothing better than observing a magical bit of individual skill or a great team performance. There will be bad days, but the good days will always counteract the despair that a defeat can bring. An added bonus is the friendships you make through football and sport in general.
I love football because Sligo Rovers exists within its realm, thats it really.
Im a Rovers fan first and a football fan second.
Saying that I still get a nice warm feeling when I see another LOI fan sporting their colours where ever you go.
I feel a bond between LOI fans because lets face it we are under constant siege from the twin evils of Premiership football and the GAA.
I gain an instant respect for someone when I know they are a LOI fan, just like a lose respect for someone when I hear they are a Merchandise United fan or what not.
When I see LOI teams play in Europe whether they are Shams or Bohs or Cork ill still cheer them and hope to god they win even if I despise them when they are back on Irish soil.
The disspointment is continuous and unending, considering im a Sligo Rovers fan but the sense of communtiy around our club is immense.
There are few clubs with the community support and identity of a town that we do and im proud of that.
Eamon Sweeney best described it when he said a LOI fan was somewhat like a Presbyterian in the South, stuck between the giants of Premiership football and the GAA but all the more zealous and loyal because of our siege mentality.
Every LOI fan here knows the love and the pain, for those that arent LOI fans they will never understand until they experience it themselves.
Like Rasputin Im a Sligo Rovers fan first, then a football fan second.
Everyone I grew up with or am friendly with would be Rovers fans and even those who wouldnt go to every game always want them to do well.
Its a good comunity club with a long tradition, a club just by being here always punches above its weigth, due to Sligo being a small town hindered by geography and economics.
I adore football, it teachs responsability, teamwork, and working towards a goal.
Football can teach many life lessons.
